HSBC telephone interview

Evening folks!
I have just been invited to a telephone interview with HSBC private banking. I've read may of the other posts/threads on the telephone interview of which almost all were interviewing for the HSBC executive management programme, which i'm guessing may involve different interviews/questions? im not sure..

Just wanted some advice from you lovely fellows about what to expect, how long the telephone interview is etc etc.

Also what are your thoughts on HSBC private banking? Just out of curiosity. Would you say its on par with those of Barclays Wealth or other more established investment houses?
Thanks
-LM

My friend had a telephone interview for HSBC graduate programme (IBD). She was asked the following questions:

1. Why ibanking? (in your case, private banking)
2. Why HSBC?
3. Your exp in customer service
4. How do you deal with pressure?
5. a time when you had to meet a pressing deadline. how did you meet the deadline?
6. What did you like most about your past job? and why?
7. What didn't you like? and why?
8. How do you perform with little or no guidance?
9. How do you perform individually? as a team?
10. How do you deal with uncertainty?
etc...

I hope that helps.

Best,

Mark Stevens @ Cambridge

londonmonkey

Hey Mark,
Thanks man, that will be a great help. Did your friend pass? If so how did they find the assessment centre?

mark.stevens.ca...

Well, she isn't 100% sure whether she is selected for the assessment centre or not.

This is the response she received shortly after the telephone interview:

"Thank you for attending the recent first interview with us. We are delighted to confirm that you have been successful.

We will be conducting a final review of all successful candidates prior to the next stage of the selection process which is the Assessment Centre. The Assessment Centres will be running in November and December and we will advise you as soon as possible with further details.

We thank you in advance for your patience in this matter and your continued interest in HSBC.

Kind Regards
HSBC Graduate Recruitment Team"

However, her online application stage says "You have attended your interview and your application is under consideration."

What do you think? AC? or ding?

Best,

Mark Stevens @ Cambridge

londonmonkey

Im not sure, from what the e-mail says, it sounds like she passed the telephone interview which is great. I think what they mean by "conducting a review" is that they will examine her application along with the telephone interview results to decide if she should attend the AC.

Thats what I interpret the e-mail to say, especially considering that the application is under review.

grelanturn

Yeah I agree with Londonmonkey, I think she can assume that she is through to the AC - is everyone here applying for Global Markets? Have you all had your telephone interviews?

sim

Hi ,

I have a written test in HSBC on coming monday can anyone share there experience that what kind of questions i can expect. i was informed that it would b a test on financial accounting.

Thanks.

Millano

HI, Could someone provide me with the sorts of questions they ask in the HSBC telephone interview (Global markets).

Thanks very much.

Millano

??? there must be someone ?

robbyd88

I had the global markets interview on friday. Started with 'why hsbc?' and then 'why your chosen area?'. Then it was all competency based - nothing technical. Some questions were:

1. tell me a time you faced a challenging project and how did you face/overcome it
2. what is your greatest achievement to date
3. give me an example of a time when you worked in a team and explain your role within the team
4. what skills do you possess that make you suitable for the position

Thats all i can remember. Its all very structured and they will type as you talk so there are quite a few silent gaps. Mine took about 25mins in total and i got an acceptance email with half an hour. Hope that helps.

Millano

OK thank you a great deal. Can you rememeber how many questions there where roughly. I assume there was around 10 as you said it took 25 mins which is quite long.

thanks again.

robbyd88

in total there was about 8 or 9, but there is a gap between each question where they type which makes it longer than it should be, and there are some admin questions at the start. Also, 25mins isn't actually that long for a telephone interview

Millano

Alright cheers.

Just had my interview, I think it was horrible. I applied for Global Markets. They asked me questions like
1. Time you have worked in a collaborative environment
2 Why HSBC
3 Why investment banking
4 What research you've done on the industry and HSBC in particular
5 Time you ve persuaded someone
6 Time you had a task which ws completely new to you
7 Time you had a setback
8 Time you helped someone, what did you tell him
9 Time you ve taken a risk? Outcome
10 Time you discussed with someone and had a different opinion
11 Time you overcame a challenging situation

They said I will have an answer in a couple of days.

Good luck to all of you

McAlisteris

Had my interview on Executive Management programe, was quite long, about an hour. Question were like give example how you behaved...bla bla... Lady was nice, she was going deep into my answers, asking specific things from it. I did 8/10 i think. Not bad overall, so I am possitive, they said will come back within 5 days. FC :)

Blackquill

Hello! I just had a HSBC telephone interview for Customer Service (= call centre); what was not written in the job spec is that shifts can be between 8am to 10 pm, and the basic salary is 11700, plus bonuses if you meet targets (up to 15000 in this case). These are the first things they tell you, to see if you are still interested.
About the interview itself: at first they ask why you want to work for them, and why in that role. Then it's divided into 3 parts, and completely competency based, the last one of them focussing around following procedures, while the others were basically about customer service. They ask you to provide a situation in which you... sth. You should start describing the situation, then what happened, and the outcome, and they want a very specific situation; if you don't follow this scheme in telling them, they will ask specific questions (for example, they could ask, 'so, what was the outcome' if you didn't make it clear). Overall there were 3 main competency-based questions, one for each area, asking about an example of a situation, and then the rest of the questions were just to get the details out. The interviewer was friendly. I hope this can be helpful if you have an interview with them!

Hi, everybody~

I just had my HSBC telephone interview for Cashier position this morning~

Dont worry guys...they are just normal questions~ and the lady is really nice~

First, she confirmed my profile details...like tel no, etc.

Second, she told me more about the cashier position specification, and the salary range~

Then she asked me about the credit and criminal check questions which you have already updated the information in your online profile.

The main part of interviews is about the 3 main areas questions:

She asked:
Why HSBC? Why Cashier?
What do you know about HSBC?
How do you think about keeping a good relationship with customers?
How do you deal with customer complaints?
How do you handle with difficult persons?
How do you feel about work towards targets?
How do you feel the benefits you gain from HSBC?
What do you think the key points of cumstomer service?
What do you think about team spirits? to be a good team player?
Where do you think you will go in future with HSBC? (about ur ambition)

These are all I can remember now~ If I remember something else, will come to tell you guys.

After that, she confirmed my date of birth, 5 years addresses etc.

The whole interview took about 20 minutes and you can feel she tried to control the time limit~

Then she said will notify me the result within 2-3 business days by email.

Thats it.
Hope it can help you guys~
Cheers!
Good luck too!

Hi everyone!

I've applied for a summerinternship at the Strategic transaction group(STG) working with M&As and so on. I'm trying to prepare for a a competency based interview. Is there anyone who has been applying for these position before? In that case what did they ask you during the interview?

Thanks!

dynasty05

Blackquill, thanks for shedding some light on your interview. I have got a call centre interview with HSBC tomorrow, for Premier Banking Customer Representative, which I think should be very similar to the one u had. Can u be more specific about the exact questions asked? I was told the competency questions would border around the following areas:
> Treating customers fairly, listening, understanding, and delivering quality service.
> Delivering quality results
> Following procedures, taking ownership, and showing initiative.

One could imagine a million questions on these areas, but if u can remember the specific ones u were asked, that would be much help.

Also, have you received an outcome for your interview?

Thanks in expectation of your response.

foolishbot12

Did you get a reply in 2-3 days? How soon did you get a reply? I was told the same thing. I am worried that that 2-3 days bit is them basically saying u failed.

Cheers

The casher job in London,as far as I know,is £13,686 p.a.(without bonus)I have even seen an article about the average salary of casheir at HSBC,it's £12,500 p.a.So I suppose being a cashier at a HSBC retail bank would not make huge money. But how about the career path?
Why do you want to be a cashier at HSBC?
Do you have promotion within it?
What can you learn from being a cashier?
What is the next step for a cashier?
Or is it just becasue the job with HSBC,the big bank?
How long shoudl wait to be promoted?

I am confused here.If the position of cashier would not give you a proper career development, does it still worth to take becasue of basic supporting money? But it sounds really great to tell people you are working at HSBC.

I can't make up my mind. Can anyone help?

Castle82

I too have a telephone interview for a cashier position at HSBC next week, and was wondering if anyone had any tips or example questions? apparently they ask questions in which we have to 'think of situation where you..' which im not very good at thinking about on my feet lol. any help would be great and i will try to help anyone in return following my interview :) x

water

Hi Castle,

for which location u have been scheduled for cashier position

They are definitely going to asked the following question:-

Good Luck!!!!

bandbox666

Hi Everyone,

Today I just had my Interview for the post of 'Customer Service & Sales Representative '. It was supposed to take 30 minutes maximum. But for me it was 45 minutes. I literally flooded by back to back questions regarding my competency check. I did pretty well I believe. ....45 minutes for the interview!!! Guys, does it mean anything? I mean taking longer..is it good or bad?

Sue01

hey bandbox,

i think you should be fine if you took longer... i would only be concerned if you took less time...

i have my tel interview on monday for the inbound customer service position... just wondering what sort of questions they asked you? Would really appreciate it if you could let me know some of the questions

thank you

bandbox666

Hi Sue01

Thanks for your reply and shorta relieved frm your positive response towards my interview :) Well, the questions I've been asked..firstly some regular stuff...like your name..address..the questions u've been answered in online application form. Then the lady asked me..why I choose HSBC, why I choose bank. Then she asked about my experiences regarding customer service. Then she moved to competency based questions and advised me to give examples as well. Like..my role as team play. The example of good customer service..then some followup qustions abt the example I gave..like what you would do if your approach wasnt successfull. Then she asked me abt how I work with pressure. What my reaction to procedures. What is changes you might suggest to the administration if you have any dispute abt some procedures. Thats all I can recall now. Whilst you've been applied for customer service position I guess you might be asked the same types of questions. Anyway don't worry. Do some works. Prepare some example and some follow up questiones relating to those examples as well.

Best of luck. And wish for mine as well :)...cheers!!!

Sue01

hey bandbox,

thanks for that it was really useful i will prepare a few examples today... wish me luck and best of luck for you too... let me know how you got on :)

bandbox666

Hi Sue01
