Hi People...I am very new to Wiki Jobs. Pls I need to know if anyone has any info about Shell Telephone Interview. What am I supposed to prepare for, types of questions, what should I look out for? Got one this coming Monday.Pls help!!!Thanxxx
Hi.I applied for trading graduate program in November 2014 and my application is still under review. Is anybody in similar position? Until when they should invite us for interview for September 2015 intake?
Has anybody had their phone interview with Shell recently?
Do they no longer ask about capacity?
Do they always begin the interview asking about your biggest achievement?
Mine is in a week!
I have a telephone interview with Shell in a couple of days. Any advice or feedback please ? :) Thank you in advance :)
I've just had my interview for Graduate Program at Shell Netherlands.
It was a long one - around 1,5 h.
There were 3 parts:
1. Behavioral interview (give me an example of the time when you ....). Be prepared to answer questions about Capacity, Achievement, Relationship.
2. Why oil company? Why Shell? What would you like to do with us?
3. My questions.
My interview did NOT include a part where you have to choose a topic to talk about.
To all of those who went through the interview - how long did you have to wait for the results?
this thread has been really helpful and I had my telephone interview today for Shell for a non technical role,
the lady who interviewed me was extremely lovely, she put me at ease straight away and explained everything fully, therefore it was very conversational
the first part of the interview was based on achievements that put me out of my comfort zone, I was asked
"name me a time that you had to change your approach in order to reach a goal"
"name a time when you had to plan something and see it to the end" (this is paraphrased as I can not remember the exact question"
the next topic was relationships, I was asked
"name a time when you had to build a relationship with someone that you did not know in order to achieve a goal"
"name a time when you had to be convinced of something that you did not agree with, what did you learn"
I think there may have been a few other questions but remember you need to know your examples inside out as they probe
also there was no capacity...
The final part of the interview revolved around
"why you want to work for and energy company"
"why you want to work for shell"
"what have you done in order to research shell"
"what you can bring to the table"
"what are your long term career goals"
then there was time to ask her questions about the job
she also spent a lot of time talking about what shell expects and what working for shell entails, it was a really positive experience so do not worry,
i was told i would find out in 10 working days or before if i have got through to the next stage,
so fingers crossed!
just be yourself and be positive
I just had my telephone interview with shell and it was slightly different to what everyone else had gone through.
The whole interview was about the competencies. They asked me 6 different questions which i really wasnt prepared for and they wanted new examples for each one. So be prepared with atleast 6 different examples that you can use.
The questions that i can remember were:
1. Biggest Achievement
2. Tell a time when you had to be sensitive towards someone approach
3. A time when you had to work with different people from different backgrounds and cultures
4. A time when there were different opinions and how you influenced others to get your point across
5. Example of a time you encountered a problem and how you solved it
and another one that i cant remember sorry,
And they ask a lot of follow up questions just to see if you know what you are talking abt so be ready...
Hope you guys have better luck than i did
Hi Mech.Eng - Just typed a full on message there and it got deleted! arhh ... quick answer is no but I told them to be quick as I got job elsewhere for drilling contractor - will let u you know as soon as I do
Wish you a good luck...and I have the same here, I got no response until now :D
Anyone booked in for the SRD coming up in London (June). Would be good to share ideas, i'll appreciate it if you can Inbox me.
Good Evening Don,
Hope you are well. So how did your assessment centre go? My friend applied last year and it was different to what you mentioned (as you say they must have changed it!). I have a telephone interview cple week which I am going to revise for next week - is it the same 4 topics (CSR, recruitment, diversity etc)?
So what discipline did u apply for and did you get the red/green light? I am UK too.
What kind of stuff where each of the topics on (all current threads are on the old stuff so would be good for you to lead on the new stuff for 2013 and future if you kindly spare the time).
I would like to know more about the E-tray (never experience one before)
Also the self-reflection and stuff interview lol ... is the group task and case study about that Aduki island and community investment?
Your career support would be much appreciated,
or shot us a threat back on here when you get time.
I have an interview coming up as well. If we both go through, we might have the same assessment centre, assuming you're in London as well.
Cool, well Good luck! - What position you applying for?
When is your phone interview? If mine is before you I'll give you a heads up...
Not done much prep yet but will set a few days aside next week at some point, I have notes from previous interviews which can be used regarding competencies, so just this capacity section which will be quite tricky!
I am UK so will be London/Aberdeen/Netherlands I believe IF I was to be successful! lol
Great. Yours in all likelihood will be before mine because I have an email saying I'll be notified of a date. I am applying for a technical role - HSSE & SP. I haven't prepared as yet myself but have been through this thread so that's a start I guess. The capacity bit could be tricky but I'd recommend having a clear structure in your head before beginning to answer - everything should fall in place hopefully. Any heads up will be greatly appreciated and I'll do the same if somehow my interview came before yours.
I had my telephone interview for UK yesterday - I gave good responses (she did however tell me to speak slower!) ha.
I would say to remain on the exact topic as its quite easy to wonder off it slightly lol
It was on biggest achievement, worked in team, and changed my approach to solve problem - asked me how I could have done it differently, and why the approach I done was important. Nothing on capacity this year. I will find out within 10days, interview lasted 45mins.
I will keep you posted on progress, and if you could provide tips for SRD if I was to progress, that would be appreciated to enable me to best prepare.
Enjoy your weekend and good luck!
Hello doncappon09, congratulations on ur progress to the srd. Please i will like to know how long it was between the day u had ur telephone interview and when u received notification for the srd. I had my telephone interview for a commercial role (i.e. IT) on the 8th of May, and i am still awaiting a reply.
I noticed this thread has gone a bit quiet but I am certain there is someone out there who's recently attended a SRD (London/ Hague/Aberdeen) who can provide some valuable information.
I have been invited for a SRD in London next month (commercial midstream/ upstream) and the briefing pack says the SRD comprises of 5 exercises
1) An electronic E-tray exercise with two tasks to complete: an online exercise and a written task;
2) Self-reflection interview;
3) Group exercise
4) Case study analysis
5) A final interview
This seems to be a new approach considering it used to be 3 exercises till December 2012. Can anyone highlight if this is a change or it still the same task but expanded? Hints on each aspect of the SRD would be very much appreciated.
Look forward to your comments
Well done for getting invited for SRD. Can you please elaborate on your telephone interview because I have mine coming up next week and it seems you had yours quite recently too.
Appreciate your help
I applied online for Egypt 1 month and a half ago, then I passed the online assessments....almost 2 weeks ago, I checked my application online, and I found out the the HR status changed from "application under review" to "pending interview"...I asked them why it's been long time and I haven't got an invitation for a phone interview, they told me there are some problems they are facing in securing interview dates and they will let me know after they finalize the schedules. Does anyone have any idea how long they take to invite for a phone interview? Do you think they are gonna hold SRD this year?
I applied for a technical offshore position online, I received a call from a lady (think from HR) without any prior warning. She asked me
1) Why i applied to shell
2) What i do in my current role
3) Why/Reason i am leaving my current job
4) Expected and Current Salary
5) Availability and Preference of shifts.
This interview seemed quite informal, i then received a E-mail 3 days later- Invitation shell final assessment " you have been invited to a shell structured interview, this is the final selection stage of our recruitment process." This is a telephone interview.
Has anyone else had this process? If so was the final assessment interview based on the previous posts that people have posted?

I hope this helps.... Good Luck guys
hey guys, I had my SRD recently and it was a GREAT experience. I didn't get the job though...
My advice.... make sure you get your CART together... and be yourself at all time...
The guys at Shell are awesome and the accessors will do everything to make you comfortable...
here are some information I found on the net that gave me an idea of what the SRD would be like... and its exactly what you will encounter:
Ive had the exact same stuff as Rich.
Would be really good if someone could shed some light on their SRD experience :)
Hi Guys & Girls,
Just had my telephone interview for a Well Engineering Grad role today. Made alot easier with the information I found on here. So thought it would be good to give a recent update on what I went through today.
About location preference.
About start date preference.
About job / position preference.
About my biggest achievement, the respective challenges and how I overcame them
About a time where I had a disagreement within a team, how did I resolve it
About a time when I worked in a contrasting group of people
My responses to the above followed the STAR response model (situation, task, action you took and results). Additionally, to all of the above have an idea / an answer to how you can improve on whatever situation you went through, i.e. what would you do better next time. (Also be mindful of the Shell C.A.R.T. technique)
The final part was indeed a discussion, I had to choose one from four topicss including:
# Developing diversity within a business
#Working with Local Governments
#Importance of recruiting and retaining high calibre staff.
I was asked to discuss as if I was running a business and how I would incorporate it into the business along with its worth and importance if necessary.
Finally I was asked how I think this would change in the next 10years.
Then I had 5 mins to ask questions.
It was just over an hour all in. Hope this helps. Good Luck
Has anybody had a telephone interview for a technical summer internship? I have mine very soon and would really appreciate some examples of the topics they are asking recently, they seem to change slightly every year.
Please and thank you! :)
Hey Jacky! Have you been invited to a SRD yet ? I'm still waiting for a date to appear after passing the telephone interview!
Hi, just finished my SRD yesterday, and now waiting for the result. Will share my experience if the outcome is positive, finger crossed;)
Hi guys, just had my phone interview for HR Graduate, less than 1h ago and I told myself that I will post to help others be prepared. Here's my experience:
It was split in four parts:
A couple of general questions about your career preference, why, location preferences, if you are authorized to work in the countries of your preference and what is your preferred start date.
Part II - Competency Based Questions
The main questions were followed by a variety of probing questions aimed at finding out specific things you did in certain recent situations. The questions tried to capture the usual STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or CAR (Context Action Result). Followed by "what would you do differently?" and "what did you learn?" ( asked after all your examples).
- Biggest achievement
- Teamwork situation where there were different opinions and how did you worked together to solve it.
- Team work situation when you encountered a problem and how did you solved it.
Part III - Capacity
You are the decision maker for a large corporation, not necessarily Shell. Given 3 topics: select one and talk on it
- A strategy for Implementing Diversity and Inclusiveness
- Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
- I don't remember the 3rd bcs, as soon as I heard the 1st one I decided to talk on it
The recruiter asked me to define the topic and talk about what is its impact on the organization and what are the actions to take to implement it; To give positive and negative examples of diversity; who are the stakeholders that will benefit from the implementation, who might oppose and say "no" my strategy of implementing diversity and inclusiveness and why would they say "no"; how do I convince them to say "yes"
-Questions for the interviewer
Hope that this helps and Good Luck to all!!
i wanted to ask, maybe you have prepared info for the interview and could share something with me? i am doing that right now by myself, but i feel a bit lost within all these topics from capacity sector. i would really appreciate any help, as i have few days left till my interview.
looking forward to your answer :)
Have you done the Phone Interview? please let me know how has it gone.
Thank you :)
Has anyone had a telephone interview recently? Has the four topics been changed? Any new ones?
Would really appreciate any help!
Hi, I just posted my experience
i am going to srd in hagure this month. anyone else is?
How was your SRD? Any helpful tips please?
Anyone attended or been invited to a SRD in the last month (commercial roles)? Kindly share your experience, I am sure it would be really helpful to everyone.
I would say the same. Telephone interview is better as you can have notes for help as well.
any suggestions please!
i have been given the choice to either go for a phone interview or face to face but i m confused which one i shud pick :s any help which one i should go for will be extremely helpful..
I would suggest you to choose the telephone interview, as it will save more time for you and allow you to answer the questions in a more comfortable environment. Best luck for your applications.
Ok thanks @JackyZhang10
Anyone been to SRD in Netherlands lately?
thanks a lot for these posts they really helped. If you want to know what happened in my phone interview it was word for word the same thing squatly had (see the post on 28th September) so the chances are that will be the format.
Prepare well would be my main tip, especially look at RISK FACTORS if you answer the Meeting Global Energy Demand while paying attention to the environment topic. The 2011 Annual Report has these well spelled out.
Anyone got tips for the SRD?
Was just wondering how long it took you to get the invite to SRD, I applied for a C&P role and had my interview in early Nov. and i got this email two days after ;
'Thank you for your interest in pursuing a career with Shell and for taking part in your recent interview.
We are now reviewing your qualifications and areas of interest against available employment opportunities. Your application is being given every consideration, so please be assured that we will contact you once a decision has been made.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Once again, thank you for your interest in Shell'
Still yet to hear from them about SRD
It means that you have passed the initial stage, which is the telephone interview, and now you are being considered for a job. So you are in the process, but it is neither positive nor negative - you are being considered.
For me, I got the same email and they have invited me to attend a future SRD in 2013.
All the best
Has anyone been to SRD recently? Please share your experience and what type of questions they ask in case stdies?
I have forgotton what position i hose when i appled. I know i applied for commercial stream but not sure if it was IT in it or something else as i have multiple skills.
Anyone know how i can find out what i applied for?
Thanks Guys! This thread is very helpful with tips, suggestions and past experiences.
I just had my telephonic round and waiting for SRD, it's a technical role though.
My telephinic round was straight forward:
1. CV Based - My previoius work experience and key responsibilities I handled
2. My career aspirations for the next five years
3. What do you know about Shell
4. About the Job Description I applied for, and why do you think you are right fit for it?
5. Questions to ask to interviwer
As per my past experience with other consulting firms, Interview process & questions will differ for "Graduate Hiring" and "Experienced Hiring".
I have attended xxx consulting firm's Assessment day as an Experienced Hire in the past, It was a combination of 4 rounds. 1. Technical Interview 2. Management Case Study (include Case Study, Group Discussion & Presentation) 3. Partner Round & 4 HR discussion. I have no clue about SRD and Shell Final Assessment, hoping for the best. Fingers crossed. Thanks again to all of you for your valuable tips.
Will post you with the questions at SRD once it is done. Cheers
congrats Zodiac-ys. please do share information about SRD whe u are done. is your SRD in december or next year?
I'm scheduled for january 2013. technical rile as well. the SRD will be in Netherlands.
Hey guys, anyone going for SRD in december? Just made it through to SRD... pffff!
For those who have attended the SRD, please share experience and information especially for technical roles...
Congratulations. I am through to SRD as well, but they told me the earlist SRD will be scheduled in Jan, so I dont think anyone will attend a SRD in Dec. Good luck.
@Jackyzhang10... thanks! Congrats too... did u apply for a technical role? Well I was invited to December 5th SRD, but I asked them to change it as I have an important exam that same day, so the new date will be communicated to me soon.... it will probably be in January I guess... do you know of anyone who has been to the SRD lately?
No, I applied for a commercial role, maybe that's why they told me there is no available SRD for me in 2012. Anyway, best of lucks for you application.
Just had my phone interview for the Well engineering position... the lady seemed to attack from all angles! I don't feel too satisfied, but lets see what the outcome will be...
same questions asked:
1) Balancing Global standardisation with local leads
2) Meeting Global energy needs whilst paying respect to the environment
3) Recruiting and Retraining high calibre staff
4) Keeping up with market innovation and technology.
I applied for UK Trading... and I got sent a rejection email... ah well!
Good luck to you!
I think you are rejected only because this role is closed for applications. Best luck for your future career:)
That's an optimistic way of looking at it haha - thanks for the comment though! You too, all the best with the SRD - i have to make sure I nail my next few interviews! haha
Just got this!
Thank you for your interest in pursuing a career with Shell and for taking part in your recent interview.
Once again, thank you for your interest in Shell.
What does this mean?
I got the same email on the same date as you at about 3.35 haha.
Did you get invited for SRD yet? I have not heard from them too.
Lets update each other :)
I think it means that you have passed the initial stage, which is the telephone interview, and now you are being considered for a job. So you are in the process, but it is neither positive nor negative - you are being considered.
I think you did not apply for an europe role, as I have seen that the application of trading role are all closed in europe.
Anyway, good luck on your application
stiilll waiting lol...
had an interview for Shell Finance on the 6th November. Still waiting for a reply. The information provided on this forum helped alot in my preparation. Thank you to all who has contributed.
I had my interview on the 5th, last Monday - still waiting to hear back - just wanted to thank everyone for the information they shared - was very helpful!
I interviewed for Shell Trading by the way.
Thank you all for all the comments, REALLY helpful. I have reviewed all the comments and these are all the "capacity" options I have noted:
-Diversity and Inclusivenes
-Helping Local Governements
-Recruiting and Retraining high calibre staff
-Business Competitors Leadership Development Programmes
-Diversity and Inclusivenes
-Balancing Global standardisation with local leads
-Meeting Global energy needs whilst paying respect to the environment
-Implementing Health, Safety, Security and Environmental controls
-Keeping up with market innovation and technology
I'm applying for a technical internship, is there any other topics that could crop up ?
Thanks for your time
six days after my telephonici nterview they told me that i did not progress to the next stage. They sent me mails every alternate day before this tele interview. Also i was rudely shocked as i did the interview extremely well as it was very general and nothing technical at all. All according to the lines in the forum. The interview call came only after anxious waiting for more than 30 mins and when i tried to contact the number in the e mail it was going on Voice mail. Then the call me and a hurried interview took place which was not at all interactive as she appeared to be a HR lady and i could hear her typing out my responses. It was very boring and she appeared robotic , though the questions were mostly anticipated only. After this shock i mailed to the HR telling about the detlayed, non technical interview and asking for feedback , i did not get any reply. Well, this telephone interview with Shell for a technical role sucks and iam not at all happy with this format of an HR interview for a technical Role. Something more sensible has to be done about it.
i will be taking my telephone interview in about 30 mins from now. Little nervous though.
I am applying in Netherlands. English fluency is not really the point that they are looking in you, as long as they can understand your answer, I suppose
Anybody else who already took part in the Shell Recruitment Day, can you please tell us about your experiences
I had my telephone interview on Monday 1st of October and the content were exactly the same as squatly had described. 6 days after that I received and email
"Thank you for your interest in pursuing a career with Shell and for taking part in your recent interview.
We are now reviewing your qualifications and areas of interest against available employment opportunities. Your application is being given every consideration, so please be assured that we will contact you once a decision has been made"
I am really nervous but let's hope everything's gonna be OK.
nlr3169: I had the same thing, after the application I forgot my second choice but they will ask only the choice you made in broad sense, i.e. for me is products&processes research so don't worry.
For the preparation you should pay attention to competency questions and the part where you have to choose from 4 topics to discuss.
1. For the competency questions: Please be honest, try to take an examples that DID happen and try to tell them in DETAILS, for e.g. How? With what? What is the role of?
2. For the 4 topics part: Think BROAD and be LOGICAL, look on Google for examples.
Could you please tell me if you applied for a technical role and what questions did they ask you, especially the topic in Capacity bit
thanks alot of the help in advance
Would you please tell me if they invite you to a SRD after you receive this email?
"Thank you for your interest in pursuing a career with Shell and for taking part in your recent interview. We are now reviewing your qualifications and areas of interest against available employment opportunities. Your application is being given every consideration, so please be assured that we will contact you once a decision has been made"
Thank you very much
@ subasa83.Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I wish u all the best. By the way did u apply for a Singapore position.? Are they very particular about english fluency during the interview? we will keep each other posted till the time we can.
Well, responsetime in my case only 2 days... unfortunately i did not get hired. Can anyone tell me if there is a possibility to get feedback on a telephone interview? I'd like to know what to change next time, because I had the feeling I did pretty good
Oh, unlucky Jobbloggs01! Still, you gained some very valuable experience for future interviews and applications!
I still havn't heard back from mine...
I assume you got an email after the interview saying soemthing along the lines of:
"Thank you for your interest in pursuing a career with Shell and for taking part in your recent interview.
We are now reviewing your qualifications and areas of interest against available employment opportunities. Your application is being given every consideration, so please be assured that we will contact you once a decision has been made."
Maybe you could reply to that email asking for feedback!
I think you are one step further, because i did not get that email! I only got the one saying i was unfortunately not offered a blabla. Si I think you might get a job!
Hmm... I got that email Monday evening after my interview the prior Friday morning...
I'm not going to get my hopes up just yet, but here's hoping I get through to the SRD!
I did my telephone interview on 19th Oct and received a same email today.
Did they invite you to a SRD? What position and country you are applying to?
All the best;)
HEY GUYS! i have a telephone interview with shell on 12th oct for singapore position and a Technical Role! It seems from this forum it is going to be tough! As some wrote here i did not save a copy of my application and i do not remember my second choice. I think it was drilling engineering! Urgent help needed for a good preparation. Any forum where i can get the answers to the situation/motivation based questions. Thanks in Advance.
I did the telephone interview on monday the 1st october and had exactly the same questions as squatly. Every topic was also the same. With me it took 1 hour and 15 minutes. I had only time for 1 question left so I think I talked a little bit too much in the last section.
Some tips that I can add:
- prepare basic interview questions at the kent website : google kent and interview questions
- Make sure you know your stuff in detail, as the interviewer will narrow down to see if you know what you are saying.
- Write some questions and for example strengths / weaknesses in a word file and keep that on your screen during the interview. It is very convenient ;)
And also the reply time was about 2 weeks she said.
I just had a phone interview for the graduate programme. My first choice was Commercial Midstream/Upstream and my second choice was Technical Geology/Geophysics.
The telephone interview format was this:
The interviewer introduces himself stating his background and position at Shell (not from HR, but a technical/commercial role).
They then go on to confirm what you have written on your online application form - what your choices are, when you graduate, work location/type preferences etc.
Then its onto 3 competency question groups.
1) Example when I have had to work hard to achieve a goal
2) Example of a time when I have had to work in a group and faced differences with another member
3) Example of when I have engaged with different groups/cultures and my success depended on it.
The interviewer will ask relevant question for each of these question groups (for my there were between 5-10 questions for each group), and each lasted between 10-15 mins.
Then, I was told to think from a point of view of being the decision maker of a large multinational corporation (Doesnt have to be Shell, just a general business).
I was given a choice of four topics to chose from:
1) Balancing Global standardisation with local leads
2) Meeting Global energy needs whilst paying respect to the environment
3) Implementing Health, Safety, Security and Environmental controls
4) Keeping up with market innovation and technology.
This was by far the most difficult section. You have to think of pretty much everything a large multinational company will have to deal with. The interviewer will prompt you with questions, but remember to think of the broader subject rather than individual points. And like I said, you have to think of all eventualities really... I think I may have found this harder as I have never had a business background through my studies, but rather science. In hindsight it may have been better to choose a different topic!
At the end of the interview, you have the opportunity to ask them questions. Do it! I cheekily asked how he thought the interview went, but its obvious they cannot divulge any information, as he just sidestepped the question.
The whole thing lasted about 1 hour 5 minutes, and I was called promptly at the time I had scheduled the interview.
They say they will get back within 7-10 working days.
Hi, just wondering for how long is the telephone interview usually ??
hey everyone, just had my phone interview with shell for graduate commerical role.
the structure of the interview was the same as everyone has described here, not too tough but very probing qu's. the lady interviewing me was dutch and quite hard to understand at time so make sure you have a good phone line.
she started by checking what i was applying for, verifying my right to work in UK etc then into competency qu's - most challenging experience, describe a difficult decision, experience leading a team & challenges faced etc. The last part was the hardest, I didn't do well in it. The options I were given were changing demographic of workforce, green issues faced by shell, shells reputation and can't remember the last one. I was asked to identify opportunities and threats with little guidance and when I finished speaking she kept asking me to continue so found this difficult. Good luck to anyone else applying, my advice is to prepare eg's to the competency qu's, she kept stopping me to go into more detail on a point i made, so make sure you know what you're talking about and highlight your strengths.
I'm applying for London, Sales and Marketing.
Once you have passed the telephone interview, Shell will send you a briefing pack that tells you exactly what the activities are. I would say that you need basic business acumen to get through the case study. Questions could be on the lines such as... what are the risks involved? what are the strategies? its basically the telephone interview questions but on the case study.
Just a tip about Shell Recruitment Day
Shell does really well in preping you up for it. Go to the Shell Recruitment Day briefing pack, read it and make sure you know what's going on. The briefing pack essentially contains what activities you'll have, the timing and who's going to be there. You have to go the day before and DO GO! I had to arrive at the Shell Centre at 2.45pm the day before, its important because it's a practice session they are running (case study + group discussion). Finally, I would say, when given a question, think for a few seconds before answering it, a well thought out answer is better than answering quickly with some focus.
Parsely, could you please give more details on what happened during the SRD? What are the situations they put you in and the types of questions they asked? Also, does preparing for the case study help? What was it about?
Thanks a bunch for the tips. I have not been told anything since I applied about two-three weeks ago. Which country are you looking to work?
Hi I've got to the Shell Recruitment Day (assessment centre) anyone that has been got any tips or advice?
Mine is within two weeks time.
Just to let you know, the telephone questions topics at the end have been changed.
@ felsong how was your interview which scheme did you apply for?
What kind of questions did they ask you?
Hi, anyone here interviewed for their graduate programme? Any detailed info on what was asked besides what has already been posted? Thanks! Gonna have my interview in 2 days~
I have just read the entire tread and I would like to say thanks to all of you who has contributed with information that might come in handy. I am having a telephone interview for summer internship 2012 tomorrow and I will post any valuable information here afterwards!
I have to say Shell telephone interview sucks!
What the hell are they interviewing?
It is more like a verbal and social interview, without anything technical and reasonable.
If you are good at promoting yourself and the verbal ability, you will definitely pass the interview, otherwise, you'd better find an alternative to enter into Shell.
Anyone had any phone interviews for the 2012 grad intake?
Hi there, I have applied a commercial internship at Shell. My career preferences are finance and trading. What questions will they ask in the telephone/face-to-face interview? What preparation do I need for the interview? Thanks.
I did the telephone interview with Shell a few days ago, and I would firstly really like to thank people for posting their experiences because it really helped me.
Secondly, the interview is pretty much what has been stated in this forum.
I'm still waiting for a reply from Shell, fingers crossed!! :D
i'll be doing my phone interview in 1 week's time! man, i'm really excited and nervous about it. just a few questions which i sincerely hope u can answer me:
1)were the capital questions repeated or were they new i.e. not shared by any of the kind souls here?
2)did u prepare for the interview based on all these tips shared here? is it sufficient to just prepare based on all these tips? cause i've been trying to prep for it and other than these tips, reading shell's sustainability report and keeping myself abreast on the recent happenings in the world, i do not know what else to do.
hope to hear some genuine comments on how to prep for the interview from u! :D
I would say that what is written in this forum... is a very good base.
You still have to prepare and practice to make your answers more fluent and fluid. But there aren't any trick questions!
Hope your interview was good! I would really appreciate if you could sharwe....Which scheme have to applied for? What were the 4 topics given to you on capacity question?
I have my interview sometime in 1st week of april for graduate scheme.
It went well, Danke! The questions basically followed the SAME format presented here by the earlier posters, except the ones on capacity. I was really caught off balance when the interviewer spelt out the 4 questions on capacity and most were different from what was earlier said here..The only one similar was that of Co2... I tried to answer the one I took..Hahaha, my answers did not go without some grammatical errors; was instead of is and are instead of were blah blah. But the number of correct sentences I made, I think, far outweighed the errorneous ones..Nonetheless I sense everything went well, and sincerely hope I am correct..I can't wait to have Shell written ón my CV. I guess that opens the way to other oil coys, when He agrees sha. I did not apply for the graduate scheme.
The questions on capacity were:
Leadership Development Programmes
Diversity and Inclusivenes
I guess you will have to attend the SRD...
Good luck with your interview.
Thanks alot and I sincerely hope that you get through this one as you rightly said there's nothing like a having a name like Shell on your CV...I hope you get that soon :) About the errors I guess those are part and parcel of this process...am surely you'll be fine.
Thanks once agian for your inputs, it will surely help.
this document tells you all you to know about shell interview
fuel you career shell shell application skill presentation.
is free online Google it
Amazing, thank you.
Hey Sealion, thanks alot for your kind input...I just saw your message now.
Did you apply for a technical role? Was it for a summer internship position, Gourami or SRD?
I would like to read from you again.
Hey...Just finished my interview...Thanks all, thanks a lot.
Questions on capacity were different !
How does it fell to work in Shell UK? Can a resident of UK apply to Shell elsewhere?
this post is to appreciate everyone who has made comment on this blog and all free information available online. Thanks
my Advice is to stay strictly with information on this forum, they follow it to give every applicant a fair chance. I almost made a mistake by going about looking for information. the interview structure is the same as given in earlier post here the question on capacity are four you choose one to talk on, if you prepare too much for, it may go against you they need your fresh idea what you can come up with (school career adviser told me this) just try your best.
achievement and relationship question you can determine from behavioral interview question website Kent uni etc, is about 10 question in different form that can arise from it just go and prepare a good answer and expect probing questions too.
don't forget you must ask question, try to ask one question that is not common I did and I knew it impressed the interviewer, and be prepared to defend the question you ask i.e why you asked is a surprised question that is not commonly asked in this stage but they do.
my last advice is that the interview is to know you better, it is all about you. use yourself as example don't be afraid to show weakness but remember to say what you gain and how you overcame the weakness. you language or fluency in English is not assessed just make sure you communicate well. I suspect must of their interviewer don't speak English as a first language again if they use that it is not fair. Shell is a global company English is not the only language they speak. They now verify your right to wk in the UK if you are a foreign student or emigrant in the UK.
I have been interviewed for Shell Graduate Scheme i applied for a Technical Role. Does anyone Know if they contact you by phone or email about the interview outcome and when is the last interview for a technical role i.e technical interview.
Hi, how did your interview go? Could you kindly spell out the full questions asked and how you responded?
The results should be out in two weeks and of course by email..Nonetheless, you should expect a phone call too..I got this info from people who had earlier gone through the process...
Now, I need you to hint on the questions asked and how you responded..Full details please.
Also if any one could comment if these topic differ between commercial and technical, internship and graduate and etc.
meeting global energy demands, the reputation of Shell, global standards, changing demographic
- Diversity and Inclusivenes
- Helping Local Governements
- Recruiting and Retraining high calibre staff
- Social Responsibility
mini_cooper mentioned virtual teams as well, so is it just random topics or it has some pattern
I have my interview with Shell on 7th Mar ch for internship technical role. I hope your interview went very well. Could you please share what were the four topics given to you on which you were asked to talk? I am also really worried about that bit...
Apologies for such late reply but I was away due to some personal problem and I had to postpone my interview that was scheduled for 16th Feb due to some medical emergency. Now I may hv it in 1st week of april. I have applied for graduate scheme. I hope your interview went well.
Sorry once again.
Thanks mini_cooper_x. I really appreciate your inputs :)
I am new to wiki job and I am just wondering if anyone can share some more details about the telephonic interview of Shell graduate programme.
I have applied for graduate marketing role and have my interview on 16th Feb. I would really appreciate if anyone can share details of their recent experience of the same and the topics they give to talk on, during the interview.
Thanks Hs1008, tht is really helpful and I appreciate it.
Hpe you get good feedback from them...
These Topics are they asked the same way for commercial and technical roles. I ws wondering hw r they going to test the technical side?
Thank you very much Hs1008. I really appreciate your comments.
Hopefully at least you get good feedback out of it.
These Topics does it have any relation whether you applied for technical role or commercial? Hw are they going to test your technical knowledge?
I had my interview a few weeks ago.
Unfortunately, I wasn't successful.
Here's how it goes.
1) They'l confirm your location preference, rols preference.
2) Your greatest achievement.
3) Can't remember.
4) 4 topics and choose one to discuss.
They gave me recruiting and retaining high calibre staff, social responsibility, can't remember the other two..
but the two i mentioned are most common.
i don't know why i got rejected, cuz I thought i did well.
Anyhow, hope this helps.
Why dont you ask for a feedback from them?
Hi every1, I have got a telephone interview coming up on 7th march.
Also I applied for technical roles. has any one done a telephone interview recently? your input will be very helpful.
Also the question about capacity, does the topics differ for commercial and technical roles.... any1 who could comment on this?
Thanks in advance
Thanks mini_cooper. All the best with your application.
Has anyone done any telephone interview recently? Have you heard back from Shell?
That has taken more than a month whilst it should take 10 working days according to their website, have you tried to contact them? Can it be that they are a bit reluctant as you are an international student? I can send you their London number if you want
Thank you so much for your concern. I did contact them and was told that they are a bit overwhelmed with applications at the moment, and will take a bit more time to get back to me. Honestly, I dont think being an international student would be a problem. I was told by my friend that some of his friends studied abroad and went for interviews in that country. Once they were employed, they were sent back to the homecountry to work. That's not bat at all...
I am in the same situation as you guys. I have been shortlisted for the commercial upstream/downstream interview 2011.
Has anyone done any interview for UK Grad scheme any day soon? Thank you in advance
Hi Mini, so have you heard anything? I hope you will make it, good luck to you.
Thanks for your wishes. I was actually phone interviewed but am still waiting for the outcome...
I have my interview with Shell on 16th Feb for a graduate commercial marketing role. I hope your interview went well. Could you please share what were the four topics given to you on which you were asked to talk? I am really worried about that bit...
All the best for your interview. Mine was ok, and similar to the ones posted by the previous users. I dont remember all, but one of them was virtual team, which I boldly chose. I think most of the following questions related to the chosen topic were about common sense.
Is there anyone invited for a face to face interview for a graduate scheme? They say on the web that there is no difference between phone and face to face, but I can't stop thinking about their justification of inviting someone personally when they can save money and time by just calling. Anyone has any views on this?
I have my telephone interview with Shell scheduled for next Tuesday (18th January) for a summer internship.
My career preferences were 1) Well Engineering and 2) production engineering..
Anyone here applied for 2011 intake?
Please discuss your telephone interview,..
BAHF, thanks a lot :-) ....fingers crossed with your application as well!
Congratulations Ileannaconst, so glad for you! That was fast!
I'm in for the Gourami
Has anybody heard back from shell after their telephone interview? i called them last week Friday and they said my application was still under consideration and they would get back to me soon.
Anyone heard anything yet?
mine was on Nov 18th...
were those for technical roles, what topics were you given for the interview?
Ive got mine in two weeks!
Nope, it was for a commercial role. It was in the same format as given by msoct 06. Take a look at the post on page 1.
Hi everyone, I am new to Wiki jobs. I had my telephone interview on the 5th of November and I still have not heard back.
Anybody heard back after their telephone interview recently?
I had my interview for Gourami last week and I was actually expecting to receive a call from so. from HR.....apparently I was called by so. really big. I'm supposed to get an answer next week....(( .....yeah, and I pretty much can confirm that the interview resembles what has been written on this forum.
What I recommend is to give them a landline number for the Tel. Interview. Unfort where I am doing my internship ain't got one and through my cellphone I was not able to hear properly.....regarding the topics to discuss I really prepared the Co2 story and stuff.......
Unfortunately that was not among my topics. Let's see...all the best to you guys
@Pandajump: did u apply for the Gourami as well:?
Does anyone have updates on their interviews?
Nope, not yet. I had mine on the 5th of November. When did you have yours?
Upstream Engineering, they emailed me. Good luck
They say 10 days, generally they get back to you quickly if your through but depends on what position you've applied to. I heard back within 2 days.
Thanks g0ggs123! I applied for Upstream Commercial but the interviewer said she'll put other options as well like trading and downstream so I'm a bit confused what's on their system but technically, it should be Upstream Commercial. What about you?
I have a telephone interview with Shell in a couple of days. I applied for a commercial position in the downstream business. And they sent me the scope of work of this position. Any advice or feedback please to prepare for this interview? :) Thank you in advance :)
Hi, I trust you have had your interview with Shell - how did it go?
Could you please share your recent experience?
What specific questions were asked and the following probing ones?
What there a topic you have to dicuss this year?
What was the most difficult aspect of the interview?
I have one up and coming - not date set yet but your support would be much appreciated!
And also did they call you or email you? :)
I had my telephone interview with Shell a week ago and the interviewer said they will come back to me in the next 7 days. 7 days ran out today though and I still haven't heard back... Does anyone know how quickly I can expect any reply?
Thanks a lot!!!
Anyone done the telephone interview yet for a technical role? If so what topics were you given to discuss on at the end of the interview?
I just called the Senior Candidate Coordinator's number and she did not answer her phone. Left a voice message, crossing fingers now.
anyways, thanks everyone for the tips given. :) and all the best!
Has anyone completed Shell's finance graduate program interview recently ? If so, were the questions similar to the ones in the thread ? Please elaborate in case you have any details .. My interview is just around the corner ..
Thanks and Good Luck to all !
I would love to, but there wasn't any number attached with all the emails, only the email addresses. That is why I'm getting jittery, I wanted to call earlier but there isn't any number to call! I'm going to give it another 15 minutes wait, then I will start bombarding all the recruiters' emails..
I am waiting for Shell's recruiter to call me..my interview was scheduled to be 40 minutes ago but my phone has been silent. HELP!
Call the candidate co-ordinator using the details at the bottom of the email that invited you to the interview stage NOW. My interviewer called me about 10min late but don't leave it to chance.
Has anyone been to the SRD? If you could share your experiences that would be much appreciated.
It's good to hear that I'm not the only one stuck in this awkward position! I also applied for Trading.
I thought would share my Shell recruitment experience so far:
This information relates to Shell UK and a Commercial Internship in Summer 2010
I applied in November 2009 using the online application form and received an email about an hour afterwards confirming my application had been received and I would receive "separate notification of the outcome in due course"
Four days later I received an email inviting me to the next stage, the telephone interview. My interview slot was booked using the Shell online system which becomes active when you make it to this stage. I had the option of a face to face interview in The Hague but decided that a telephone interview would be best. I had the interview in early December, which, although was challenging, I found the whole experience rather enjoyable.
About 2 weeks after the interview I received another email saying that I had passed the interview and that "a member of our recruitment team will be in contact with you in the near future."
In early January I received an email from a Shell recruiter to discuss my preferences for an internship. This was to try and identify a suitable internship that would match my skills and the business requirements of the company. My application status on the Shell application system now read "Final Assessment". Now it is just a waiting game to see if there is a suitable project for me to work on.
Is there anyone else at this stage waiting for a suitable project to come up?
Exact same position as of yesterday! But I only sent of my application 3 weeks ago! Can't believe you've been waiting since January :( Whic commercial branch did you apply to? I've applied for trading.
Hey... thanks so much kokojobs and chrism2671 ! : )
The waiting is the hardest part.. i agree.. plus being international student is not really making it any easier... am really banking on this one ..lets see what happens.
Shall wait till the 3 weeks time period and then I guess I shall call them to find out.
I am an international student too. I have been waiting for 3 weeks for the telephone interview results. what was your outcome? did they tell anything about work permit problems? I know your post has been a while, but it would be great if you could give some advice. I am just guessing that they are held back by this issue, maybe due to a new gov legislation...
Thanks so much...
Did you hear back? I suggest you give them a call. Normally they have hundreds or thousands of applicants and so it is easy to get lost in the system!
You cant really determine if its good news or bad news from the fact that you haven't heard from them. Just hope for the best. I know how it feels to be waiting. I've been waiting to hear from another company since Jan. grrr
Anyway wrt to ur question, I was sent an email regarding the result.
Hang in there m8
thanks for ur reply kokojobs... its been a lil more than 2 weeks now since I heard anything from them... can't be good news right ? I mean if it was good news they wld have got back to me earlier....
By the way did they send you an e-mail or call you regarding the result ? So that I can stop carrying my phone arnd every where I move :-p
thanks u so much for ur inputs..really appreciate it ! : )
I got a reply within a few days. All the best.
Sorry for the late reply... I heard from them. Didn't get through. They got back to me within 3 weeks i think. All the best.
Has anyone had an telephone interview recently and got to know the outcome... ? Any idea how long does it take to get to know the results of the telephone interview.. I had mine like 2 weeks ago but don't know the outcome as yet....
Any inputs would be really helpful... !
thanks : )
any idea how long does it take to know the outcome of the first round telephone interview ? roughly how many days or weeks does it take?
As i said earlier it was a brain storming session really. Its what you personally think about the topic and then what that means to the company. In any case its best to discuss in from the company's perspective.
I applied for a technical role...
They wanted you to discuss the topic.
Positives, Negatives, Risks in implementation, how to manage the risks. how u think it will change in say 10 yrs.
thanks kokojobs! But aren't these topics quite wide for eg Social Responsibility. From what aspect did you think they wanted to discuss these topics? From a company's perspective ? positive negative of that presumably? Just tying to get a feel for where they are coming from. Thanks again for your input!
And good luck!
Thanks for all the tips everyone! Good luck with your interviews.
I was wondering if anyone could share a bit more about the last part of the interview . Topics that come up. I've applied for technical roles and wondered if that would change the topics at all?
For eg the ones kokojobs posted (listed below) - are they suitable for non-technical roles?
- Diversity and Inclusivenes
Anyone here applied for technical roles. If so what sort of topics did you get? Also, what aspect are the looking ofr you to discuss. for eg global energy demands is such a huge topic. So are the topics above. What sort of discussion ar ethey looking for do you think?
Also, once an application is submitted, can one retrieve it after? I have not saved a copy of it on my hard disk (very foolish, I know) and now slightly concerned about what I put down as my second choice. Hmmmm. Any help would be much appreciated!
thanks for the info kokojobs..really appreciate ur help : )
From what i remember of Part 3, the topic was defined and the i was asked what it meant to me and then asked to just talk about it. so its from what i said that she asked question, mainly probing questions like. what else?, what are the risks of what u said, how will u minimize/manage it, how wud it change in a 10yrs time?
Has anyone been put through to the SRD after a telephone interview recently? When is it?
Also is there anything that u can particularly expect in part 3 ... like a list of topics that keep getting repeated or something ..... or it just depend on ur luck that day ? :-p
thanks a lot for the info kokojobs :-)... i guess not much preparation can be done for part 3...was it difficult to answer any of the questions in part 3 in particular ?
Any info or advice u can give on how best to prepare for that part ?
Thanks a lot for your detailed information.
how did it go?
Went well. Some of the preprepared questions asked in the second interview were too complex and did not really apply to the situations that I have described in my examples. When that occured I just told them that I did not know the answer and thought the question was not relevant.
I asked some good questions.
Not I am through to the Shell Recruitment Day. Anyone been to those? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Whent well. Some of the preprepared questions asked in the second interview were too complex and did not really apply to the situations that I have described in my examples. When that occured I just told them that I did not know the answer and thought the question was not relevant.
Very similar to mscot06 above. Here's my experience:
It was split in four parts.
A couple of general questions about your career preference, why and location preferences.
Part 2 - Competency Based Questions
The main questions were followed by a variety of probing questions aimed at finding out specific things you did in certain recent situations /experiences. The probing questions tried to capture the usual SituationTaskActionResult or ContextActionResult. Make sure you know your stuff inside out plus what you would change wrt to your actions and what you learned about yourself just incase .
- Proudest achievement
-Teamwork situation where there as a disagreement
-A time when you had to explain a complex or difficult issue to someone eg some bad news.
Part Three - Capacity
Given 4 topics to select one and have a chat about it. (depending on the time left or the programme, a topic may be given to you, ie no choice of topic). This was a brainstorming session really and there were enough probing questions to help you figure out what to say. Of the four this is what i remember though i'm not certain of the exact word for word wording of the topics. The topic you choose or get given may be defined for you and then the conversation starts.
- Social Responsibilty
Please share your experience especially if anything was different.
Thanks for the heads up Kokojobs, was a real help with my telephone interview which was today. It went pretty much exactly as you said, the only difference being a few different quetions for Part 3. One of which was discuss the pros and cons of using Virtual Teams. The other I didn't hear so well so can't really say for sure
Hi mscot06 and other WikiJobbers,
I have passed to the second round of interviews with Shell for an an analyst position in the downstream business.
The first interview followed the structure outlined in mscot06's post on February 9, 2010.
My next interview is with two people from the Downstream division.
Does anyone know what sort of questions will be asked and how the 2nd interview differs from the 1st?
I was advised that the questions will be on: Capacity, Achievement and Relationships.
I appreciate your prompt reply's as my interview is in two days.
I have a telephone interview with Shell in a couple of days. I applied for a commercial position in the downstream business. And they sent me the scope of work of this position. Any advice or feedback please to prepare for this interview? :) Thank you in advance :)
Could you tell which position you applied for? what is HR or something like that?
it looks like they(shell) are asking brainstorming questions related to the chosen field.
I have telephone interview coming tuesday and i have applied for finance/trading.
Has anyone heard back from shell after the telephone interview? I had mine over 2 weeks ago and no word from them
Hi favour001. I have a telephone interview with Shell in a couple of days and I was wondering if you could please share your experience with me? What were the questions they asked you and how long did the interview last ? Could you also please let me know what were the questions asked for commerical awarness and some tips on how i could prepare.
Your help would be very valuable.
go through some of these case studies... might helphttp://www.thetimes100.co.uk/company_list.phphttp://www.thetimes100.co.uk/case-study--balancing-stakeholder-needs--76-352-1.php
Thanks msoct06 for posting your experience. Sorry to hear you did not go through. Hope something comes up soon for you.
for the benefit of others i share some more information.
the business case study is based on a fictitious setting, a fictitious country called Aduki and shell has some activities and plan to increase the activities there by taking over more oil exploration, bidding, etc. you have to think about various issues like safety, environment, work force, etc also more important is financial data. u will be given charts, graphs, etc about financial and other oil data; so have a look and try to come up with some figures. also think about short term and long term strategy and what would be the broader implications of the decision. read emails and headings and try to catch the key words. think about increasing capacity of plants, ensuring safety, work life balance, local work force, satisfying the govt, stakeholders, etc. also care for shell employees. you will have to think about the budget allocated and hence see how u plan for short medium and long. there are env concerns like gas flaring from the plant, oil platform etc.
Hello Thank you for this. I have a SRD and am more worrired about the technical interview any tips on that?
i had gone through. unfortunately i have not been successful.
it consisted of
individual case study (lot of information, papers, emails, reports, press release etc. are given and in 1 hr you have to go through them and then make a 5 mt presentation on the issues and problems and solution and strategies. then about 30 mts question session by the reviewers).
group case study (similar to the above, but the social investment options have to be discussed and agreed upon a group (we were six candidates))
then technical presentation
in all the cases be prepared to show the CART things... thats the key for the success. so think about CART CART CART .......
has anyone gone through the Shell recruitment day? What was the day like?
haven't got a date for my SRD
check ur wikijob msg :-)
I have got a call for SRD in the beginning of next year..
Have you already done with your SRD ? Could you share your experience please
was anyone recently invited to attend SRD (assessment centre @ Shell) ?
Many thanks msoct06 for your useful tips. I hope yours went very well. And i hope you landed the job.
Recently i had telephone interview with shell
kind of structured interview
first about ur career preference
second about ur achievement that u r proud of; how did u achieve, what challenges u faced
then about relation; ur interaction with ur colleagues, ur relationship with ur boss
fourth about ur communication skills, how u explain complex things to others
you have to give examples for everything
then final part choose one of the four topics and talk about .. ofcourse they would start the discussion and you have to carry on and talk globally
the topics were
meeting global energy demands, the reputation of Shell, global standards, changing demographic..
hummmm! dat sounds interesting, thanks for the info will contact you if I av any other questions
