Standard Chartered

Good news on the application front; I've been contacted by Standard Chartered, and they're going to confirm a time and date for first round interview. Given that there's little about the application process, I'll be using this thread to note down some of the questions I got, hopefully for posterity. Extremely apprehensive about having to speak Arabic in my thick North African accent.

Once again, I'd just like to extend my thanks to redsuperted for clearing up that second question for me! First ever first round interview (other internship was really through networking), so it's almost certainly not going to be plain sailing.

Watch this space for more info.

    Sorry for the late reply.

The next stage for me involved going to the local head office where I along with other shortlisted candidates were given a case study which we had to discuss and come to a decision within a time frame.

After that, had to do a presentation and another one to one interview before being called for the final interview with the Head of Consumer Bank

Basically they just want to see how you perform as a team player, how you can handle criticism and responsibility.

If you have any further question, or require more assistance, please do knock me :)

    Hey,

From what you said, I think chances are more that you might have to give an online presentation, perhaps through skype. But i did know some people from London UK, who had to fly to Africa for their presentation. So it's quite uncertain how exactly you will be approached.

In the mean time, just go through the financial report given to you and look at it from a manager's point of view. Think that you are the head of a company and this is your company's financial report. As a head, what will you be looking for? what do you understand? how does it impact you? and where do you think you can improve?

I would like to discuss further with you. Please note down my following contacts and do add me.

    1) email: [email protected]
    2) Skype: mohammed.neyaz.shaheed

Looking forward to talk with you :)

      Hey neyaz

I take it you went thru SC recruitment process up to the offer stage. I have applied for the IGP and I have done my online case study and I am now waiting for details for the next stage which is a Business Discussion. Can you share your experiences for this stage. What exactly is involved? What type of questions do they ask and how can I prepare for them? Is a Business Discussion the same as a panel interview?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Dear Moshin,

Sorry for the late reply. It's been a while since i was active here. The best preparation tool i would suggest would be for you to study GMAT and/or GRE.
In my case, the online tests and case studies were all multiple choice questions.
After the online tests, i was called to the local head office for my case study. There, i had to compete with other shortlisted candidates. We had to do some team based work, individual presentation and another one to one interview. Mostly they want to see how you are as a team player and how you plan on solving and/or approaching any particular problem.

If there's any more thing i can help you with, please do not hesitate to inform me :)

By the way, which country are you applying for?

      Hello,
Thank you for taking time out to reply. :)

I have applied for Pakistan- coverage and corporate finance IG programme. Since I am currently working in Saudi Arab, they gave me a link to proceed to the case study online as I am not available in the country I chose (which is my home country). They have been very co-operative in facilitating me as much as they can.

I did my case study yesterday on the 22th. I was very nervous about the case before but finally got the guts to do it :P It went fine and was more scenario based multiple choice case study where I was given a role of a manager and I had to respond to a lot of queries of people from different departments. Basically they were checking how I would respond to different scenarios and sometimes would require additional information as to why I have chosen that answer. Yes, it was tricky as they were judging me on many current issues that people face these days. They made it as if I was replying to emails on MS outlook and had many different documents attached for me to conclude an answer.

Yes I need some help on moving forward to the next step. The current email from Scb say " Thank you for completing the Case Study. We will evaluate your collective results and will contact you shortly regarding the next steps. As indicated this was one of three activities that make up the final assessment stage. There will be a presentation that you need to prepare for and information on when and what to prepare for will be communicated with you shortly. " They have provided me with the half year financial report of 2013 to get familiar with the company's current performance. the Presentation will be a video conference I think. I want to ask how should I go about preparing for the presentation and business activity. I have given many presentations before but mainly in my university level :) this would be difficult and also that too on video conference.
I just hope I can do well and try to go ahead.
      Thanks
      Mohsin

Hi guys! Its one week now since I had my telephone interview and I was told I will get a response within 5 days. I got a response after 2 days which states that:

'We are pleased to inform your completed application including your telephone interview and online assessments are currently being reviewed as part of the selection process.
We will be contacting you via email in due course with details of the next steps.'

Does this mean that I am successful in my telephone interview and qualified for the next stage? Is this the same message everyone gets if successful at the tel interview stage?
Please tell me guys because I am very curios...

I applied for the IGP - Wholesale Banking. After completing the Wave Focus Test, I was told my results were being reviewed. 2 days later, I was sent a rejection letter and that my application will be reviewed for the alternate programmes. 3 days after that, I got another email saying my Wave results were being reviewed for Wholesale Banking. Now I'm just confused or perhaps, cautiously optimistic.

I completed my telephone interview this week. I'm not quite sure what the pass mark is but there is quite a few people who are at the same stage as you so don't worry because not everyone getting through will go all the way so you may still be invited to go further.

  • 12 October 2012 - 3:29pm
    • jahuss65

    @hbee

There is an automatic pass mark which if you exceed then you get the next test. If you don't reach that mark then your application will be on hold until enough people fail at interviews etc so more canddiates are required.

Still expecting to hear from the Talent Mgt Team regarding my issue. I feel that the right thing should be done even if the vacancy has been filled up - change the update on my profile to "Vacancy filled up" and not "Unsuccessful in the 2nd Assessment".

It beats my imagination how one could be unsuccessful in an assessment one was neither invited to attend nor attended. It really does.

Don't worry ArsenalFC, I am sure there must have been some mistakes from their end, just have patience, and I hope and pray that everything turns out ok for you. In the main time, why don't you try calling the Head Office in London and explain them the situation....maybe that might help.

Best of luck, and don't lose hope

    Hamza,

It is not the fault of the UK office but rather the lady there has been helpful. I had my 1st assessment with the indian office though I presently reside in the UK after which my profile was updated with the details.

But these guys do not reply their emails at all even if you send them in tens in a day. They will just ignore u. It was that frustration that made me search for the phone number of the UK office and the lady has been helpful.

It is still a surprise to me how it can be said that I failed an assessment I was not even invited for n much more of a concern that going by the trend, none of my emails will be responded to and I will be kept in the dark not knowing the way forward.

Some1 actually said that it seems they have just been managing me and the 1st assessment was just one way of doing that - cos the feeling is that the vacancy has been filled up since. But I think that if that was true, then they would have just told me that I was not successful at that first stage. Though it would have been a big surprise, I wouldn't have done anything about it.

Well you only try your best in life and live with the results. But i still think that a process that gives every successful candidate equal opportunity at the next stage would definitely be better.

    Still keeping my fingers crossed

    Cheers

    Hi hamiza,

    Plss can u answer the qst below;

    Hi,

Can any1 give me some advice plss?

I passed my First Assessment for Consumer Banking IG programme by God's grace. I got the email on 21-05-12 and was asked to wait for details of next stage of the recruitment process.

However to my greatest surprise today, I received an update that my Second Assessment was unsuccessful. I have not been invited for any 2nd assessment so you can now see why I was very much surprised by the update.

I called the recruitment office in the UK (cos I don't have the mobile number of the office in India that did the ist assessment) and the lady told me that it might be that the vacancy has been filled up but promised to send an email to them.

I applied for the Nigeria Programme and have been on this process since November 2011.

Actually do not know what to do now since I have been asked to wait. If actually the vacancy has been filled up, the n it was quite unfair as I never asked the m to defer any of my interviews and would actually believe that everybody should have been given equal opportunity.

    Can somebody advise plss

    Thank you

Hi everyone . I was interviewed for consumer bank fast track program yesterday... Today I got mail stating that my application is currently under review... I applied for Indonesia, my own country :)

According to my experience, the questions are about:

    1. Self Describe
Question like : tell me what are your strong characteristic?
    2. Achievement and ability question
    Experience that make you outstanding
    3. Capability Question
Question : tell me the time when you have to convinced the other for accept your opinion? what's example?
    4. Question related with your motivation to join SCB

    Hope it helps

Guys, so since I am in overseas at the moment, recruitment team proposed a phone assessment for the last stage of selection.. interviews and presentation are over phone. I find a bit weird as I never deliver a presentation over phone. Just wonder if anyone has this kind of experience before, and share with me. Greatly appreciated.

      • neyaz

Hey Windstruck, congrats on reaching this far, hope you do well in your interview, although i must say, i too find it very odd giving presentation via phone...anyways, don't think too much about it, just give it your best shot, and if it helps, try dressing up formally and sit infront of a mirror while giving the interview. it might help in reducing the oddness lol

Good luck and do keep us informed :)

Yeah, I have gone through all the pages of this thread. Yet I just wonder if there are any technical (financial) question popped up? As I remember during my phone interview, every single financial point I mentioned, the interviewer asked me to elaborate in details about it. So .. just wanna be prepared a little bit. Well, you dont have to tell me what exactly the questions, as that might be not fair for you but just yes or no if possible. Thanks much! :) And good luck for tomorrow!

Hi Neyaz, thanks much for your reply. I would think so too. Just suspect when everything has been processed so fast. So now im waiting for them to contact.. Not sure how long this gonna tale, ihope it will be fast as the app due dated is drawing close.. If im not wrong you are having final interview today? Best of luck!!!
So do you guys mind sharing some tips about what to be asked in the next round for the late birds like me :D is it going to be technical? I apply for consumer banking igp singapore btw..
    Thanks a lot everyone!

@ WIndstruck. Actually my final interview is tomorrow (31st May, 2012) by 10am...sorry for the mistake lol.

Well like you already mentioned, the app due date is drawing close so hopefully they will be quite prompt in replying. During my second assessement, there were 3 candidates including myself. We were given a case to study and discuss with ourselves within a certain time limit. After that we were each called individually for the face-to-face interview and presentation.

I don't know if the process varies country wise, but if you look at some of my previous posts, you will find some information regarding the process i went through.

Guys, i applied to IGP, just had phone interview yesterday, then early morning today i got a sysmetic message saying that my completed app is under review, then just now i checked in the system the status of the progam and saw a message saying that my first assessment has been successful. Sorry for my retardedness, by first assessment they meant the first phase of tests or it meant my interview was successful? I kinda think it would be the latter but just want to confirm with you guys those that have received similar message about what it means... Thanks a lot. Im so nervous now. So your sharing would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Windstruck, according to the official SCB website, the first assessment is the phone interview you had, and the message stating that your first assessment has been successful means that you have been successful in your phone interview. Hopefully, you will be contacted or given a mail regarding the second assessment.

      All the best :)

I applied for the Consumer Banking Fast Track Program. And after my first assessment, the next stage for me was a second assessment where I was given a case study to discuss with other candidates, after that the next step is the final interview.

The second stage was held in Bangladesh, I don't know exactly if it is usually held in the country I applied for or the country I am currently residing in because, I am currently residing and also applied for Bangladesh.

      Hope it helps.

Hi everyone. Just got a mail informing me that i am through to the final interview which will be held in the same location as my second assessment. Hi everyone, just wanted to share my experience regarding my second assessment. In total there were 3 candidates including myself, we started off by the interviewer giving us a case study and for us to come up with our ideas within a certain time limit, then we were told to discuss the ideas among ourselves and come to a common ground of understanding, again within a time limit. After that, we were told to wait outside the room and the interviewers will be calling us one person at a time so that we can give a presentation and discuss regarding any topics of the case study they wish to emphasis on. For that we were given 5 mins of preparation and 3 mins for the presentation.

From my observation, i think they wanted to see how we perform as a team, if we are good in communicating, convincing, have patience and how to deal with criticizms, negativities and pressures.

So there's my second assessment, hope it helps and also praying that i go through. Best of Luck to everyone. :)

Hi BADOX, i too applied for CB Fast Track Prog. but i applied for Bangladesh. The procedures i went through are as follows:

1.) I completed a number of online tests.
2.) I got a call from a foreign number to book a date for my first assessment telephone interview (Which was on 1st May, 2012).
3.) I got a mail on 2nd May, 2012 stating that my assessment along with my prior results were being under review and that i will get a mail stating my next step of action.
4.) I got a mail on 15th May, 2012 stating that i have been shortlisted for the country evaluation for the Standard Chartered Bank, Fast Track Graduate – Consumer Banking, it also mentions my next level of assessment with date, time and venue.

According to the site, after the first assessment, there will be a final interview (which i think is my next level of assessment) and the final decision will be given within 72 hours.

Can anyone please advice me regarding what happens in the next assessment and what type of questions will be asked? my next assessment will be on 20th May, 2012 so any help will be greatly appreciated...Thanks

This thread has been massively helpful in my application. The information provided here, with a little extra research outside, should be more than sufficient to prepare a prospective candidate in apply for one of the graduate trainee roles available.

I received an offer for the Consumer Banking Fast Track a short while back, and I applied in early January, so for those still on the waitlist there should be a chance they might call you up still. You could always try contacting the communication center to check on your application status. All the best!

      hello Ahmad00
i aslo experienced the same problem but i remained hopeful that they will respond. i did my tel interview on 28 feb and they only called me for face to face on 03 April, i got feedback about the outcome two weeks later and got invited for another face to face three days later. so dont lose hope, some people have waited for months to be invited. i guess some countries respond quicker than others, but the waiting thing seems to be a problem. if u ask me im beginning to think its a strategy to get out of the way those who applied for the sake of applying and not because they were dying to work for them. my advice is that u dont give up hope. Good luck

We receive a considerable number of applications from all over the world and regret that we cannot personally interview each applicant. Places are limited and we recommend you complete your application as soon as possible.

The first step of the application process is to complete your detailed application form and then you will be invited to a series of online tests prior to the personal interview rounds. The whole online application process takes approximately 3 hours if all the tests are completed.

The waiting is so frustrating, i just want to get over and done with my assessment center, personally i think its very unprofessional to leave people in a larch, the least they could do is to communicate. However in visiting other forum it seems very common that the employers don't communicate promptly and adequately. I encourage you to remain focused and prepared so that on the day we wont be found wanting. Good luck to those(including i) waiting to go for my assessment center

    Hi DimSumBum

    Thanks for ur info:D

Btw, I had the feeling that status : On hold after People Assessment" means you have already passed, my friends failed People Assessment and few days later, he received a regret mail from StandChart

    • 27 December 2011 - 2:08pm
      • DimSumBum

Yup! I passed. I'm now waiting for the second assessment. Does anyone know what the second assessment would be for Singapore IGP CB?

  • 27 December 2011 - 5:53am
    • DimSumBum

    These are my questions:

    - Why the IGP?
    - What should the bank do in the next 5 years?
    - Example of helping someone overcome a struggle
    - Example of managing a project
    - What is your greatest strength and how will it help the bank?
    - Example where your opinion differs with somebody else's
    - If you have multiple offers what are the deciding factor?

@sergea, thanks for saying exactly what i intended to say up here.

@Hamza, please dont take this the wrong way but with all due respect, this forum is here to inform, help and encourage applicants who are currently in the recruitment process. Having gone through some of your posts, I think it would be very beneficial to this community if you desist from posting discouraging statements up here and presenting the Standard Chartered Bank recruitment process in such a negative light..I believe you had a very GOOD reason for applying in the first place. Imagine people reading such discouraging statements just before having their interviews....
That said, would like to wish you good luck in the process!

    @ Hamza

"biasedeness", "role model answers", "telephonic interview", "forgot sake", "All people cant go in the space shuttle to see the moon"

hahaha these are just few of the statements that you have probably learned while doing your PhD in English Literature that I'm guessing you got in addition to the cfa level 2 :P

I'm still struggling to understand why would a graduate from a top university with a cfa level 2 apply to a GRADUATE program in CONSUMER BANKING.

This is so freaking hilarious. Anwz forget what I told you in the previous post, I have changed my mind & I want you to continue on posting because you are entertaining us with your stupidity. It's nice to have a good laugh while waiting for our results :D

Look Hamza I don't want to sound rude, but from the way I see it you're just a stupid psycho. One minute you say you passed and the other you tell us you failed! One day SCB are having a conspiracy on you & your friends and the next day you want answers for the interview questions and details about the final assessment.

& as if it is not enough that we gave you the interview questions, you go ahead and bombard us with your private messages and wall posts DEMANDING the answers for the questions!

Maybe if you learn how to talk and communicate with others and start thinking of answering your own interview questions you'll have a better chance in this program. I said "maybe" because in addition to those 2 points, your English language is worse than that of a 5 year old Zimbabwean kid with learning disabilities.

Do me and the rest of the WikiJob community a huge favor & go sit in a room with your friends and discuss the conspiracies that all major banks and institutions are preparing to destroy you.

    With all due respect,

    Sergea

  • 13 December 2011 - 9:14am
    • sihong17

Guys, thanks for the tips about interviews.
I finished 2nd assessment but failed. It was WB-FM
One thing I can say for face to face interview is that questions will be different from interviewers, countries and there would be brain teaser and some basic technical questions. So, if you're not finance major like me, I think it's better to be aware of that.
Well, of course, there were the questions like
-Why FM? what do you know about it?
    -the biggest challenge in life,
    -most favorite subject
    -Strengths and weaknesses
    -other competency questions...
Now I stunned a bit. It was my last chance. not sure if there's other banks I can apply from now, anyway.
'Be yourself' is best advice, I think.

Good luck with all of you posted.

      • gm91

sorry to hear you didnt make it sihong17. if you dont mind answering, what city did you apply for WB-FM?

  • 13 December 2011 - 5:42am
    • melchan215

which country have you applied to? i think they might be hiring more people in some countries, and less in others. and the recruitment timeline will be different for different countries i think. did your friends fail the phone interview or actual interview? i'm sure your friends are capable and intelligent people. but i think interviews have a lot to do with luck. it's really hard to know what they're looking for. they might just simply don't fit in with the firm's culture. or your friends might just not have clicked with the interviewers? well im sure your friends will land something with other top banks. any luck with other grad programmes?

    Hi everyone,

I have received an email saying that my application is on hold after the retesting. Is anyone on the same boat as me?

Status: On hold after PeopleAssessments test

  • 12 December 2011 - 9:52am
    • melchan215

    Hello,

I have recently completed a telephone interview (about two weeks ago). After the telephone interview, I was asked to retake a logical reasoning test online. After the test, they sent me an email stating that there are a lot of applicants etc etc and if you don't hear back from us within 4 weeks, then you can consider your application unsuccessful. However, last Tuesday, I got an email saying that "your application is currently under review and a member of their recruiting team will contact you in due course." Is this normal? Has anyone been invited to an assessment centre in Hong Kong? Are they putting me on hold? Does anyone know if their recruiting process usually take this long?

I saw in earlier posts that some people's status stayed that way and then all positions got "filled". Don't want that to happen to me....

      my status is
You will shortly receive an email confirming the outcome and
whether we would like to invite you to the next stage of the selection process.

because i applied for Consumer Banking Fast Track program ~_~, i did 3 tests already : numerical, logical and roles strengths, i still have essay questions if i passed roles strengths, but they did not revert back to me i passed or not....it just yesterday so i think i will get their answer at Monday

so your status means you are going to have a phone interview soon if you're successfully being shortlisted, congrats ^^

lastly, i am not chinese, can i still apply in hong kong region ?

      • 10 December 2011 - 3:18pm
        • gm91

        i hope so, thanks.

i am not chinese or a cantonese speaker but am from HK. i believe you can only apply to one position with SC per academic/recruiting year, so i dont think you'll be able to apply to a HK position if you already applied to a SG one.

        will keep you updated

    Had my interview today for 65 minutes. I spoke to a wonderful gentleman. He asked numerous questions such as;

What should banks do in face face of the financial crisis, what risks do international banks face, an example of a situation when you helped someone get over a challenge and many more I cannot remember.

I was told from my country they are looking for one person. I pray that am that very one person.

      hi nguyen,

i have the same status to you and applied for a program in HK. just curious, did you get this status after completing the math, logic, and roles strength assessment tests?

i applied for the intl grad programme in hk, and have had this status for the past 5 days. hoping that someone will be in touch soon, probably a busy time in the region for HR right now?

    • Dennis.claude

@endede .. so are they available dates to choose from when you click on the link. If there are none that means they probably tried your line at the same time you previously booked and you were not reachable or you provided a wrong number format. Just check things well and keep mailing the HR. Good luck to you.

  • 4 December 2011 - 9:45am
    • Rasmoon

@ Dennis.claude below is what my status says

Candidate Disposition: Invite to first assessment

We are pleased to invite you to attend the first assessment.

To arrange the date and time, please click on the link titled ‘Schedule First Assessment’ in the left-hand menu and select from the available dates and times.

PLACES ON OUR PROGRAMMES ARE LIMITED AND WE THEREFORE RECOMMEND THAT YOU BOOK YOUR INTERVIEW SLOT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Please note that this invitation may be automatically withdrawn if all interview slots are booked by other candidates or positions are filled by earlier applicants.

During your interview, we will ask you to describe some past real-life examples and experiences you have encountered to demonstrate your skills and capabilities. You should think about a number of specific situations and experiences that you could discuss with us. Try to remember the exact situation – when, where, who – the task or challenge you were faced with, what actions you took and the outcomes.

Also please take the time to review the programme and role you have applied for. Be prepared to discuss why you have selected Banking instead of other industries, how Standard Chartered compares to our competitors, and your motivations for the business function you have applied for.

Strong communication skills are critical. You should aim to be clear, concise, detailed and professional in your interview.

    Kind regards,

    Standard Chartered Talent Acquisition Team.

    hi guys,
Am new to this forum and think its a really great resource.
I just want to seek some clarification on this. For all those here who have had their first telephone interviews, is it with the HR from the country you applied to or its with the london HR?
Am just about having mine and a bit unsure about this bit.
Also, I would appreciate it very much if someone could please private message me the london HR contact number...searched for it but cant seem to find it.

thanks a lot and all the best to all still in the process!!

Is this normal? will my interview be conditional upon me passing this test? is the test difficult? Please let me know if any of you has gone through this before.

Hey guys I'm a new member to this forum. I would like to thank you all for sharing your experiences in the interview; with your help I was able to pass the phone interview and am now invited to the final assessment.
In my turn I'd like to share my experience with others have haven't done their 1st interview yet like hisham.

Here are the questions I was asked:

    - Introduce Yourself
    - Why banking?
    - Why did you apply for the program?
    - Biggest challenge facing SC
    - Example of a time you worked in a team
    - Example of a time you motivated others
    - Example of a time you helped someone overcome a struggle

The interview took around 50 minutes.

I still have the final assessment and once I do it I'll tell you guys how it went. Meanwhile can someone who has done the final assessment please tell us how it was and what it consisted of?

Thank you & Good Luck for all of you!

    Sergea

  • 29 October 2011 - 2:24pm
    • exit87

yeah i also had these questions..i forgot to mention...

what wil eb the deciding factor if u have more than two offers?

how u dealt with people with different culture?

    what was ur strategy?

I have not received any email regarding the 2nd assessment...I applied for HR IG programme...

    • 30 October 2011 - 11:14pm
      • cheesencrackers

I think the point of the question was to see if you can converse and bond with ppl who come from diff places...since ig will ultimately have international exposure and assignments...so it's just how to portray yourself as someone who is able to do that comfortably?

  • 29 October 2011 - 11:48am
    • cheesencrackers

I had similar questions as exit87...some other ones included:

in the next five years time, what should standard chartered do to grow/develop as a company (or something along those lines)

if u had more than one offer, whats the one deciding factor for you

do u have any experience communicating/dealing with people on an international basis

an example when you persevered through a struggle

an example when you helped somebody else overcome a struggle

i applied for wholesale though..so maybe thats why the questions are slightly different?

i also passed the phone interview...got the computer-generated email about 1-2 hours after phone interview

the sc app center status says to choose a time slot for second assessment...but no time slots are available as of this moment

  • 28 October 2011 - 10:59am

iyeah i knw the girl who interveiwed me said the same that within 5 working days you will knwo but i got an email the same day only..noww i am waitng for the next round..if any one of u have progressed to the 2nd round please do share your exoeriances.

  • 26 October 2011 - 10:08am
    • exit87

    helo..

I jus gave my telephone interviews...

    Following are the questions:

Tell me something about ur self
    why SCB
What do u know about the program
why do u want to apply for this program

how is the bank performing in ur country?
what is the biggest risk banks are facing?

Your strengths? how do u think ur strength will help the company?

    Situation questions:

Tell a time when you handled a project?
    how did u managed?
They will ask questions regarding the example you will give//

How do u handle with people?
give a situation where you handled difficult people?
    how did u handled it?

These are some of the questions.
Go and search on internet competency based questions..the questions will be the same.It depends on how you answer it.

    Good luck...
I just gave my interview.Cleared it.Now waiting for another interview. If any one has progressed towards the second interview please share your experience.I applied for HR IGP programme

    Hi neyo99
A similar thing happened to me, i had passed the telephone interview and was waiting for the second interview. I waited from february to May when i started sending emails saying i was still waiting for the second interview invite, only to get a reply that the positions were full..... IMAGINE THAT!...i suggest you follow it up actively before its too late for you too, i thought being such a prestigious bank, they would have a better recruitment system in place and give everyone who passes their assessments before their closing date a chance.... i'm so disappointed!

    • bowman

    @mowsul
I guess the way they conduct these interviews differ from country to country and it also depend on where you are located in relation to the position you are interviewing for! most people will have the business interview if they are applying from the country they want to work. I didnt get the business interview, only had two telephone interviews (applying for a position in africa from the uk)
    @choson86
the first interview is about the bank as a whole and about yourself and the second interview is much more about yourself and abit about the programme.
goodluck all, i have got an offer!!
the posts in the blog have been veryx4 helpful...

Thought I should give some information on how my interview went. Ok I think its different for each country, mine was in Nigeria. We had a group and one-on-one interview. For the group interview, we had to review a report by ourselves with some questions included. We were called in to discuss the answer to the question amongst ourselves while they watch us interact. After that, each person was called for a personal interview and presentation of the report. hope it helps

I got the telephone interview last week and passed it.
I am currently in London but I applied to Asia.. I am wondering how they are going to organise the face to face interview...might be another telephone or video call. Im confused with interview process.. After all tests and essays, the first interview is the telephone interview and then the face to face interview is the final?
When I asked to HR he said the following interview will be the last one but it seems there is another interview when I read all posts!! :S Please help me if there is anyone having or had the same situation!
    Thank you!

Hi Resurrector1! Which country are you applying for?

Is there anyone knows how long SCB will get back to us after the final assessment? I thought they would make the decision within 72 hours after the final assessment but my status is still "under review".

Sorry! but as suggested you just try, you may not know may be it will work out. What were some of the questions they asked, both competency based and technical?

  • 18 April 2011 - 12:20pm
    • asar

I support that. Just try you may not know, it might work out. Anyway, which of the interviews specifically? Is it the telephone or face to face? And what were the kind of questions they asked you?

  • 18 April 2011 - 12:02pm
    • KTYM

Unfortunately, I didnt make it after the first interview. My friend advised me to email them again because sometimes people dont make it after the 2nd stage and they might give you another chance.

    What do you guys think?

Sorry to hear that. Was it the phone interview that you didn't pass or your first face to face coz it depends on how far you were in the process and who you initially impressed

      • 18 April 2011 - 12:34pm
        • KTYM

I passed the phone but didnt pass the first face to face. Guess i was more prepared for technical questions than the competency questions such as tell me a time when....kind of stuff.

        • 18 April 2011 - 2:39pm
          • adamzia

what type of questions were asked by them in face to face interview? what type of competency and technical questions?

        • 18 April 2011 - 1:14pm
          • GoMaswe

I suggest asking for feedback from whoever interviewed you so that they see your interest and keep you in mind.In any case, the new application cycle begins on 1 August so at least you'll be better prepared then. In the meantime, work on strengthening your CV so that when they ask you competency questions next time, you give stronger examples. All the best

has anybody heard back yet from London WB internship whether they have got the internship or not?

  • 8 April 2011 - 3:48am
    • GoMaswe

Hey guys, I'm applying to Botswana WB.Its 03:30am, but I can't allow myself to sleep coz I'm doing research for the essays. I gotta work harder coz my background has nothing to do with maths, finance or banking(hence I'm pleasantly surprised I even made it this far!) so everything is new to me. I didn't even know what 'equity' was 'til I googled it!

I love the fact that we're all so united by SCB's challenging interview process.

Btw, does anybody know what they do if you don't live in the country ur applying to? Should I pass essay stage, I really don't want to have my interview in the country I reside in.

    • MissM.

    Guys,

For anyone who is preparing for their face-to-face interviews for Wholesale Banking, I'd mostly recommend 2 things:

    1) read everything possible about the Bank, starting from the website, annual reports, news published on their website, etc. and of course focus on the division where you applied

    2) read FT, Economist, Bloomberg, etc to know what's happening and pay special attention to any news that could related to SCB

Apart from these things, try not to stress, relax, be nice and smile to people. After all they must like you as well:) Being smart is one thing, but having nice colleagues is another!

    Good luck to everyone!

my second interview was like 15 to 20 minutes long (almost half because of my questions). the one who interviewed me was the hr vp in our country.

it was so short, i'm afraid it was because they're no longer interested. but i think that i did well in it anyway, for all that's worth.

    so i don't know what's going to happen next. -___-;

        • whistling_hyde

        hi asar and obza,

mine was very short, only 15-20 minutes. the interviewer just asked one question: why i applied for igp. but as i just learned today, having a short interview is not necessarily bad, as i've just been called for the next stage :)

i applied somewhere in asia; that's as far as i can say.

    Hi,

    1. wanted to ask after you fill in the application form, do you get directed to the online tests?

    2. What are these tests- numerical and reasoning? Also do we need to provide answers for competency questions too ( is this in personality part?)

    3. Do we have a time limit for the numerical tests?

    4. I am a British citizen and interested in the corporate real estate strategy programme as well as the wholesale banking. Can we only choose one? Also, regarding the British citizen query - says we need to have visa requirements could I be able to apply to the UAE and Singapore as they do offer temporary work visas right?

    5. Is it worth applying to Singapore grad scheme for the real estate programme as the deadline is for 31st march.

    tthanks! x

      HI,

i applied for the igp (singapore) too.. now.. for near 3 weeks... my status is still successful after first assessment and no news after that... Can enlighten me on whats next? and how long would be the wait?

      • 27 March 2011 - 9:40am
        • whistling_hyde

        @resurrector
i think that as long as your status says successful you don't have to fret. they bothered changing your status so i bet they already have you lined-up for the next stage. be worried if there was no change in your status at all :)

however, you should give yourself a time limit. if it has been a month since the change in your status, then you should contact scb already, maybe even the one who interviewed you in the first assessment.

in my case, i received a call (yes, a call rather than an email) from our local office for the 2nd interview 4 days after my first assessment. but then i applied in a different country.

    Hi HELPME!

The face-to-face interview was competency-based. However, there were just 2-3 competency questions for me. The interviewer asked a lot of random questions so there's nothing you can prepare much. Do think of some examples in advance for the competency questions though. The interviewer was very friendly. He even shared his own experience at SCB. I think the face-to-face interview at SCB is one of the smartest interview that I have ever had. They really know how to test your skills and personality.

    Hope that helps.

    • choson86

    hey MissM.

yeah i took the final interview but mine wasn't for an internship but for a job. while i really did prepare myself to know whats going around the globe both financially and politically, my final interview had more questions about talking about my resume, the essays that i wrote for SC and stuff like dat. i got random questions like did i do any community service during college, what courses did i like the most, what is my weakness, etc etc. so it was more or less like the first interview in a way. i don't know if it's good or bad but my interview i think was no more than 30 minutes.. it was very interactive and i actually had fun with it. however,,, as i said, i do not have an answer yet lol... well all the best for you too!

    regards,
    Sang Jun

    Hi choson86,

Well, to be honest 2 weeks seems like a long time. If I were you, I'd give them a call.

Btw, was it the final round? I'm having mine for WB but for Summer Internship on the coming Tuesday. Could you shedy any light on what the final interview was like? What was the structure, what questions did they ask, etc? I've applied to London, so I'm pretty sure the application process varies, but the more I know, the better!

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards,

    hey ppl,

I applied for the WB division IG program in Korea and finished my final interview March 4th which is about 2 weeks ago. Did any of you guys hear back from SC yet? I'm not sure whether I should contact them and ask about the results or just wait like this... I really do hate waiting lol

  • 15 March 2011 - 4:14pm
    • MissM.

    To kyuno3,

No worries, if you prepare yourself, then you'll be fine! If it happens that you didn't get the question or didn't understand what the interviewer said, simply ask them to repeat! If you stil didn't get it, ask them to rephrase it. And first rule - try to be relaxed BUT also sound confident and competent. For example, few times I refered to something I've read on FT or somewhere else, what always makes a good impression! If you get a tough question, take your time, think what you won;t to asnwer. I had two questions that I wasn't sure how to answer, but I said 'I need a moment to gather my thoughts' and it helped. Even though silent moments are awkward over the phone, it's much better to think about your answer rather than reply quickly but say nonsense!

And she did interrupt few times but in few cases because I must have said enough and in other cases we had a nice chat rather than just Question and Answer. This is when I was talking about the unique traits of SCB.

    To steventruong11,

I got my invitation to the phone interview rather quickly, maybe after a week or two. Last thursday is not that long time ago so just wait:)

  • 15 March 2011 - 3:52pm

    To missM

    Thanks so much !

My interview would be on tmr, i can prepare well from this info.

Did the interviewer just let u go answer for each question without interuption

    rather than communication?

Actually I am thinking how I will answer but pretty worried about keen follow-up questions. ( i am not a native speaker, so often nervous in suddenly questions.

    any comments?

  • 15 March 2011 - 12:02pm
    • MissM.

    Obza and Kyuno3,

I've had my telephone interview almost 2 weeks ago. I'll tell you what they asked me, but you will find lots of questions on TheStudentRoom http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/ There you'll find a thread about interships for 2011! I'd recommend having a read through!

My questions were quite predictible abnd I would divide them into 2 groups:

    Competencies
    1) Tell me about a situation when you had to communicate something clearly to a group of people?
    2) Tell me about a situation when you had to persuade or influence somebody to achieve your goal?
    3) Tell me about a situation when you had to work with a difficult person?
    4) Tell me about a time when you had to approach a complex piece of work/project and how did you do it?
    5) If you were to give somebody piece of advice, what's most important when working with different, diverse people?

    Bank Questions
    1) What is unique about SCB?
    2) Where does SCB earn most of it revenue?
    3) What are the key markets for SCB?
    4) Why SCB and why Wholesale Banking?

I think that's pretty much all. The interview last slightly over 40 mins. The lady was very nice and answered my questions at the end. In my case, an important thing was choosing top 2,3 roles I'd be interested in. I applied to Wholesale Banking and was hoping to get to Corporate Advisory (M&A) but this role WAS NOT available! She listed 5 other roles and asked me to name top 2 or 3.

I'd suggest guys you have a closer look at their 2010 Annual Report (was published on the day of my interview:p) - there you'll find almost all answers to their Bank-specific questions!

    Good luck!

Let me know how it went:)

    xxx

I applied for IGP Singapore and have went through the first interview 2 weeks ago. I'm invited for another round of interview tomorrow. Any idea what I'm up against? Not sure what to expect since i was notified that the interviewer is the HR lady that interviewed me during the first interview.

    Yup. Wholesale banking!
Well, aside from the kawaida questions about SC, and which languages I speak,
    The competency based questions were along these lines;
    - a time when you have overcome opposing view to achieve an objective
    - A time when you have had to convince people to share your view
    - A time when you have had a really hard objective to achieve and how you achieved it
    Think that was about it....

Did they mention when you could expect feedback from them?? btw, did your interviewer give you tips about the impending stages?

      • Agentzer0

They said they would let me know in a week and a maximum ov 2 wks.

No tips really but I had some questions that she said she couldn't answer but that I should bring up in the interview.

Just to update. Had the telephone interview yesterday. It went well.

    Some questions were;

Give an example of a time when you had to overcome difficulties or challenges to be successful.?

Give an example of a time when you motivated people to take action?

What makes standard chartered unique among banks?

I was also asked which other business languages I know .

The Standard Chartered IGP starts September 1st 2011 for all countries. Hope my application goes further.

      Sema Agentzer0,

Had my telephone interview on Friday as well, it was a bit different from yours, but still pretty straight forward, and the lady who was interviewing me was very friendly and helpful.

All the best in getting through the next round mate!

well shootshoot you don't have anything to worry about, I have been waiting for the past two months for a decision on a 40mins final interview. It did go well, but they have not come back to me yet. I am quite optimistic they would contact me though. so keep you fingers crossed. Anyway, has anyone heard of anyone with an appointment letter this year?

    • 24 April 2010 - 7:15am
      • shootshoot

wow, really? 2 months is a very long time! i've been afraid to check my email inbox coz usually they give you bad news via emails, and good news via phone. my interview went quite okay too, but i dont wanna expect anything now, too afraid it wont go well as expected. good luck for you kansasmm, please let us know when the good news arrive. :)

    Hi Shootshoot,

How did the interview go? I hope you made it through.

I have now been invited to do the numerical test.Any pointers? and what is the next stage after the numerical tests?

    • 22 April 2010 - 11:37am
      • shootshoot

Sorry for the late reply. I have been very busy lately. Did you do the numerical test yet? It was tricky, read the questions carefully and calculate fast. Keep your calculator next to you, prepare for a blank page of paper as well near you. Do the practice questions, and be calm, dont panic. You'll do okay.

I had my final panel interview a few days ago. It went about 30 minutes, kind of short, is that normal, guys?
They told me to wait for the result, I've been having my fingers crossed ever since. How long should I wait for the result? I'm not having a good feeling about this.

  • 14 April 2010 - 11:17am
    • toffee81

    Hi shootshoot,

All the best on the final interview. If you have made it this far you are going to make it through the last interview. Just be confident about it.

I am applying for wholesale banking. I just completed the application and was invited for the online logical test. Please tell me how you tackled it. I am shaking in my boots about it!!!!

    • 14 April 2010 - 4:28pm
      • shootshoot

How I wish that. I have failed many interviews before. I guess I'm not good at giving good first impression. *sigh*
Online logical test was not difficult, but you have to recognize the pattern very quickly. Do the practice questions as often as you like until you got all the questions right. The key is to recognize the pattern between the first picture with the next. If you can recognize it quickly, then you're good to go.

I did not finish 5 questions when I did that test, yet, I passed the test. You have to think really quickly. It helps if you have blank paper and pen with you when you're doing the test. Just be calm, do it in a quiet room, and make sure noone will disturb you during the test. You'll do okay. Good luck with the test.

Please please please wish me luck with the interview..

        • toffee81

All the best Shootshoot. You are going to make it and we are gonna meet someday ;-)). Just be confident!

I will do the test in a few days. Do you have to complete the test within the five days they give? And the practice questions are they the ones on Kenexa website or on assessment day website? Sorry for the many questions and thanks for the advice.

    Hi everyone,

I am glad to find this site. I am applying for the WB IGP 2010 in Kenya. I have just started the application. Can someone tell me the program deadlines or is everyone completing the steps at their own time.

Second question, what is the best way to tackle the online questions?

    @shootshoot,

I am sure of the essay questions, you can prepare them offline and post them when you get to that step.We also have somewhat different essay questions. Are we applying for the same program?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi OY, i answered 3 essay type questions and after my application was short listed, i was asked to schedule myself for a phone interview which was competency based. I was supposed to go for my second round in the london office but instead it was done on phone. My application is for Ghana but i was schooling in UK. The second round interview was with the business unit. It lasted for a bit over an hour and was very interactive. It was tailored to my application and what i wrote on the application form. The questions were very challenging though.

Thanks so so much for your prompt response.my application is for Nigeria.what sort of challenging questions where asked in the second interview?i guess the process is not exactly the same in all countries as mine is a presentation and group discussion for the second interview.

make sure you talk about their impressive track record over the last 7years, they just released their financials two weeks ago. Hit on that and make sure you know it inside out. Yeah, I think I met her already at a company presentation in London...there we were told that we would have a face-to-face
interview if we manage to reach the 1st round. Now I see that you had a phone one...no idea...

sorry to bother you so much, any technical questions?

do you have any idea if you get a written case study in the final round and what it consists of?
Seems to be specific to this company, never had it before.....

    when is your last round?

  • 5 November 2009 - 6:48pm
    • sweettooth

Yup I'm based in London. She was very friendly and knowledgeable, do make the best of the opportunity at the end of the interview to really ask her some questions about SCB to get information you wouldn't be able to get otherwise on the website!

It wasn't just one special question that I got asked during the interview, I would say most of it isn't standard, as it were....I think the only standard question I got asked was 'Why SCB?'

  • 5 November 2009 - 6:08pm
    • hazelground

    many thanks for that...

are you based in London or elsewhere?

    Was the interviewer nice?

Apart from the special question, do you feel that the rest were part of a standard interview?

  • 5 November 2009 - 5:43pm
    • sweettooth

I heard back really quickly, less than a week after I applied they asked me to schedule myself in for a telephone interview. The interview was supposed to be 30 minutes but mine went over by quite a bit....it was intellectually stimulating and enjoyable, and unlike any other banking interviews, it was alot about my fit and my personal opinions on issues related to my degree and various aspects of my life. I felt the questions were really tailored to the applicant and not really generic, so I guess there are alot of special questions but things you can't really prepare for, if that makes any sense? I would say know about the company but don't fret otherwise, it's more about the way you think than what you know.

  • 5 November 2009 - 5:14pm

I too applied for London IG....

how long after you submitted your essay questions did you hear back?

    • sweettooth

    Hi hazelground,

I applied to London IG, and my final round is early next week- fingers crossed it will be ok.

Hope you hear back soon! I was rather surprised by the thread you opened about SC's application system, as the process was overall quite smooth for me, but glad you still decided to apply. Which region are you applying for?

  • 4 November 2009 - 10:05pm
    • hazelground

    @mitchel316

Well, I am by no means an expert in essay questions, and particularly the ones by SC are quite challenging. But I feel you could have done much better in tackling those questions...

    @sweettooth

congrats for reaching so far with SC! Which region did you apply to?
I submitted my essay questions this morning, so I'm afraid I cannot help you much at the moment.

    when is your final round?

    Hi Folks,

I applied for the Zambian Wholesale Banking IG and successfully went through the online assessments, then I was asked to write 3 essays which I did about 3 weeks ago and I submitted them, and if successful, I would be called for interviews. Unfortunately, today they have just written to me that my application was unsuccessful. I really don't know where I went wrong in the essays. The Standard Chartered IG is the greatest leadership training program ever and to me, it's more than a dream and it's more than a career. I really wanted to be among the great over 75,800 staff from the over 115 nationalities, and to be frank, I really want to add more value to the bank just like Michael Rees has done since 2002. I thought I could also share the essays I wrote so that maybe someone might advise me where I went wrong.

    1. Please explain your understanding of the business function to which you are applying, and give two specific examples of how your skills and experiences will help you succeed?

Mike Rees heads Standard Chartered Wholesale banking.
Wholesale banking is a business of high value transactions.
Standard Chartered Wholesale Banking is made up of four business divisions namely Corporate Finance, Transaction Banking, Principal Finance and Financial Markets.
The Corporate Finance unit is responsible for the customisation of client solutions. The Principal Finance makes growth of Standard Chartered investments while the Transaction Banking runs the interfaces between the bank and its customers including its day to day cash management and online services. The Financial Markets is responsible for discovering competitive initiatives that are meant to satisfy customer demands.

Standard Chartered Wholesale banking is present in 70 countries with emphasis in the emerging markets and headquartered in Singapore and London.

      Mitchel316,

I read through your post and essay responses and thought I could offer some feedback, even though im not a specialist, but it may help you with future applications.

For me i didnt feel like you related your answers to banking enough, especially to wholesale banking, you need to be specifically talking about your skills and experiences that have allowed you to identify WB as your chosen career path, what those skills will help you to achieve within WB, how your character fits with the requirements of WB, basically you need to link your skills and personality to WB and how SCB would benefit from you within the WB team. Reading your responses, it felt like you were more skilled/ qualified for a technology based role, you discuss technology skills throughout but dont think about all the other things that make a banker - yeah you need to be able to use technology as a banker but technology isnt your role - banking is about people skills, numbers, team work, completing projects, hitting deadlines, perseverance, ambition, achieving targets, enjoying working with numbers, continual skill development etc, so to focus your answers on your technology skills will not help the reader see you as "an all round candidate", like i say, looks like your very suited to a technology role. Also, there is a fine line, you need to demonstrate leadership skills, but at the grad level you are pretty much at the bottom of the laddar and you wont be leading teams for quite a few years to come, so whilst you need to present yourself as someone who has the future ability and desire to lead, more importantly you need to show that you are a team player and someone who will add value to team discussions, be a positive source of new ideas and have positive eneregy. Lastly, i dont know how appropriate it is to discuss your intentions to shortly start looking for an MBA on a grad application, yeah, great, do an MBA after a few years of intensive experience, have a desire to do an MBA "at some appropriate time in the future" but at grad level the bank wants to know you are 100% committed to the role you are applying to and that your time and energy will be focussed on achieving great results as a grad, working for the bank, gaining great experience, not that your focussing on further academic study, like i say a few years down the line pursuing an MBA is a great idea, and a bank will maybe support it, but its not really appropriate on a grad application to say your looking to pursue an MBA now. Its all about how you word it, if you said "i have a desire for continual skill development and at some point in the future, when the time is right, I may pursue an MBA" this would probably be well recieved.

Anyway, just my thoughts and hope they are of use. Ive been in banking for 7 years so have a rough idea how people think.

      Good luck

    Hi!

I applied for HK CB's IG program, and had my final interview on 24th April. I still haven't received any phone calls from the HR, or any rejection emails.

Anyone here knows how long do you usually have to wait before getting an offer? Or rejection? >.<

I have been counting my days since the final interview...

I haven't received any clarification from HR. I've moved on and whatever happens, happens. I gave it my best so it's out of my hands. Interestingly, we were only 4 people in the final interview but they sent regrets to all of us. My case is special because I had already been notified that I was successful. Well, what can you do? I look at it this way, I was the best candidate and if they can't see that then it's their loss. Tell you how it goes.

Was just wondering for those of you who have received offers, what is the salary package offered? Theres no info on their website and thought it would be rude to ask during the interview. Thanks to everyone on this forum, all the info posted really helped during my interview

Now this is weird. I got a call from HR day before yesterday telling me that I had passed and they would send the offer package to me. Today, I got a regret email telling me that I was unsuccessful. I called them and nobody seems to know what's up. The Senior HR Officer I talked to said that they were yet to conclude the selection process. The other guy I spoke to told me to ignore the phone call confirmation. Now I am confused. This is the second time this guy is sending me a premature regret. In January he sent one but it was later rescinded. I was actually told that "he wasn't supposed to send regret emails". This is not good for my health at all. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? Am in Kenya by the way. If I don't get in, I'll never apply to the programme again. I don't think anything is worth this torture.

hi everyone, I've applied to Consumer banking in hk, had the group discussion (25 minutes)
last month and had the first interview with HR last week. I've been told that I will be invited to
the final panel interview if I passed the first Interview.

Can anyone share their experiences of the final panel interview of CB? someone said they will
ask you about the CB business, so I'm planning to study the products/services they provide, and
their future plans, any other suggestions?

    Many thanks

I also had the face to face interview in the beginning of February but I haven't received any communication from HR. I think it's still early given that i've had to wait for, on average, around 2 months between the stages. I'll be calling HR in early April if still there's no word. Don't worry, genchungxx. The long wait may turn out to be worth it. I've been told that SCB is very prompt with regret letters. If you haven't received one by now, chances are you won't be getting any. Chin up, bro.

hey guys! It only took me 2 days from my final interview to the phone call offer...that was super fast! I guess its because they already have a lot of information but normally the HR lady said it'll take 3 weeks. For the final interview, you should be expecting that they're ask you questions related to CB (i.e. if you're applying to CB). Well I was working at the Wealth Management department last summer so they asked me questions related to WM. Basically, you need to be updated with financial news. Most importantly, please spend an hour or so listening to the SCB's 2008 annual result podcast online. It'll help for sure!

Hello there! I would recommend that you try out the practice questions a several times. (they are mostly statistics and inflation questions, so the math involved are addition, subtraction, division and multiplication) * they are in fact harder than the actual test. Second of all, the actual test are mostly complicated addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
      - there are questions related to currency exchange, and there you have to clearly remember how to convert USD into Sterling and then Sterling into JPY (e.g. USD/Sterling X Sterling/JPY = USD/JPY)
      - there are questions that ask you how much profit are accounted for by a division of the company (basically looking for the right number and divide it by the total amount)
      - there are questions that ask you how is a ratio calculated, which requires you to work in reverse (e.g. P/E ratio is 1.5. Then you have to figure out which numbers they used to arrive at the 1.5. In other words, you might realize stock price is now 3 dollars, and the Earning after tax is 2, you need to quickly spot the fact that 3/2 = 1.5)

      My recommendation is:
      1. work the practice problems for at least 5 times and until you get every question right (you have 5 days to finish since you started the application, and you can do the practice questions INFINITELY many times)
      2. Familiarize yourself with currency exchange calculations
      3. Relax and get a night of good sleep
      4. have breakfast, get calculators, scrap papers and pen ready, lock yourself a totally isolated room (no phone calls, no parents calling you to wash dishes, no gf/bf bothering you)
      5. Get a stop watch to time yourself (allocate the right amount of time to each question)
      6. Don't stuck on one question, if you can't get it and the time is over, take your best guess and assume that is right.

Good luck and relax. It's not as hard as you thought!

i just applied for IG in HK in Finance a week ago. And i got my first group assessment on next tue...
Just wonder anyone here is applying for Finance since I just heard WB so far...
Please raise your hand if you apply for Finance...
Is the group assessment exercise the same as what we had at school? just a bunch of pages for a topic and discuss, then present afterward.
I know there will be 3 people in my group, so how many will they select in each group?
So they will ask you nth about SG? background? just discussion right?
    Merry Xmas...

My interview got postponed once, but it was all explained. My interview was extremely weird. Unless you're doing a maths degree, I don't think there's any use in me writing the questions down, haha!

Hi! I'm thinking of looking into banking for next year's milkround (painfully aware that i've missed this year!) So far I've come across a few useful websites and articles...this one http://www.thegatewayonline.com/article.php?id=186 was particularly good.

Any other suggestions of places I could look? Thanks!

      Hi there!

I was wondering if you can provide me any tips on how to pass the talent assessment at Standard Chartered.
I know that it is a personal test- but alot of my friends have failed to get through it.
I have seen my friends doing the test and tt seems that they are looking for a consistency in your answer...but I just don't know what they are looking for in the applicant!

How did you manage to pass the test?
Will be great if you can reply me back soon.
      Thanks!

  • 17 December 2008 - 8:33am
    • genchungxx

hmmm..good question, I know one other person who didn't pass in my group, but I hav no idea about the other one. I'm not sure how Standard Chartered chooses, i guess it also depends on luck...

  • 17 December 2008 - 8:01am
    • simonwusf

hey genchungxx: are you the only candidate who pass through the group discussion within the three of you guys?

  • 16 December 2008 - 1:55pm
    • genchungxx

Didn't know this would cause such a reaction...perhaps there has been some misunderstanding. We just wanted to know each other since we applied to the same division. And i can understand that some ppl feel wierd about writing their messages publicly. But i'll keep it in mind to prevent further misunderstanding : )

Anyway, I received a message asking about the Group Assessment for Standard Chantered. Unfortunately the sender doesn't accept private message...so i'm just going to say it here. The first stage in HK, which is the Group Assessment is basically a group discussion about a topic..where u discuss and present ur ideas.similar to those you have in class. U guys probably all had experiences in class discussions,so u know it's about ur ideas and how u interact with ppl...In my case, it lasts for like 20 mins. Hope this helps!

And yea, for those who got an unusual email, it means that u r going to the next stage coz i will be having a HR face-to-face interview in a few days. Any tips and advice?

    Sylar,

Private messages are a perfectly acceptable form of communication, and are useful to discuss individual matters that would clog up the forum otherwise. Rather than posting 7-8 irrelevant messages on this thread that would detract from the coherent structure, they can discuss matters by private message and then post the outcome of their discussion on the forum, if the feel is necessary/beneficial to the thread.

Private messages are a good method of networking and making friends on the website, and I've got to know a couple of Wikijob members fairly well through their use.

  • 16 December 2008 - 11:50am
    • Sylar

    Ftjai & genchungxx:

Why you guys use private messages instead of posting the questions and answers to share with everyone in the forum? I think this is not what a forum is supposing to function!

Come on, everyone here is sharing generously with each other, if you can benefit from the sharing, how come not to contribute back to the community of wikijob?

Seriously think that you guys should open your private messages here.

    Everyone else:

Thanks for your generosity and wish you guys all the best with the application!

    Hector,
Just be calm and confident. The questions are basically the ones posted above by HTAle. Practise them like crazy and you will be okay. The lady was very friendly but also very keen. Answer in short sentences because she'll pin you down on everything you say. Tell us how it goes. Wish you luck.

I've just had my telephone interview. It was very interactive though you need to think on your feet and remember to smile. It took around 18 minutes. Is that good or bad? I thought it was supposed to take 40 minutes. But they said they'll get back to me so am looking forward to that though probably in January.

sounds pretty nice, good luck man. dubai will be a nice place for u, if u love artificial stuff :-)

i'm still waiting, since i applied for local office, i think the first round will be face-to-face one (if i get it).
they replied that they will "advice nxt stage in the app process"
    what does it mean???
    what is "nxt stage"?
'ok, come around for interview' or 'lad, its time for you to go home'?

  • 14 October 2008 - 9:54pm
    • HTale

Sorry guys for the extremely late reply, but it's been absolutely hectic! Thank God, I got through, and the next round is an interview with senior management, either at the London office, or another telephone interview with the Dubai office. It's been quite a while, but here are the ones I remember:

    1. Why Standard Chartered and IB?
    2. What makes a good leader?
    3. What's our global footprint, where do we get most of our revenue, and how would current events affect our performance?
    4. Why Dubai?

The interviewer was amazing! She was extremely friendly, very informative, and very knowledgeable. I think of all the companies in the industry, this is the one to look out for. They're in all the emerging markets, and they're big in 3 of the BRIC countries, and they made steady gains despite the current climate

    Wish me luck!

      Hello,
I have applied for the SCB IG program for 2014 and I have successfully passed the personality test and the first telephone interview. Now I am invited for the first stage of the final assessment which is the Online Case Study. I have been searching online to find some material or thread which can help me get familiar to the case study assessment but cant seem to find anything. I need to urgently complete it because I have delayed the assessment for more than 1 week just because of the fear factor that I am not prepared to attempt the case. I would appreciate if you could provide information e.g how is the case study? what type of questions do they ask? is it more numerical or theory based? etc.
Need your help and would be grateful if you can provide me some info on the case study assessment. It will help me a lot. I am hoping to complete it in 2 days.

      Thanks
      Moshin

Me too, WB, but in Singapore, Asia.

No update as of yet, probably because of Eid holidays in the UAE. So any SCB applications should be patient because they'll almost certainly have a backlog!

jkid - yep, I'm applying to the international graduate programme, in the wholesale banking division. Which division and country have you applied to?

  • 4 October 2008 - 11:32am
    • jkid

Congrats! HTale. Are you applying for SCB internaitonal graduate program? me too. just submit app couple days ago.
fortunately SCB still doing very well this year. many other banks may freeze graduate programs.
    Please update! Thanks!

  • 30 September 2008 - 10:32am
