In the UK and Ireland, the CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test) is a popular cognitive ability test for students aged 6-17.
Although not all schools use it, more than half do.

The CAT4 Level D test is for children in Year 7 (or Secondary 1 in Scotland), the Level D CAT4 is used. With the same structure as tests for Level A-G, there are four types of questions separated into three parts, with each part taking between 20 and 26 minutes to complete. As the levels progress, the difficulty increases to match the age of the child taking the assessment.
Part One has figure classification and figure matrices, with 48 questions in total and taking 20 minutes to complete.
In Part Two, there are three types of question – verbal classification and verbal analogies, both with 24 questions that need to be answered in eight minutes. This is followed by number analogies, which has 18 questions and a 10-minute time limit.
The last section is Part Three, which consists of 18 number series questions to be answered in eight minutes, and then figure analysis and figure recognition that both have 18 questions to be answered in nine minutes.

Number Analogies are similar to Verbal Analogies in that numerical analogies are completed. Participants identify the number that holds a relationship to the second number analogous to the relationship between the first and third numbers.
Recognising and applying patterns in a numerical context is assessed using logical reasoning.
The Number Series aims to identify the pattern or rule governing a sequence of numbers and select the next number in the sequence.
This section evaluates the ability to recognise and extend numerical patterns using numerical reasoning and sequence analysis skills.
In Figure Analysis, the underlying pattern or rule is identified in order to predict the next figure in a sequence. It is imperative that test takers apply analytical skills to recognise and continue visual sequences.
The ability to discern and extend visual patterns is enhanced through analytical thinking and pattern recognition in a visual context.
In Figure Recognition, individuals must choose an option from a set of options that corresponds with a given pattern or criteria.
