Goldman Sachs - anyone heard back

18 October 2009 - 10:05pm

I applied to IBD in GS about three weeks ago, but have not heard anything back since. It just says they will get in touch should the appropriatejob come up.

Has anyone heard from them? Does anyone know their timetable for applications/interviews?

    Hi guys,

I've had 3 interviews with GS HK Compliance division so far. 2 hours after my 3rd interview last night, HR tried to contact me but I missed his call. Emailed back straight away and was asked to provide a time once business opens on Monday for him to give me a "quick call to provide an update on our status".

I'm not hoping much and am trying not to read too much into those words, but this is killing me! Anyone has any idea what does this mean? Does GS normally reject by email or phone?

    Thanks heaps!

    Got the job!
I don t have much advice (still sort of in shock that I was successful!). Thanks everyone for all the help, and I sincerely wish every one of you the best in all your future endeavors.
FYI my offer came one month after my final interview (so it is not necessarily the case that you will get a rejection if you are waiting more than 2 weeks)..

I applied to Goldman Sachs Singapore and HK Summer internship 2011 program. My application status is still in "Application Received" since the deadline Nov 28th. Does this mean good news or bad news ? :S
Do you think follow up is a good idea ?

Hey, I applied to GS SEC in London and have done 3 interviews so far, with 2 different desks. took 2 weeks to hear after first 2 interviews (on the same day) and had a third one last week tuesday. Anyone else interviewing for SEC London? it takes forever to hear back!

I am not really interested in an internship position. I am graduating next September, hopefully having a phd and I have no idea when is going to be a "suitable post" open... I hope they don't mean the intake 2012...

    • eric cartman

They still leave the position open post deadline but inform you later that you missed the deadline.

As far as I remember, they're not accommodating regarding shifting it from a grad role to summer but worth a try since you have 2 days. However given its a weekend, might be slightly late

It makes you wonder why the position was still open after the deadline, can't your application be transferred for an internship?

I got an email, one hour ago that I missed the deadline and they are going to let me know if a similar position opens in the future. They say that the deadline was on the 24th of October. Can anybody recall that date?? I think I applied around the 10th of Nov and the position was still open... :-S

    Hello guys,

This website has been very useful for my GS journey so I'd just like to give back.

For those having interviews, I would say that knowing your CV is the best advice I could give you, coz when they tell you that the interview is competency based, it's actually more like CV based. They did not make any references whatsoever to my cover letter (although it is perhaps essential in getting you through the initial screening process).

Both my first and final rounds were of similar format (i.e. CV based). Also know your Goldman news well! They actually asked me what have I read in the press regarding GS, but they didn't go into too much details. Definitely know why you want to work for them, and know the division you're applying for inside out (if possible mention how it differs from its competitors and hence why you find the differences attractive - so relate them to your motivations on why you want to work for them). Know also why you want to work in the division you're applying for.

I applied to technology and there was an analytical thinking exercise which I don't think I could elaborate here as it would be disrespectful to their recruitment process. But it wasn't technical and it only tested your analytical thinking. I thought I screwed this up but managed to pass it somehow.

If it seems that they've run out of questions during the interview, do not worry! This happened quite a lot during my interviews. But as soon as one ran out of question, the other interviewer would ask you another one. As I said the interview is very much based on your CV so they just picked things that interest them from your CV. Be prepared to be drilled on them!

The good thing about interviews at GS is they're normally conducted by 2 people, so you're not the main focus and sometime they would talk to each other. Also they all are very friendly but remember that it is an interview so you want to come across as professional.

I'm not too sure how I did cause I was offered the job after more than two weeks from the final interviews date. So it seemed that they probably put me in some sort of waiting list while waiting for their first choice candidates to respond to their offers. But anyhow, I got it in the end :), and hope this really helps some of you going for the interviews.

@cheerioz, it is a graduate position. and you can reapply.

@eric - I first had to demonstrate my skills in the application to ensure that I made it through to the interview stage. Then during all the interviews it was essential that I demonstrated my skills! they ask questions based on what is in my CV so I had to show that my work experience & extracurricular activities have equipped me with the skills that will enable me to do well in the role that I applied for.
Even if you dont have relevant experience its likely that whatever you have has given you vital skills like teamwork, leadership & communication skills that will help you to succeed in the role you have applied for.You have to be able to demonstrate this so that you dont lose out to someone who has more relevant experience that you.

    hey guys,

They informed me that I will scheduled a 2nd round interview from 11nov-17th nov and said i should receive a response within 2 weeks of the interview process. But i got my interview on 12nov. Till then, I yet to receive any response from them :(

i'm just wondering which date should reference the 2 weeks - 12th nov or 17th nov? And anyone received any offers already?

I'm applying for sg tech division btw.

  • 27 November 2010 - 7:29pm
    • eric cartman

    @ niao

When you mean you demonstrated the skills - do you mean in the interview stage or application.
I was in the AC last year for summer internships and was told that they would love to have me back after gaining experience which I did with a bulge bracket IB this summer. Going for internships again and really hope I get it this time around.

I will be applying for 2 divisions and need to fit in skills and interest within 300 words.. FML

Don't read into that too much. Honestly, the fact that you haven't been rejected is good. I got mine within 3 days of the AC. I would wait patiently and hope for the best.

Thanks for sharing! Is this for a graduate position? I remember one of the requirements was to graduate this yr when I applied so I'm not sure if I'm eligible to reapply again next year. Anyways, best of luck with your new job! Congratulations again!

  • 26 November 2010 - 4:55pm
    • niao

@ cheerioz It was my CV and Covering Letter presentation& content that changed. I didn't reach the interview stage the previous two times I applied - I just got rejected!
I dont have relevant work experience as such, but the experience I do have has equipped me with they type of skills that GS look for so I really demonstrated this in my application.

    HI All
I am probly overthinking this but.... I just got an email from GIR saying sorry for the delay and that they would contact me next week, probably by email, with an answer.
Is it the case that rejections get emails, and successes get phone calls, and this is an indirect way of saying i am in the firing line, or am I being para.....

    • cheerioz

Congrats Niao! Would you mind sharing what the differences were between your application this year and previous years'? Did you earn more relevant work experience or was it mostly your interview skills and CV presentation?

    Hi Guys!

I would just like to tell you about me application experience with GS. I applied for the Legal Analyst position

My first round interview was based on my cv except the following questions:
    1) Where do you see yourself in five years time
    2)Why Goldman Sachs?

I then got a call the following day inviting me for the second round.

My second round consisted of three interviews. Again they were based on my CV except for the following:
    1) How do you keep up to date with the news
    2) Why should we pick you
3)where do you see yourself on 10 years time
4)Why did you go to the Uni that you did
    5) What deals are you aware of that we have done
    6) Do you know what business area you will be working in
7)What appeals to you about GS
    8) you don't have finance experience, how will you cope with the role?

I got a call the next day to tell me I was successful. I start July next year.

Guys I also want to say that I applied in 2008 and 2009 and got rejected outright! So if that is the story of any of you guys, dont be discouraged - just take another look at you CV and covering letter and if possible go along to career events and get a professional to look at it for you, ideally someone who works in an investment bank. It may need re-doing as mine did!

Also I did not go to Oxbridge, UCL, KCL, LSE or Imperial!
