I feel obligated to post my experience after learning a lot from this thread, even though I am in the States. Just finished my phone interview for a graduate role. Interviewer said only A and R are evaluated, C is partly based on my online assessment, so no topic discussion.
The questions I got are:
Time when you had to change your approach in achieving a goal
Time when you have to be respectful and listen to others opinion (paraphrased a bit)
Time when you have to make a timely decision
Time when you have to discipline yourself in order to achieve a goal you set
Time when you had to build a relationship with someone you don't know and achieve a goal
Time when you have to be sensitive about others' belief, culture / background
There could be one more that I don't remember , lasted a little over an hour
Yes there are also why energy industry, shell, what is your career plan, why do you think you are right for this role type of questions. Then you get to ask as well .
I feel like the interviewer did not interact too much. Didn't probe a lot as other people mentioned. Which is a contrast to a previous Shell interviewer I had before, who was so nice to kind of conclude what you said that you feel better about your answers. That was a few yrs ago.

I've just had my interview for Graduate Program at Shell Netherlands.
It was a long one - around 1,5 h.
There were 3 parts:
1. Behavioral interview (give me an example of the time when you ....). Be prepared to answer questions about Capacity, Achievement, Relationship.
2. Why oil company? Why Shell? What would you like to do with us?
3. My questions.
My interview did NOT include a part where you have to choose a topic to talk about.
To all of those who went through the interview - how long did you have to wait for the results?
this thread has been really helpful and I had my telephone interview today for Shell for a non technical role,
the lady who interviewed me was extremely lovely, she put me at ease straight away and explained everything fully, therefore it was very conversational
the first part of the interview was based on achievements that put me out of my comfort zone, I was asked
"name me a time that you had to change your approach in order to reach a goal"
"name a time when you had to plan something and see it to the end" (this is paraphrased as I can not remember the exact question"
the next topic was relationships, I was asked
"name a time when you had to build a relationship with someone that you did not know in order to achieve a goal"
"name a time when you had to be convinced of something that you did not agree with, what did you learn"
I think there may have been a few other questions but remember you need to know your examples inside out as they probe
also there was no capacity...
The final part of the interview revolved around
"why you want to work for and energy company"
"why you want to work for shell"
"what have you done in order to research shell"
"what you can bring to the table"
"what are your long term career goals"
then there was time to ask her questions about the job
she also spent a lot of time talking about what shell expects and what working for shell entails, it was a really positive experience so do not worry,
i was told i would find out in 10 working days or before if i have got through to the next stage,
so fingers crossed!

I just had my telephone interview with shell and it was slightly different to what everyone else had gone through.
The whole interview was about the competencies. They asked me 6 different questions which i really wasnt prepared for and they wanted new examples for each one. So be prepared with atleast 6 different examples that you can use.
The questions that i can remember were:
1. Biggest Achievement
2. Tell a time when you had to be sensitive towards someone approach
3. A time when you had to work with different people from different backgrounds and cultures
4. A time when there were different opinions and how you influenced others to get your point across
5. Example of a time you encountered a problem and how you solved it
and another one that i cant remember sorry,
And they ask a lot of follow up questions just to see if you know what you are talking abt so be ready...

Hope you are well. So how did your assessment centre go? My friend applied last year and it was different to what you mentioned (as you say they must have changed it!). I have a telephone interview cple week which I am going to revise for next week - is it the same 4 topics (CSR, recruitment, diversity etc)?
So what discipline did u apply for and did you get the red/green light? I am UK too.
What kind of stuff where each of the topics on (all current threads are on the old stuff so would be good for you to lead on the new stuff for 2013 and future if you kindly spare the time).
I would like to know more about the E-tray (never experience one before)
Also the self-reflection and stuff interview lol ... is the group task and case study about that Aduki island and community investment?

Not done much prep yet but will set a few days aside next week at some point, I have notes from previous interviews which can be used regarding competencies, so just this capacity section which will be quite tricky!
I am UK so will be London/Aberdeen/Netherlands I believe IF I was to be successful! lol
Great. Yours in all likelihood will be before mine because I have an email saying I'll be notified of a date. I am applying for a technical role - HSSE & SP. I haven't prepared as yet myself but have been through this thread so that's a start I guess. The capacity bit could be tricky but I'd recommend having a clear structure in your head before beginning to answer - everything should fall in place hopefully. Any heads up will be greatly appreciated and I'll do the same if somehow my interview came before yours.
I had my telephone interview for UK yesterday - I gave good responses (she did however tell me to speak slower!) ha.
I would say to remain on the exact topic as its quite easy to wonder off it slightly lol
It was on biggest achievement, worked in team, and changed my approach to solve problem - asked me how I could have done it differently, and why the approach I done was important. Nothing on capacity this year. I will find out within 10days, interview lasted 45mins.
I will keep you posted on progress, and if you could provide tips for SRD if I was to progress, that would be appreciated to enable me to best prepare.

Hello doncappon09, congratulations on ur progress to the srd. Please i will like to know how long it was between the day u had ur telephone interview and when u received notification for the srd. I had my telephone interview for a commercial role (i.e. IT) on the 8th of May, and i am still awaiting a reply.
I noticed this thread has gone a bit quiet but I am certain there is someone out there who's recently attended a SRD (London/ Hague/Aberdeen) who can provide some valuable information.
I have been invited for a SRD in London next month (commercial midstream/ upstream) and the briefing pack says the SRD comprises of 5 exercises
1) An electronic E-tray exercise with two tasks to complete: an online exercise and a written task;
2) Self-reflection interview;
3) Group exercise
4) Case study analysis
5) A final interview
This seems to be a new approach considering it used to be 3 exercises till December 2012. Can anyone highlight if this is a change or it still the same task but expanded? Hints on each aspect of the SRD would be very much appreciated.

I applied online for Egypt 1 month and a half ago, then I passed the online assessments....almost 2 weeks ago, I checked my application online, and I found out the the HR status changed from "application under review" to "pending interview"...I asked them why it's been long time and I haven't got an invitation for a phone interview, they told me there are some problems they are facing in securing interview dates and they will let me know after they finalize the schedules. Does anyone have any idea how long they take to invite for a phone interview? Do you think they are gonna hold SRD this year?
I applied for a technical offshore position online, I received a call from a lady (think from HR) without any prior warning. She asked me
1) Why i applied to shell
2) What i do in my current role
3) Why/Reason i am leaving my current job
4) Expected and Current Salary
5) Availability and Preference of shifts.
This interview seemed quite informal, i then received a E-mail 3 days later- Invitation shell final assessment " you have been invited to a shell structured interview, this is the final selection stage of our recruitment process." This is a telephone interview.
Has anyone else had this process? If so was the final assessment interview based on the previous posts that people have posted?

hey guys, I had my SRD recently and it was a GREAT experience. I didn't get the job though...
My advice.... make sure you get your CART together... and be yourself at all time...
The guys at Shell are awesome and the accessors will do everything to make you comfortable...

Just had my telephone interview for a Well Engineering Grad role today. Made alot easier with the information I found on here. So thought it would be good to give a recent update on what I went through today.
About location preference.
About start date preference.
About job / position preference.
About my biggest achievement, the respective challenges and how I overcame them
About a time where I had a disagreement within a team, how did I resolve it
About a time when I worked in a contrasting group of people
My responses to the above followed the STAR response model (situation, task, action you took and results). Additionally, to all of the above have an idea / an answer to how you can improve on whatever situation you went through, i.e. what would you do better next time. (Also be mindful of the Shell C.A.R.T. technique)
The final part was indeed a discussion, I had to choose one from four topicss including:
# Developing diversity within a business
#Working with Local Governments
#Importance of recruiting and retaining high calibre staff.
I was asked to discuss as if I was running a business and how I would incorporate it into the business along with its worth and importance if necessary.
Finally I was asked how I think this would change in the next 10years.
Then I had 5 mins to ask questions.
It was just over an hour all in. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Hi guys, just had my phone interview for HR Graduate, less than 1h ago and I told myself that I will post to help others be prepared. Here's my experience:
It was split in four parts:
A couple of general questions about your career preference, why, location preferences, if you are authorized to work in the countries of your preference and what is your preferred start date.
Part II - Competency Based Questions
The main questions were followed by a variety of probing questions aimed at finding out specific things you did in certain recent situations. The questions tried to capture the usual STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or CAR (Context Action Result). Followed by "what would you do differently?" and "what did you learn?" ( asked after all your examples).
- Biggest achievement
- Teamwork situation where there were different opinions and how did you worked together to solve it.
- Team work situation when you encountered a problem and how did you solved it.
Part III - Capacity
You are the decision maker for a large corporation, not necessarily Shell. Given 3 topics: select one and talk on it
- A strategy for Implementing Diversity and Inclusiveness
- Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
- I don't remember the 3rd bcs, as soon as I heard the 1st one I decided to talk on it
The recruiter asked me to define the topic and talk about what is its impact on the organization and what are the actions to take to implement it; To give positive and negative examples of diversity; who are the stakeholders that will benefit from the implementation, who might oppose and say "no" my strategy of implementing diversity and inclusiveness and why would they say "no"; how do I convince them to say "yes"

i have been given the choice to either go for a phone interview or face to face but i m confused which one i shud pick :s any help which one i should go for will be extremely helpful..
I would suggest you to choose the telephone interview, as it will save more time for you and allow you to answer the questions in a more comfortable environment. Best luck for your applications.

thanks a lot for these posts they really helped. If you want to know what happened in my phone interview it was word for word the same thing squatly had (see the post on 28th September) so the chances are that will be the format.
Prepare well would be my main tip, especially look at RISK FACTORS if you answer the Meeting Global Energy Demand while paying attention to the environment topic. The 2011 Annual Report has these well spelled out.
Anyone got tips for the SRD?

Still yet to hear from them about SRD
It means that you have passed the initial stage, which is the telephone interview, and now you are being considered for a job. So you are in the process, but it is neither positive nor negative - you are being considered.
For me, I got the same email and they have invited me to attend a future SRD in 2013.
