Treasury professionals must work in an ever-changing environment which requires forward thinking. A treasury team looks at the questions “How do we decide what to invest in? How do we raise the money to make those investments? How do we control the risk in the organisation? It’s a dynamic industry and treasury professionals are among the top earners in finance.
Treasury is all about managing the money in a business, whether it’s a national company or a large global organisation – there are many facets to a career in treasury. It involves handling the banking requirements and relationships, the funding for the business and managing financial risk. It incorporates raising and managing money, currency, commodity and interest rate risk management and dealing. In some companies, treasury also extends to the related areas of insurance, pensions, property and taxation.
What qualifications do I need?
Treasury as a career choice is perfect if you have just completed a finance-based degree. Most disciplines are acceptable, although accountancy, finance, economics or mathematics are the most useful. A masters degree in a financial or management related discipline will look good on your CV and will offer insight into new opportunities including treasury.
Specialist treasury qualifications are also available to enhance your career prospects. The most comprehensive and internationally recognised qualifications for professional treasurers are the Association of Corporate Treasurer’s (ACT) AMCT Diploma in Treasury and the MCT Advanced Diploma in Treasury, Risk and Corporate Finance. AMCT is a core treasury qualification which delivers understanding and knowledge of the essential topics within treasury. MCT develops advanced strategic thinking and is regarded as MBA level. Certificates within the diplomas can also be taken as independent qualifications.
How much can I expect to get paid?
You are likely to begin your career investing cash, dealing with foreign exchange or developing financial/risk models, and can expect a minimum starting salary of £25,000. Qualified treasurers with experience can expect a salary of £100,000+ with additional higher earning opportunities.
