Barclays Summer Internship Programme is designed specifically for students who are interested in gaining real-world commercial experience while developing an understanding of what it is like to work at Barclays. Over the course of the programme, you will begin to understand the skills and capabilities you need to reach top positions within the group. Interns will also be paid a competitive salary during the length of their internship.
Interns are recruited on a first-come, first-served basis. It is wise to apply as soon as possible.
Summer internships in Retail and Business Banking and Corporate Banking begin in June and last for 8 weeks and include the completion of a specific project. Summer Internships in Wealth and Investment Management last for 10 week, and summer internships in investment banking last from 8 to 10 weeks.
Barclays Investment Bank also offers a number of off-cycle internships for those whose degree course requires them to get experience at either a different time of the year or for a longer period of time. These can last from 6 weeks to 6 months, and are open to students in their penultimate year or higher.
Note: Many of Barclays' graduate roles are filled through internships; roles in Investment Bank are almost exclusively filled by interns. Applicants who are serious about a career at Barclays are strongly advised to start by applying for an internship.
Retail and Business Banking, Wealth and Investment Management, and Investment Bank also offer 4-5 day long Spring Insight Programmes in April of each year. These intensive programmes give first year students the chance to see what life in the industry is like, through work shadowing, workshops, interactive skill sessions and many networking opportunities.
Students who successfully complete a Spring Programme in Barclays Investment Bank are automatically fast-tracked on to an Assessment Centre for a summer internship the following year.
Barclays have offices and branches all over the UK, and choice of location will be dependent upon the area applied for. However, most internships are based in Canary Wharf.
Internship Application Requirements
Barclays are looking for students on track for a 2.1, with "energy", "initiative" and "ideas". Summer internship programmes are open to students in their penultimate year of study, while Spring Insight programmes are open to first-year students, or students who are in year two of a four-year programme.
The selection process for summer and off-cycle internships will generally be the same as that of the related graduate role. See Barclays Application Process for more details.
Throughout the summer internship, Barclays run regular events that give interns an insight into how a global organisation works, and begins the programme with an induction and training. Wealth and Investment Management interns will shadow a Private Banker, and all interns will be assigned a 'Buddy' – a recent graduate - who will act as a guide during each interns time at the company, as well as a senior mentor.
