Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS)

Application Process

[Edit]

The application process is as follows:

Telephone Interview

[Edit] RBS screen candidates with a telephone interview at the first stage. Your interview will be with a member of HR and will last 35-40 minutes. It is a mix of career motivation questions and competency based interview. Questions that you are likely to be asked include:
  • Why RBS?
  • How does RBS differ from other firms?
  • What sources did you use to find out about RBS?
  • What qualities can you bring to RBS?
  • What is your understanding of the RBS group and the division you have applied to?
  • Tell me five facts about RBS.
  • Why your university?
  • Why your degree course?
  • Tell me about a time when you have shown leadership.
  • Tell me about a time where you have had to work towards excellence (why such a high goal, difficulties, what would you do differently, next goal).
  • Tell me about a time where you had to collaborate with others towards success (how did you contribute, what was your role, problems, what would you do differently, what did you learn).
  • Tell me about a time where you have found a solution to a problem where there was no obvious solution (how did you find the solution, what were the other options, how did you decide on the solution, problems, what did you learn).
  • Tell me about a time you had to teach someone something, when they had no prior experience of it (why the methods you used, outcomes, what did you learn).
  • Tell me about a time you had to present to an audience (why the methods you used, outcomes, what did you learn).
You can reasonably expect questions about the service line to which you have applied. For example, commercial banking:
  • Why Commercial Banking at RBS?
  • What attracted you to the RBS Commercial Banking programme?
  • Why are you suited to Commercial Banking?

The telephone interviewer will be writing your answers down, so you may be asked to repeat yourself several times. The questions will be read from a list, so the interview may feel scripted. Consequently you should be prepared to do most of the talking and not expect too much input or chemistry from the interviewer. Don't be afraid to repeat yourself - your responses to each question are marked separately. The interviewer may not be a HR representative from RBS, but rather a call centre representative. Do not hesitate in asking the operator/interviewer to repeat what they have typed as your response. If there are any errors in what the interviewer has documented, make sure you correct them.

Ability Testing Centre

[Edit]

If you are successful at the telephone interview stage, you may be invited to an Ability Testing Centre, but this may be included in an all-day Assessment Centre instead (see below). This lasts around four hours and consists of the following:

Assessment Centre

[Edit]

If successful at the Ability Testing Centre then you will be invited to attend an Assessment Centre. (Note: Some programmes only have an all-day Assessment Centre, which includes the Ability Testing Centre activities). This is a half-day and consists of the following:

Competency Based Interview

[Edit]

The interview is relatively straight forward, following a typical competency based interview style. Career motivation questions are asked at the start of the interview, but RBS don't typically probe too much into your understanding of the bank/sector for the more generalist schemes such as Business Services Leadership. (Note this is NOT the case for all schemes).

Individual Presentation or Role Play Exercise

[Edit]

For the presentation you have 25 minutes to read a detailed case study and prepare presentation material on flip-chart paper. You then give a 10 minute presentation to an assessor and spend another 10 minutes answering the assessor's questions about the proposals/ideas you have presented.

The Role Play exercise involves a scenario where you are working as a team and someone who you have been working with is not producing the required high standard of work. You get given a brief about your role, the team you work in and more information in the form of emails. You are then given time to make notes and prepare a plan to bring in with you to the Role Play Exercise, which lasts around 20 minutes. An actor will enter, masquerading as your troublesome colleague, and you then need to extract an agreement from them by the end of the meeting.

Group Exercise

[Edit]

In the Group Exercise each group member (usually 4-5 candidates per group) is given a different proposal to look over and time to prepare notes on it. Each person must then present a quick summary of their proposal to the rest of the group, doing their best to sell it at this early stage. Following these short summaries, the group has approximately 20 minutes to discuss the pros and cons of all the proposals and come to an agreement on TWO which they would like to go forward with. It is important to demonstrate both good teamworking and influencing skills during this exercise.

I have a telephone interview for Retail and I am going to follow this format, I hope this is enough preparation? Thanks.

Hi, does anyone know whether there is a verval reasoning test in the Assessment center.

sunshine01

Hi all,

I recently attended an AC for RBS and thought i would share my experience. Only fair since I have used these sights in the past.

AC was 1 day and took place in London. Was difficult to find as there are so many RBS buildings in London so leave yourself enough time, get directions, google map it etc etc.

At the risk of repeating what other people havesaid, there were 5 exercises - group exercise, role play, competency interview, problem solving test and numeracy test.

The competency interview was very similar to telephone, why RBS, why that scheme in particular, where will you be in 5 years time, tell me a time you faced criticism, tell me a time you improved a system, tell me when you have to confront someone.

The role play was slightly odd. It was with a colleague who was not pulling his weight. You were not his boss though, only his peer. You had emails and website articles, and in all honesty i wasn't sure how to use these. I guess not being aggressive, making a plan, not being patronising is all important.

The group exercise we were all given sponsorship deal proposals and asked to decide as a group what 2 to accept. I think the trick here is to work as a group, think in terms of what is best for the bank, and not get too preoccupied with making sure your proposal is picked. My proposal was not picked because i was shouted down by other members of the group but this didn't seem to do me any harm. Be sure to include quieter members of the group and make sure you are positive/not argumentative.

The problem solving task was different cards with patterns that you had to decifier and then asnwer questions. The kind of one that would be fine if you had bags of time! no way to prepare, i've never seen anything like this!!

The numerical test was just about working quickly and accurately.

Hope this is helpful to everyone.

Thanks Sunshine for your brief info wrt AC...

kundada

Hi, i have a face to face interview with the recruiting manager at RBS for RESCUE ADVISOR POSITION. please can anyone give me a hint of what to expect

dezarray

did they inform u that they were going to arrange a phone interview with u or they just gave u a surprise call?

cwsykes

Hi can can anyone tell me what the numerical test is like and what sort of questions to expect. I have applied for the Corporate Banking Graduate Scheme and my math is a little rusty! Any help would be a big help!

jang

hello, please can anyone give me clues to the numerical test for RBS. I have just passed the psychometric test and have been invited to take the online numerical test. I am clueless of what it is all about. Does anyone have an idea of how many questions are there and the time alloacted for the test. I would highly appreciate your comments!

jang

I'm also in the same situation but mine is for the Retail leadership programme. I guess we all are doing the same kind of numeraical test. Have you done yours or have you gotten any clues on how the test looks like? I'll be happy to hear from you. cheers.

princetongirl

I have got a telephone interview on 4 March for retail leadership. As for the online test, I was required to answer 20 questions in 20 mins. I did not manage to answer all of them since I hardly had enough time but I guess I was quite accurate in whatever I had answered. The tests include percentages, graphs and fractions. I guess anyone can do them but the key thing is to do it within the time limit!

jang

Congrats for making it through to the telephone interview. I wrote the numeraical test last week where I managed to answer about 18 questions. I haven't heard from them yet. I hope it will be good news eventually. If I make it then that means I may have to go for a phone interview like you I guess. Well just to wish you the very bestof luck in your phone interview.

ersourabhbhola

hi, i just gave psychometric test , can you tell in what duration of time did you got response about result of psychometric test ?...
thanks

princetongirl

Thank you Jang. I dont know whether Ive successfully made it through phone interview. The interviewer told me that they either reject you strt away or they sort of keep you in consideration until rest of the applicants get done with their interviews I guess. So this is the reply Ive got until now

"Thank you for making the time available to participate in the telephone interview for The Royal Bank of Scotland Group graduate development programme.

We enjoyed talking to you, and after considering your responses we remain interested in your application.

At this time, we are unable to confirm whether we will be progressing your application to the next stage. However, we will be in contact with you as soon as possible to confirm how we wish to proceed."

As for the phone interview, Ive posted the details on retail leadership phone interview thread.

sourabh, I got the link for numerical as soon as I completed the psychometric test.

princetongirl

ive got assessment centre for retail leadership on 30th march..can anyone help me pls....esp with regards to more info on role play and group discussion!

poodle

anyone got anything on wealth management scheme at RBS?

ljintheuk

Hi all, I have a super centre appointment in a week. I'm sure the guy said that all I had was two ability tests (Able and fast track) and a competency interview so all this talk of group work and presentations is confusing me a little. Can anyone clarify what I should expect please? Appreciate any help you can give me.

ay42

@lijntheuk

Don't worry, the super centre only consists of the two ability tests and and the competency interview. The presentations and stuff is for the final round assessment. At least that's what mine was like. I think it depends on what division you've applied for. If you have been told that you'll only have the ability test and an interview then that's all you should get

Business girl

Dose any one got the tel interview from RBS wealth management yet? i will have it the next week. the HR said it is only competency based, but i don't know whether there will be some motivation questions.

can anyone give some clue what kind of the question they gona to ask?
cheers,

winniemeijun

I've got AC for Retail Leadership on 16th Apr. Any advise about the AC? esp about fast track and Able Test pls x

jobseeker2010

Hi Cathy, I gave my phone interview for Wealth Management a couple of weeks backs. It involves motivational as well as competency questions. Standard motivational questions like Why RBS?; What do you know about RBS?; What do you know about your role in particular?; What sources of research have you used?, Etc..and the competency questions are focused on team work, excellence, customer service, problem solving. Hope this helps..

Business girl

Hi jobseeker,

thanks for your information, i have already got the phone interview and almost had the same questions.

Have you got an invitation towards AC?

cheers,

ljintheuk

hello, can anyone give me some insight to the final round assessment, the one i believe includes some group work and a presentation? just want to fully understand the format and what is expected

vib08190

Hi

I had a telephone interview yesterday for the Natwest/ RBS Accelerate program . I don't know how well it went as i have nothing to gauge it on. So looking for any insight. The girl that interviewed me at the end asked where i would prefer to be located and where i would "if successful" prefer to do the assessment center.I this standard? Also i received a rather worrying email "Thank you for taking the time to interview for a role with RBS/Natwest, We will be in touch shortly to let you know the outcome of the interview". Worrying mainly because, after reading other forums that this is not the standard email distributed post interview.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. (Thanks in advance)

adnanmbs

Hey Vibo8190, I hope you succeed in your interview. I have the same interview tomorrow for exactly the same program. Can you please tell me what type of questions they emphasized on? Further how did they start the interview, as I am preparing for that but it would be a great help if you can give me any advise regarding the interview. Thank you

adnanmbs

Further if you can tell me the warm up questions that will be helpful as well. Thank you

AM

Vibo / adnanmbs,
I have my Accelerate Telephone interview tomorrow. Any advice, tips, questions?
Much appreciated

D88

Hi, I've applied for this about 4 weeks ago and still shows under review when I log-in...

How quickly did either of you here back since applying??

Thanks

wannabeprofessional

hi i applied for the same scheme. can you please tell us about the format of the telephone interview and questions you were asked. thanks

wannabeprofessional

hi i applied for the same scheme. can you please tell us about the format of the telephone interview and questions you were asked. thanks

AM

@D88
I got the first email, which was for an online numerical test within a week of applying and got my email for the telephone interview within 5 minutes of the test. But don't worry. A friend of mine had applied at around the same time as you and she got her email for the test just yesterday.

@wannabeproff and anyone else who is interested. The telephone interview is pretty easy. Whether I did well by their standards or not, that I do not know yet but it was very straight forward. It did not even last very long. Hardly 20 minutes. In fact I think I was a little over prepared for it. They test you on your work understanding. Your motivations. Professional and personal interests. And social compatibility.

Hope it helps! Good luck

kammy123

@ AM hi im sorry if im asking for alot bt can you please tell what specific quetions did they ask you in the interview. will appreciat your help

AM

Yeah, well I do not remember the exact questions but let me give it a shot.

What is your understanding of the Accelerate Programme?
Why do you want to join it?
What type of work is of interests to you?
What are your interests outside of work?
Situational example of teamwork
Situational example of dealing with people in formal and informal situations

In all there were some 6-7 questions. They were not exactly structured like above but the implication was the same. Hope it helps and Good Luck

Tigs41

@AM

Any news following on from your telephone interview? I hope it went well, I have mine later this week and the info you have provided is really useful.

wannabeprofessional

thanks for your input. did any body had telephone interview and had different experience than ones above? those who had telephone interview did you find out if you passed? and how long do they take to get back to you?

kammy123

hey guys would anyone please share their experience of AC for accelerated programme, because i have got one soon and i am clueless what type of assessments are there going to be. will appreciate your help !!!

Tigs41

@kammy

Any tips for the telephone interview, the questions they asked were the majority comptency based or split over Natwest/RBS? Any help would be great.

j9 87

hey

Has anyone has had the email inviting you to an assessment day? am a little confused as to what the written test will include as it says it should last around 45 mins. Does anybody know if it will contain maths? or just some sort of written exercise?? The other tasks listed are role play, presentation and an interview.

Any insight would be really appreciated! thanks

AM

Hi guys,
I was travelling and was not able to reply to your posts before.

@Tigs41: Yeah I heard from them within a week of my telephone interview. I got through to the AC. I am glad I was able to help. I have noticed a lot of people ask questions before their interviews but never come back contribute their experiences. I am trying to break that tradition. Hope you got through too!!

@wannabeprofessional: Most of the people I know who had applied for this programme heard within the first two weeks.

@kammy: I believe the Bank has not had the Accelerate programme before this year since I am yet to come across anyone from previous batches. As for this year, I think no one would have much to share about the AC since the first AC is on the 3rd or 4th of June.

@J9 87: Yes I received the AC invitation email. I think the 45 minutes written is all math since my email say 45 minute written numerical test. It will most likely be the same sort of questions as the test on-line. However I think it will be around 40-50 questions based on the allotted time. Perhaps its the practice of ensuring that the online test was attempted by you personally.

Hope it helps! Good luck!! And lets try to keep this forum alive by sharing experiences from AC.

kammy123

@ tigs41 some of the questions i remeber r the same as explained by AM which are ,,,
What is your understanding of the Accelerate Programme? Why do you want to join it? What type of work is of interests to you? What are your interests outside of work? Situational example of teamwork Situational example of dealing with people in formal and informal situations,,, good luck

D88

Hiya, just wondering about where you have applied from.. a fe of us in scotland applied at the beginning and so far, no-one has heard either way??

Ashraf

Hey all. I applied to the Accelerate development program through NatWest and got through the AC. However I was surprised by the very little information that is available on the programme itself. So made a few enquiries to the recruitment team -

1. RBS runs a similar program, how are they different from the one run by NatWest?

   - No one really knows. All I got was that they are run by different recruitment teams. However the roles are broadly spread around RBS Group.

2. Is this role business banking or corporate banking based? Although some might argue they are similar, coming from a banking background I know they can be very different.
  - Corporate banking

3. Is this role branch based or based in regional office/HQ?
  - They guessed it would be a mixture of both but didn't seem to be sure about it.

Thanks a lot everyone.

Cheers!

wannabeprofessional

any one went to AC? any tips about the competency based interview or anything will be hugely appreciated.

D88

Just out of curiosity, those who applied for the role through the rbs website rather than through natwest, have you had any update apart from your application is still under review?

Tigs41

How soon did those that had the telephone interview hear back from them with a response? I had mine last Friday and not heard anything, I understand that there may have been a delay because of the bank holiday but it now seems a little long to be waiting. Also wondering what locations people here have applied?

CH4LK3R

I was wondering the same thing Tigs41, i had my telephone interview on the tuesday after the bank holiday. I've applied for the midlands area, you?

Tigs41

Same for the Midlands, hopefully we will hear something either way soon .

kammy123

hey people has anyone been to the AC for accelerated programme if yes can you please give me some details about the interview ( what were the quetions, were they really technical or general) ,, presentation what was the topic and whether you selected it or you... and the role play ofcourse,, help will be highly appreciated,,

jahanzeb

Hi,

I have just been invited for a telephone interview for the GBM Markets Programme. I see form previous posts people have been very helpful in providing info on the content of the telephone interview but mainly for people applying to the Retail Scheme.

Has anyone else applied to the GBM Markets programme? Any experience or guidance you might have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Does RBS send out a logical reasoning test to all applicants or is it on a screening process?
I would be grateful if you could help me out at the earliest as I applied 2 weeks back and have got nothing yet!!
Thanks

juliad33

Hey sbuzz

Not sure, I applied yesterday and got the tests today. Since it's SHL I'm in no hurry to take them because I find I need to prepare for those a bit more than others. Contact them and see if you can find out what's up with your app...no harm in doing so =)

nojob88

Hi all,

Does anyone know what the difference in starting salary is for RBS Corporate/Institutional banking between London and Regional offices? Or is it the same in all locations?

ashwin2290

Hi,
Has anyone applied to the RBS finance programme?
I just completed the psychometric test, but have not received any links for the numerical. Any idea how long I have to wait to take the numerical?

shaha

Hey ashwin2290,

Have you done the numerical test yet? I have been invited to take the numerical test...if you hav done them, can you give me some feedback. Did you get to the telephone interview then? I am nervous. kindly help.

ashwin2290

hey shaha,

I have just got the invite to the numerical as well.
I will probably sit it today or on the 2nd, and will let you know how it is.

fc02

Hey, is anyone attending an AC on the 6th Jan? I'm attending for Group Comms.

nee87

@shaha

hey iv done the numerical test.

to put it into perspective.. im CRAP at maths, thoughts i did badly as i didnt even get to finish the questions but still passed it ! just practice the SHL examples and brush up on your percentages fractions etc and you'll be fine! its more about your accuracy on the answers rather than rushing to get it all completed!

good luck! =)

ashwin2290

how long did they take to respond after completing the test? Have you been invited to an ability centre?
I took mine yesterday, very standard shl stuff.

nee87

they took a few days to get back to me and invited me to a telephone interview!

the programme i applied to doesn't involve an ability centre but i have been invited to the final assessment centre

shaha

hey nee87,

Thanks for the info...am really grateful. I have passed the numerical test and invited for the telephone interview. I have applied for the business services leadership program. Congratulations on your advancement to the assessment center!!!.

Since you have given the telephone interview, which i know is competency based, can you tell me what questions you were asked in the telephone interview and how long was it ? Did you find any particular questions hard to answer ? I would be really appreciate your help =)

nee87

Congrats on passing it! Im sure your glad that part is over with, as i know i was! Lol

The telephone interview was very laid back and more to find out about you as an individual at that stage! I applied for the security and risk programme so i dont know if yours will be different?

Did you get an email from them confirming the interview with things you need to prepare?

shaha

Hey nee87,

I have been given the following instructions for the telephone interview.

"Your telephone interview will be competency based. It is designed to assess job-related behaviours (competencies) which are relevant to the job. You will be asked for examples of your previous experiences as a way to demonstrate that you have these competencies.

Preparation:
- Take time to think about your skills and achievements from all aspects of your experience
- Good examples include your involvement in summer work (bar, retail, customer service), societies, sports, events and charity work
- Think about times when you have had to work with difficult people, or solve a challenging problem
- Try to avoid using your dissertation or degree as examples

Conduct:
- Think of the Three Cs when conducting your interview:

Confident Be positive and engaging

Considered - Listen to the questions and the follow up questions. Clarify the question if uncertain

Convincing Give evidence to your statements. Do not just say I work well in a team. Explain where and how

- Talk in terms of I not We even in a team-working example

Structuring Examples:
- Use the STAR approach to structure your examples so that you are highlighting your role in the situation:

- Focus on the Action as we want to know how you deal with situations

And finally
Pace your answers
- Remember that even though you are on the phone to be professional and build rapport
- Be yourself "

Kindly let me know what you think and what questions did they exactly ask you in the telephone interview. It would be of great help. Its my first telephone interview so am really nervous and hope you did help me out through sharing your experience.

Thanks a lot mate =)

nee87

hey shaha,

the instructions i received were completely different as my telephone interview involved two stages, the first focused on why i wanted to do the programme and questions around my skills and abilities.

the second section, i had to prepare and answer questions on a topic i was passionate about what i considered to be one of my best achievements.

Judging by the email you've received, your interview is a lot more competency based than mine, and so unfortunately couldn't tell you what questions to expect!

you should definitely use the STAR structure when answering, and prepare to be asked questions like

tell me about a situation where you have:-
-overcome objections,
-exceeded expectations
-worked with difficult people
-used your own initiative
-worked together in a group to achieve an objective
etc

again, those are just examples of competencies i have been asked about in telephone interviews elsewhere and not the RBS.

if you google competency based questions in google there are may examples that come up and will give you a rough idea of what questions to prepare for!

Sorry couldn't be of more help!

shaha

Hey nee87,

Thanks a ton for the advice. I will definitely keep in mind what you said and research in google. However, I am just concerned about the 2nd part of your interview where you had to talk on a particular subject and then you would be asked questions on it. There is high possibility that such a question would be asked to me because my role involves a lot of communication and drive...as in...."What are you passion about? Tell me about it?" and of course there would be follow up questions on what I would say

Can you let me know how did you answer this question? I mean what did you talk about, how did you talk about it and what question were you asked after completing ? Also, How much time did it last, i mean how long did you speak for and then answered questions for?

Again, thanks a lot mate...you have been of great help...really appreciate it. :)

nee87

Hey shaha,

Your welcome! =)

as i was told to prepare to talk about a topic i was passionate about, i spoke about a hobby. on the back of this , they asked me questions about why i enjoy it, why it interested me, how i would promote it to others, what it has taught me about myself, how it makes me feel, how i would sell it to someone else etc.

the whole interview lasted about 30 minutes and i spent about 10 minutes on answering and talking about the topic.

You dont need to give an essay for every question asked, its more important, in my opinion, to be accurate and concise in what you say, making sure that you answer the question that is asked! i know from personal experience that the more i talk the more i go off topic ! but thats just me!

Hope that helps! =)

shaha

Hey nee87,

Thanks a ton for the info mate but should this hobby be any hobby or something business related like reading business magazines or reading in general or indoor games such as chess? I am into cars and research and collect as much info on them as in their history, technology, improvements from their previous versions and so on. Thats my hobby...i mean i can talk a lot about it since I am most passionate about it but there are other things I am into like gadgets, airplanes, reading articles, researching in general......but would this hobby be advisable to talk about in an interview ?

How did you frame the answer to this question as in like the flow of your answer? Did the interviewer stop you before you completed talking or he heard you without interrupting you? This will help me frame the answer to a limited time so that I wouldn't be interrupted in between by the interviewer. I think his interrupting to stop me would be negative....right? I mean, I can go on forever since the motor industry is huge...lol ! am confused :S

nee87

hey shaha,

to give you an idea, i talked about henna/mehndi body art as i done that for the past 10 years! in the email i received, it stating it could be of any topic, not just business related.

and the interviewer didn't once stop me. you have to bare in mind that they are typing everything you say so you may get asked to slow down so repeat things. and i really wouldn't worry about it too much as you may be thinking into it too much! It literally flowed like a conversation rather than a question and answer session! If you do get asked about it, just be yourself and answer honestly! if you get stopped, it doesn't necessarily mean that its negative, just that you've answered the question to a standard that they require and to move on! or else you'd be there all day! lol

you have a few things that you can draw on so im sure you will be fine! Judging from your email, id focus on the competency side of it and prepare for that rather than stressing out over the passion topic! =)

shaha

Hey nee87,

Wow...cool....now atleast, thanks to you, I am prepared if this question comes up ! And yeah, now I know that they would be typing so I would speak slowly from the start to avoid any change of sentences...you know...I would be too engrossed in talking that I would forget what I had said earlier if they ask me to repeat....geez! Thanks a ton mate....Best of luck for the assessment center...I am sure you will get the job....I will let you know about my progress as well. Thanks for all the advice...you've been of great help =)

nee87

Hey shaha,

Your welcome! =) and thanks! hopefully, the snow will all clear up in Edinburgh by the time my A/C comes around! let us know how its goes, as no doubt there will plenty of people in the same boat! =)

shaha

Hey nee87!

Yup mate, we are all in the same boat but I think we would be fine because if there is a problem I am sure they will adjust and be considerate due to the weather conditions. Lets hope for the best :)

On a different note, I got an message today that they have moved me into my second choice of program after reviewing my application and previous work experience and I was asked to rebook my telephone interview. Now its on the 20th of Jan instead of the 17th and I have got a different format for the telephone interview. It is as follows :

" There are two sections to the interview which you will need to prepare for.

The first section will involve talking about the programme that you have applied to and how it fits with your own career aspirations and experience. It is important to note that if you do not demonstrate the level of understanding required from a graduate applicant then unfortunately we will not be able to progress your application on this occasion.

The second section will involve two questions designed to give us a better understanding of you as an individual. These questions will relate to:

- A topic that you feel passionate about (this can be any topic and does not have to be business related).

- A personal achievement that you feel proud of

You will need to think about these in advance of the telephone interview as you will be expected to talk about them in some detail. "

Is this the same as your telephone interview? I am very quite of what I have to say in the second part of the interview thanks to you but don't know what I will be asked in the first part. Can you let me know what you were asked in your first part of your interview?

I have prepared answers for the following questions if I am asked about them for the first part. They are...

1] Tell me about yourself
2] Why RBS?
3] Why this program and how it matches with your career aspirations?

For the second part am going to talk about my passion for cars and achievement in the business planning project where we won a 1000 pounds prize for our business plan. It was a group work but it is an achievement, isn't it?....though technically not an individual achievement but a group one...am I to talk about what I did and how I was involved or talk about it in group terms or both?

I would really appreciate your guidance mate. Kindly help me out. =)

shaha

Hey nee87,

  • Am sorry, what I meant was..."I am quite sure of what I have to say in the second part of the interview thanks to you but don't know what I will be asked in the first part."
nee87

hey shaha,

yes that was the format my interview followed.

You just need to do some reading up on the programme and what aspects interest you about it and why you want to do that particular programme and be prepared to answer questions about what skills you have which will make you a good candidate.

The second section topics you have sound good! just remember to focus on the things you did rather than the group as they will only be interested in hearing about your contributions!

the questions you have prepared for will help you as they pretty much cover what i was asked!

shaha

Hey nee87,

Thanks for the info mate....m glad....I feel prepared now. Hope I pass my telephone interview and give you only the good news...lol. Have you booked your assessment center yet? If so, where is it scheduled?

Also, the second question asks me about my achievement and I have a good answer for it... but can you tell me, if you remember, the follow up questions you were asked?

Also, were you asked any business related questions such as Hows rbs doing currently? What is its share price? What can you do to improve the current state of the company? Who are its competitors and so on?

Where you given the chance to ask the interviewer any questions you might have had?

Again thanks for your advice.... :)

lavajyami

Hi all,

I have a very basic question: does anyone know how long the RBS group graduate schemes last? I think its 2 years but havent found solid info anywhere....

shaha

hey lavajyami,

If your program includes studying towards a qualification like CFA, ACCA or CIMA it would take three years to complete the program. This is standard. However, most other programs would probably be of two years leading to a senior role on completion.

Hope this helps =)

lavajyami

Thanks a lot shaha. BTW where did you get this info? I looked everywhere in the internet.

There isnt much info on graduate scheme itself, only about the company...

Thanks again

Dreamer

Hi nee87,

Can you please advice me what program u applied to? I’ve applied to the technology graduate program and have recently passed my telephone interview and they said they’ll organise an assessment center as soon as they are next scheduled. Since I’ve got the time, I might as well do my own research and practice.

Just want to check if you applied to the same program and have given your assessment center yet? And can u advise me on the activities for the day please? There are the standard activities like group exercise, interview, but I want to know the exact activities for the tech grad scheme assessment center.

Will sincerely appreciate the help!

Many thanks! :)

shaha

Hey lavajyami,

The programs where in one has to do a qualification is three years because these qualifications require one to have three years work experience to get their full membership. So if any graduate program requires passing these qualifications, the program will be of three years at least.

Any other program would have other minor examinations but would atleast be of two years minimum if not three. Gap year placements or sandwich program placements last one year but a graduate program would definitely be more than a year.

Graduate programs are there for graduates to know and understand the work functions of the company in detail and build up managerial skills. Upon completion of the graduate program and getting the qualification you can advance to a managerial position beginning with may be an assistant manager. Hope this helps :)

lavajyami

thanks shaha just passed the tel interview.
Now another wait to see if I get through to AC.

shaha

Hey Lavajyami,

Congratulations on passing the telephone interview....I have mine on the 20th....hope it goes well....

lavajyami

yeah hope it goes well. fingers crossed :)

Hello People - I had my telephone interview for corporate banking today and it went on well. I got an email sometime ago which said that I successfully meet the benchmark and all that. But, it also said, "While we are unable to guarantee an Assessment Centre place at this stage, we will keep you updated on your progress." What is this suppose to mean? Has anyone received such an email before? Thank a lot in advance!!

Shaf

Here's what it said, "Your application will now be shortlisted for progression to the next stage of our selection process, which will be an Assessment Centre." When do you normally receive a response after this email?

mksap5

Hello everyone!

I applied for the Marketing and Innovation Programme on the 18th of December. Since then, I have done the competency tests and last week, I got a message congratulating me on passing the tests and saying they are considering how to proceed with my application. Anyone else got such a response after the tests? Still waiting to hear from them as its been 8 days since the last message they sent and getting a little jittery now!

Thank you so much!

bax

hey, anyone has offers yet?

nee87

still waiting to hear back! its killing me!

what about you @ bax

Shaf

Fellas - I wrote to RBS UK today asking for a status update. They replied saying that they do not have any update as yet. FYI., I had my telephonic interview on 18th Jan and got a response on the same day that they were happy and would consider my application for assessment center. Please let me know if any of you receive offers. Thanks

lavajyami

same with me. passed telephone interview and havent heard anything since. Worrying thing is that time is running out for this years applications...

Hey guys,

I had my telephone interview on the 20th Jan for the Business Services Leadership Program and then got an email from RBS that I had passed the telephone interview and met the benchmark for further assessment which is the assessment center. However, after the telephone interview I was explained how they would proceed with my application and what the assessment center would be like and I was invited to ask questions related to the job or anything else. I asked him a couple of questions regarding things which were unclear on the graduate program description on their website like location, projects, how will I be assessed during the program and other stuff.

After this he said that they receive very high quality applications and not all applications who pass the telephone interview go to the assessment center and that they were very clear about that. I further asked him then who goes to the assessment center and he said they that they shortlist you and review your application again as in like CV, test scores, work experience and the answers they received in the telephone interview. I am shortlisted for further assessment like you all are and I guess we just have to wait for further correspondence.

In my previous application for internship I gave the tests and was asked to wait for consideration even though I had passed the tests and after a few weeks I got an email from them that they had filled all their positions for the internship and would not be able to progress with my application and was told to wait for 6 months before I made an application again. I don't want to disappoint you guys but this was what I was told and there is nothing we can do but wait. However, for internships the vacancy is limited...I think.

If we email them, they are just going to say that the application is under consideration but however we should message them to atleast let them know that we all continue to remain interested in the position....lol. I don't know what they are upto but I have kept my fingers crossed for my assessment center.

Hope this is helpful to you all =)

princetongirl

Thanks for that information shaha...I applied for the same graduate scheme last year and made it to the AC but this was not how they worked last year so I was a bit concerned.

I gave my interview on the 4th of Jan this year and got the same reply as everyone else...As you said, we can just wait and see what happens...Good luck to all those waiting:)

Shaf

Thanks Shaha for your post! I'm still waiting to hear after my telephone interview on 18th Jan. It just said, I passed the interview. I wrote them once but they said they dont have an update yet. Not sure if I'm still in the race for AC!

@All - Has anybody else got a AC confirmation? How long did you have to wait before getting a AC shortlist confirmation?

dimples8

Hello all,

I just finished the rbs uk retail banking interview and am so nervous, the guy was really
nice and i was told that i would get a response within 24 hrs if i was successful or not.

Pls was it really that quick to get a response from rbs telephone interview

trading-baby

I have applied for GBM Trading 2011 (London) summer internship in early Jan. Still no call, no invitation for phone interview. Just 2 stupid emails saying thanks for waiting we are still considering your application, but cannot guarantee a place in the AC.

Anybody had TRADING phone interviews yet? Any TRADING ACs yet? Any offers?

Trading baby.

Shaf

Fellas - I just received an email which said I'm invited for the assessment center :) Anybody else who got it?

Would anyone know about the visa thing? I'm an Indian currently studying in Germany, what category of visa should I apply for? Work or just general travel visa? Appreciate your help!!

Tuseef

Has anyone been invited for an AC for business services leadership ?

Thanks

lavajyami

I passed my tel interview more than a month ago and still havent heard anything. I applied for group sourcing and vendor management programme...

Shaf

Anybody attending the assessment center on 21st March 2011? I've been invited to attend this one.

Has anyone attended the one in February? I'd really appreciate if you could provide an insight to that.

Regards,
Shaf

dan1

does anyone know what they will ask at the assessment day for the easter insight internship for Corporate and Institutional Banking

dougdoug

I have had a telephone interview for the GBM Retail programme. The interviewer seemed to be from a call center and did not understand anything. Moreover, he was over convinced with his own ideas and did not wish to hear mine. He typed in all my answers incorrectly. I don't have a say in all this, but who's taking all the loss?

Karelia

I know this is a weird question, but I hope someone can help.
I've applied to a graduate scheme with RBS in the UK and I am about to have a phone interview. The thing is I am currently in the USA where I just received my degree.
Do you think if invited to an Assessment Centre, I can attend one in the USA although I am applying to the UK? I am hoping I can save the cost of the flight fare and RBS has an office here in Chicago, but is it possible..?
I hope someone has some insight. Thanks a lot and good luck! :)

dan1

well i think you should use your initative and contact RBS and find out rather than asking here

Karelia

Oh thank you for that advice, I couldn't think of it myself! If you do not have anything helpful to say, then don't say anything at all.
Of course I'll ask, however, provided that they have so many applicants, the answer will likely be no, that is why I asked if someone has had a similar experience.

shaha

Hey!

@ Karelia: The assessment procedure in USA, I think, is very different from UK and made to suit US graduates and job market. Hence, you would probably have to come to UK for your assessment center should you pass the telephone interview since you want to work here. They would, I think, reimburse you with a limited amount for your travelling expenses but not in full though :(. You can get better information from them regarding this by emailing them through the message center in your online application. They will reply pretty quickly but if its urgent then please contact them by telephone, that would be better. Good luck with your telephone interview...=)

Anyone got the invitation to attend the assessment center for the business services leadership program?? I passed my telephone interview on the 20th of January but am still waiting to get the invitation for AC :(. I emailed them on the 21st of Feb regarding any update and they replied that they are still sorting assessment center dates and stuff and cannot provide me with an confirmed update....I have kinda grown tired of waiting :(. Any advice, suggestions regarding this matter, kindly let me know =)

Shaf

@Karelia: I'm attending the assessment center tomorrow for Corporate & Institutional Banking. I live in Frankfurt but RBS made my travel and accommodation arrangements. I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't do it for you.

Good luck!

Karelia

Thank you! Good luck to you too!!

Karelia

Thank you! Hope you get an invitation!

princetongirl

Shaha...I had my tel interview for RBS Retail Leadership on the 4th of Jan and I am still waiting...I emailed them in the beginning of March and they came back with the same standard reply.

I know that during this time there have been couple of AC's and people have been invited for them and offers have been made. So my guess is that, RBS are keeping a couple of back ups. In case they don't get as many candidates as they want, then they contact us otherwise they say "you have not met the benchmark..bla bla". Otherwise, there was no point in making us wait this long. I have attending a couple of AC's in the past and it has never taken this long to reach to a decision.

shaha

Hey princetongirl,

Many thanks for the information. May be you are right but its just that so many graduates apply for a role that it makes me think do they really need back ups? I believe that they should say either a straight 'Yes' or 'No'.....but whats happening is quite unprofessional !

On the other hand, since you have reached assessment centers stage in the past, you must have had a good telephone interview with RBS...I mean you had an idea what they did ask you and how you should answer them and stuff and you got selected but still waiting. It may be that they are giving kinda less importance to these leadership roles than roles on their investment banking arm. This was my first telephone interview and I had made lot of errors during answering initially but I passed my interview.

This is just my opinion....just staying positive. When you said some people got offers, did you mean specifically in the same role as you have applied for or other roles like corporate banking ? If its the same role maybe you can ask them weather they are inviting people on the basis of a waiting list or weather they have ranked you compared to other graduates.

princetongirl

Hey Shaha,

I have attended the RBS Retail Leadership AC last year but they called me within a week after I gave my tel interview. Nothing like what is happening this year so yeah, it is really disappointing to make you wait this long.

And I was talking about people getting AC's and offers in the Retail Leadership Scheme...Don't have much idea about other schemes. I guess we can just keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best!

mehdiaj

Hi, anyone know what kind of psychometric tests they use for the RBS retail leadership programme? I havnt done one before, so wanted to do some practise ones before i do the actual one. Also is it just the psychometric tests, is there an online numerical test to do after? as all i can see is psychometric tests...

if you have a link to any online tests that are similar then let me know please
thanks
Med

Karelia

Here are some links to free practice tests:
http://students.efinancialcareers.co.uk/numerical_test.htm
http://www.kent.ac.uk/careers/tests/mathstest2.htm
http://www.numericaltesthelp.com/

Someone posted other links above, you can try to find that post.

Don't worry, the test is easy, try not to think of the time limit, most likely you won't have time for the last 2-3 questions, it's more important to work accurately and quickly. Good luck!

mehdiaj

Thanks for that 'Karelia' they are really good tests!!

if anyone has any free online psychometric tests that would be much appreciated, as I think the Retail Leadership Programme is online psychometric test only?

Mehdiaj

Shaf

Folks - I've been offered an internship in Aberdeen for Corporate & Institutional banking. Anybody else who would be joining this prog?

Karelia

Hey shaf, congratulations!
How long after your interview you got an invitation to an Assessment Centre? I passed my interview about 10 days ago and I am still under consideration :(
Thanks!

Shaf

Hey Karelia,

Thanks a lot!

My telephone interview was on 18th Jan and received an invitation for AC only on 15th Feb. I did send 2 reminders to them while I was waiting and they just said under consideration. Just be patient and hopefully things will work out as you expect. Good luck!

lboro11

I think it is only around 50%..I didnt get that far in answering questions and I still passed.

lboro11

Hey for those of you who have attended your AC I would really appreciate some information on what the situational interview was like?

mrunner

I had a telephone interview for the RBS ACCELERATE PROGRAMME today. It lasted 20 mins and covered motivations and competency. The questions included:

Why RBS?
What do you know about RBS?
What do you know about the programme?
What's your hobbies?
What's your strengths and you favourite subject at school/college?

The competency was providing an example of working in a team and providing an example of when working in a team was difficult.

The interviewer said there was 52 positions in total for all locations.

Hope this helps someone out.

jadeblack1884

Hey Iboro1,

Like how many questions did you answer to have passed the test and how was the test like 'cos I have one to write for the accelerate programme.

Cheers.

peter.wombwell

Hi Guys,

I've applied for the RBS accelerate program for the 'south west' section. I passed the tests, and had a telephone interview on 23rd May. However, im yet to hear anything back, and when i log in to check my account, it just says 'your application is under consideration'.

Im wondering how long it'll take to hear back from them, and if anyone else who has had a telephone interview has had a response?

Thanks Guys...

peter.wombwell

I got into the Assesment centre!!
any advice for next stage?

93BN - it took them less than a week to get back to me.
thanks pete

93BN

Well done mate.. What date was your interview? Surely they will get back to me either way?

mrunner

93BN

I had my telephone interview about three weeks ago for the London office and my application is also under consideration. I have managed to get something else I was applying for though.

All the best with the rest of your application.

np0385

This is about the Accelerate Prog. I passes the Numerical Exam and the Telephone interview. My interview was on a friday and I got an email from RBS saying i've passed the telephone interview next monday. On tuesday I was invited for a AC. I was wondering do we have to do a Numerical exam on the AC day?

peter.wombwell

Hi,
Does anyone have any suggestions for things to revise or prepare for the rbs accelerate program assement centre?
Thanks!
Pete

Bmbrand

I received an email on the 18th may saying I'd met the requirements of the telephone interview for Corp banking and am still waiting to hear back. I emailed last week asking for information and they just said 'we will be in touch soon'. Everyone seems to have heard back now if it's good news so am I to assume I haven't got through ? This seems so disorganised and unfair!

93BN

BmBrand.. They have done exactly the same with me, and I'm still waiting to hear back.

e-babe

Has anyone gone for the Retail Leadership Programme Assessment day recently? Are there additional numerical test there?

The hand out on the application process is not very clear on this. It just states that there will be:
- Group Exercises
- Role Plays
- Competency Based Interviews
- Presentations
- In-Tray Exercises
- Business Reports

Thanks!

ARYAN4a

I had my assesment day on the 13th July and was told they had one more day of assessments the next week and they are deciding. I have applied for the London position.

I havent heard anything back from them yet but I did call them on monday (01/08) and they said that they are still going through all the applicants and will let me know how I have done a.s.a.p.

Really really really hope I get through and the anticipation for the phone call is intense!!

Good luck to everyone too!

ps. Can't wait to meet all of you!

matthew1989

Congrats to everyone who got in.

Ive been accepted into the programme too. Was informed a contract would be sent out last week, but it hasnt arrived yet.

Regardless, has anyone been asked for references? Because they havnt asked them from me yet, im guessing there could be a form in the contract pack requesting them.

Good luck to everyone still waiting for results

peter.wombwell

im the same, told contract would come last week but hasnt come just yet.
seems the recruitment team are slower than usual proccessing all the contracts etc.

I haven't been asked for references, dont think we need them now we have been successful.

pete

Jackholmes2

Hi,

Jack

david44

Hey guys,

I have been accepted on to the programme too!

Jack, noway it's David I was at the AM assessment on the 13th too, good luck mate!

I haven't heard anything regarding the meeting in September but hey, should do.

I had to request a new proof of address from the bank, so it'll be 2 weeks before I see my contract...

David

Jackholmes2

haha you alright mate? when did you find out you got it? and did they just ring you?

I really hope I find out today as I'm starting to get a bit nervous as everyone else seems to have found out!

Jack

gent09

Cheers mate

HannahW

Well done guys, fingers crossed Jack!

Who is based in London?

Hannah

david44

Jack - I found out 2 days ago, yeah just a random phone call missed it at first was in the bath! Yeah all is going well mate yourself? I never got an email which everyone is stating.

Oliver - Yep London buddy. I will search for you. I will also send you a message with my Facebook in just incase I don't find you.

Hannah - I am!

And for anyone who wants a chat on Facebook just message me asking for it/give me yours; it would be nice to speak to everyone!

David

Jackholmes2

Right just rung them up trying to find an answer as I'm currently at work and all I can think about is have I got through or not!! She said that all the assessment centres are finished now and that she will get Jessica Lilley to phone me back soon just letting me know when I should find out how I have done (As she was the last person to email me)

But she said that everyone is finding out soon so there isn't anything to worry about, but the suspense is just killing me ATM!

Hope to see you guys all soon : )

Jack

peter.wombwell

hey,
i just got an email with an AFA attatched. basically a written application for RBS going through all my referees, ethnicity and account details etc.
Take it thats all standard procedure?
It says mandatory for all rbs applicants and selectees.
pete

david44

Pete - I have just done mine, so I guess so!

David

peter.wombwell

ace, you know at the end, think its s14 it says proof of this and that and take it to the interview. Do you attatch those things on? or leave it?
confused me cause the interviews been and gone lol
pete

david44

Well I handed all of my stuff in at the interview if you didn't I believe you have to take it to any branch of RBS/Natwest etc to be authorised. If in doubt best bet would be to phone them.

David

peter.wombwell

yeh i done that a wee while ago just confused me lol.
You have the number? i dont have extension on it?

To All,

Firstly, congratulations to the people that have been accepted! top work!.. Im still waiting for a reply, however, i have a big twist in my application! I passed the telephone interview, but did not receive an invite to the assessment centre. I contacted RBS twice, and they told me not to worry about that and await further instruction. I contacted them again a week ago, as they did not reply and told me to keep waiting, and I was told a conclusion is being finalised and they will get back soon. surely i cant get in without going to an assessment centre? Even though I was told not to worry about that as they are still considering me in final selection?! Im sorry if you're all confused.. but I have no idea what position I stand in?!

kindy1993

Accelerate programme - Manchesterrrrrrrrrrrr :)))

I was going to create a mini facebook group for all us successful candidates!

If there is a trip to London in September look forward to seeing all you guys!

I have never been so anxious and terrified about opening emails from RBS after the assessment day centre!

Well done guys! :D

Hi I had my phone interview for the RBS UK Retail scheme today and I really feel it went badly. I really appreciate it if someone could answer a few questions or comment whether they had a similar experience.

-How long did they take to get back to you after your phone interview?
-How long was your interview? Mine was around 40 minutes.
-Did the interviewer really have to dig deep within your response and prompt you?
-Were you asked for 3 facts about RBS? I was expecting them to but they did not.

Hi, I have just received an invitation for the telephone interview, seems like I have just missed out on this round of interviews. How did your interview's go? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Fiyin_Faajs

Hey. Had my interview today. Lasted just about 30mins. Dont really know how it went. He asked about what I know about RBS, followed by what I knw about the programme. He then went on to what I am passionate about followed by my greatest achievement. Was basically the areas contained in the email. Said I wud get a response in 24-48 hrs. Hoping its good!

Joepearce22

Ah sounds fairly straightforward then. Just booked mine, not until 22nd November unfortunately (coincidentally my birthday!). Guess you guys will be one step ahead the whole way. Good luck, which program have you applied for? Edit: Just seen your program in above comment, same here.

graduatese89

Hi Guys

Don't worry about when your interview is, some of the assessment centres are not held until next year and so the timing of your interview will not affect this!

Hope this helps.

MihaiBuda

I applied for Wealth Management and got my interview in a few hours.
Thanks for the post Fiyin. Will keep up to date.

Mihai

graduatese89

Has any one had a response for the wealth management programme?

tf4v07

Hey I just spoke to a guy at RBS, and he confirmed the ACs for Wealth Management won't be kicking off until the New Year

graduatese89

Thanks tf4vor7, I know it sucks right as I assume most people have exams come Jan/Feb! Did you get through the telephone interview?

financegrad

hi, just wondering if you got invited to the AC for Corporate Chief Operating Office or if anyone else did? Has anyone heard back yet? I have heard of people in BarCap getting an offer later on the same day of the AC.

vickib

Hi guys!

I've applied for the Retail Banking Program at RBS and my telephone interview's on the 29th November. If anyone's had theirs already some feedback would be amazing!

I was particularly interested in the format, in the e-mail they sent me I was told it would be two sections, one about why RBS basically and another with two questions about something I'm proud of and something I'm passionate about. Does it stick to this pretty much? And are there any questions that caught anyone out? Any interesting information about RBS that you think they may have been looking for?

Wow, that's a lot of writing, hope some of you can be bothered to read it all and help haha!

Thanks!

jaybeetz

Hi guys,

I've just been invited to the RBS UK Retail Graduate Assessment Centre - anyone else joining me in Edinburgh on the 30th of November?

xtreemneo

Hello everyone,
Hope your telephone interview went well.

I am booked in for one on 30th Nov. I have applied for Technology services.
Could you please describe the kind of questions and how long did it last for?

I was told by email that it is a two stage interview and two questions in the second stage.

Could you please give an insight into the telephone interview?
Which prog did you apply for, what kind of questions were in the first stage.
Did they stick to the two questions they have sent through email?

I would be really grateful for your help!

Cheers

jaybeetz

Hey,

I jjust replied to your PM , hope it helps!

graduatese89

Hi Vicki

The interview is fine, I had mine a few weeks ago and it followed the format of the email exactly!!

Good luck

pop123

Hi everyone,

I applied for the Security & Risk Programme (part of Business Services) with RBS Group. Now I was invited to take a psychometric test with questions related to "my behaviour for the future position", that is what they said in the email.

Did anyone take this test before who applied for Security & Risk?

Do I understand it correctly that this is NOT a numerical/logical reasoning test?

A friend of mine applied for RBS Markets and he had to do a logical reasoning test, so I guess they use different tests depending on the division/programme you apply for?

Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to hear from you!

xtreemneo

Hello pop123, I have applied for technology services..
I received a similar email.. They are behavioural tests..

Like how we behave in a given situation.. Well more sort of I am team player.. I dont encourage knowing or getting along with others.. You have to agree on a scale...

If we clear that we move on to numerical one.. Well.. this factor may depend on the prog.

Hope it helps..

Cheers.

pop123

hi xtreemneo,

thanks for your comment!

did you already take the behavioural test? how long does it take?
cheers

pop123

hi xtreemneo,

thx for your comment. did you already do the behavioural test? how long does it take?

cheers

xtreemneo

As far as I can remember, The behavioral tests were not timed.
there were around 5 to 6 pages full of questions to agree on a scale.

It should probably take 25 min to 35 min depending on one's comprehending ability..

Hope it helps.. cheers

Hi guys I've just had my telephone interview for Property Services grad scheme, the interview followed the format in the email exactly. It was quite straight forward. He gave me some feedback he said that I was passionate and knowledgable but said that on the first question "why did you choose this programme and how does it fit your career aspirations" That I went on and told him everything talking for about ten minutes solidly he said "your answers were excellent and you covered everything that I was planning in asking you so you saved me a job but in future remember that it is supposed to be a 2-way interview" oooops I just got an email saying

"Thank you for making the time available to participate in the Telephone Interview.

After reviewing your responses, we are very pleased to inform you that you have successfully met the benchmark for your selected programme.

Your application will now be under consideration for progression to the final stage of our selection process, which will be an Assessment Centre."

My advice would be to swat up massively on the company and your programme, there are reports and things that are available if you delve deep into their website with a lot of information, learn it all and try not to read answers the conversation needs to be natural so that you come across as confident and knowledgable!

Good luck y'all!

asdf1234

Has anyone applied to the chief operating office at RBS and have been to an assessment centre? I have one coming up and any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks

ahmadkarim

Hey I applied for an internship in operations Rbs IBD London. Have an assesment centre coming up on 8th of december. Can I get some information on finanical appraisal test and situational judgement tests btw the telephonic interview was exactly like the email pretty straightforward so dont worry.
Thanks

tf4v07

@graduatese89 - my telephone interview is this week so fingers crossed. Did you get through to the AC?

lola222

Hi everyone,

I have applied to Wealth Management graduate programme and I have passed the online test in early October. But I keep receiving this e-mail every week since then:

Thank you again for your application to The Royal Bank of Scotland Group Graduate Development Programme.

We appreciate that you have been waiting to hear further news about the progress of your application, so we are writing to update you.

We have received a large number of high quality applications for our programmes, and will complete further benchmarking before finalising whether we will invite you to the next stage. We will contact you in due course to confirm how we will proceed.

We would like to thank you for your understanding so far, and apologise for the delay.

Is anyone receiving this e-mail? I can see that some people already got the interview at November start for the same programme I applied for. So Im getting a little confused...

graduatese89

@ tf4v07

good luck you will do great! I got an email confirming I had passed the telephone interview after half an hour, but that it doesn't mean you automatically get through to the AC as they shortlist everyone! So fingers crossed am just waiting to hear back now :)

Jess85

Hi Lola222,
I have applied to the Global Banking and Markets graduate programme.
As you did, I passed the online test in october and I received this email:

"Thank you again for your application to The Royal Bank of Scotland graduatedevelopment programme.

After reviewing your responses at the online testing stage, we are pleased to inform you that your performance has met our requirements.

We are now short listing candidates for progression to the next stage, which will be a face-to-face assessment.

Because we receive many high quality applications, and spaces at the next round are limited, please be aware that we are unable to confirm at this stage whether we will be inviting you to the next stage."

After that I haven't received any comunication from RBS and I am still waiting... dunno what this can mean...

Did anyone have the same problem?

Dave Camel-run

Hi everyone,

RBS is fuck all !!!

lawgrad2009

Hi All

I have a telephone interview confirmed for the UK Retail graduate scheme scheduled for January. Has anybody else applied for this scheme specifically and, if so have you completed your telephone interview yet?

Also, does anybody have any advice regarding how to answer the telephone interview questions. In the e-mail I received it stated I would have to answer a question regarding a topic I am passionate about as well as an achievement I am proud of. I can think of a couple of examples, but was wondering what sort of examples everybody else used when answering?

Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance to anyone who may respond :). I just want to be prepared as possible.

Thanks all!

sport25

Has anyone heard about ACs for 2012 yet? I passed the telephone interview 3 weeks ago and still no word.

tf4v07

Same here. They said to me it wasn't definite you would get through to AC if you passed the telephone interview though

sport25

Just received an email today that I made it to the assessment centre! Anyone else attending next week?

keenan1490

Hiya! Just had my telephone interview for UK retail and thought I would let you guys know. This website helped me so much.

As people have said before it really does follow the email.
They started by asking
Why I applied for UK Retail and how did it fits with my personality and career aspirations?
What I knew about the UK Retail scheme?

So make sure you know what the next two years would involve!!

Then they asked me why RBS?
What did I know about RBS?
Lastly they asked how my degree would help with this career?
They then said that they were going to look over my answers to this section and that I would only proceed to the next question if I had shown enough knowledge about RBS and the scheme.

Then you basically have a chat about the topics you should have prepared, something you are passionate about and something you are proud of. I talked about Sport as something I was passionate about, they just asked casual questions they what I play, What was my favourite, do I still play now. Just random stuff.
Then at the end they just asked a couple of casual competency questions
'If I was trying to convince someone to join my sport what would I do?'
What do I think I have gained from this?'

Finally was the topic you are proud of, they just let me talk for this one.
Couple of casual competency questions at the end
What were the biggest difficulties I faced?
What had I learnt?

Hope this helps!! x

kat182

sport25 - hi! I just got a call today inviting me to an assessment centre next wednesday. slightly excited. Bit confused about what will happen though as there are so many different formats?
What programme have you applied for?

sport25

Hi kat182. Congrats! I applied for Business &Commercial Banking. I too am confused. I wonder if we will be required to do the numeracy tests again?? What programme have you applied for?

kat182

I have applied for business services leadership.

Looking at the help section on the website there is a document that says what t expect, and that the assessment day may include some or all of these activities, and there wasnt anything specific about numerical testing!

That's the bit I am most nervous about, as even SHL couldn't have prepared me for the online test, such a different format to what I expected! But passed it so just have to really hope Wednesday goes well!

So nervous, 4days to prepare alongside my uni work, should be fun!

toms1234

Hi, had my telephone interview for Business and Commercial banking (Birmingham) yesterday. This website was so useful as the structure of the interview was so similar to what is mentioned here. Make sure you prepare well for the second section of the interview as they are interested in how it all relates back to the scheme etc. Fingers crossed I will get through to the assessment centre!

Good luck to everyone else!

mfang

hi blackpool88, how did you go with your assessment center? Could you share some experience of that day?? Many thanks!

kat182

Hello all.

Figured as the website has helped me a lot I would share my assessment day experience.

We were sent a document with advise on how to prepare,
Simply the day involved a group discussion, interview and individual meeting (aka role play).

Group discussion was 40mins where each team member had to propose an idea (you were ech given an idea/process) to implement. As a group you had to chose th best option for wht you were aiming to do, with a particular budget.

Interview-typically competency and situational interview, tell me a time when/ imagine you are.

Role play-given time to plan for a meeting wit. Fictional team member, then you role played he meeting.

Hope this makes sense. All very simple tasks. There was no ABLE test or business services the yr. no idea if that is the same for other programmes!

Hey said I would hear by Monday (yesterday) but till no word!

kat182

P.s. bad typing + spelling s the iPads fault!

shv

Hi
Thanks Kat182 for your post on the AC. I've applied for the UK retail grad scheme, does anyone know what happens at the AC for that specific programme?? Is it the same as above?

Good Luck everyone!

soontograd

Hi,

The Retail Assessment Centre is comprised of 3 parts:

A Group Exercise where you will be assessed on your ability to work with others to reach a common goal.
A Situational Task where you have 20 minutes to come up with a solution to a well-detailed problem.
Finally an interview based on RBS core behaviours.

My advice would be to make sure you know a lot about the company and where you would like to go in your career. Also to ensure you think about how best to handle certain situations such as working with difficult employees without causing upset.

Hope this helps!

shv

Thanks for the advice! I have the AC in a few weeks..... getting a little nervous now!
