Mazars Application Process

Application and Interview Process

The firm has a five step application process:

  • Online application
  • Review
  • Personal interview
  • Selection interview
  • Decision

Online Application

Online application requires you to decide which training scheme you wish to apply for and complete an online application form.

Review

Once Mazars have reviewed your application you will be asked to complete online numerical reasoning & verbal reasoning tests. The tests are provided by PSL/Kenexa.

Most people will need to practise the numerical reasoning test to pass it. Pages 7-23 of this book may prove extremely useful in preparing for any of the numerical tests.

Interview

If your application is successful, the next stage is a one-to-one interview. This will be a one-hour interview with a manager or member of the graduate recruitment team.

At the beginning of your first interview you will be given an analytical exercise to read and discuss. The remainder of the interview will consist of questions based around the key skills that Mazars feel are important in the role that you have applied for.

Selection Interview

This consists of:

If feedback from your interview is good, you will be invited to come and meet the team at your chosen office. You will be interviewed by a partner and asked to do some team and written exercises.

Group Exercise

The group exercise is relatively straightforward. You will be presented with a scenario that you have to make a group decision on. You will have about 15 minutes to read and consider it and then 30 minutes to discuss and reach a decision. It is more important that everyone participates rather than what the final decision is. The most important thing is to make sure that you express your views but also listen to what everyone else is saying. You need to be able to persuade others to your point of view also notice when others have good points of view.

In-tray exercise

Some other companies will do this electronically but with Mazars it is paper based.

There were 3 exercises to do:
  • Basic emails (prioritise them)
  • Making programs
  • Responding to a memo

The task itself is not challenging but there is extreme time pressure. It is important that you spend as much time writing as possible, and focus on getting things down within the time limit.

Lunch

Usually the assessment process takes place in the morning and is followed by a buffet lunch. This is informal and allows an opportunity to meet the partners and managers, and ask questions about Mazars.

Decision

You will be informed within two weeks if your interviews have been successful.

CJE

Hi Guys,

I have recently applied to Mazars to work on their Chartered Accountant Training Scheme. I have had my initial application accepted and passed the online tests and received a phone call from the Mazars office inviting me to interview. However this is to be a telephone interview, which does not match up with anything I can find on Wikijob, or on the Mazars website.

Has anyone else had experience of this? Any advice or heads up about the type of questions asked would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Chim

Hi CJE,

I am in a similar position, I recieved an email inviting me for a telephone interview for a graduate role in Manchester, I passed the online tests too.

Maybe it is in place of the first interview.

macers

CJE or Chim, can I ask what the online tests are like? I've just got an email invitation to sit them and don't have much experience with these things. Any preparation tips?

Cheers

Chim

Hey Macers,

They include a verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. From what I remember, they were not too difficult but again the time pressure is there, but I would recommend you take enough time to answer the questions correctly (i.e don't guess).

Wikijob has some help for these tests. Although, there should be more online.

rooksx

Is there anyone who went to the Mazars assessment day on 22 June in London who is still waiting to hear back? I am!

RAAR

Hi rooksx, I have got an assessment day coming up, can you please give me some info what the partner questions were? and what exercises the in tray task involved? Any advice would be much appreciated.

rooksx

Surprisingly, the partner interview involves yet more competency-based questions. He had what looked like a standardised questionnaire to complete so I'm sure you'll get them. Usual sort of competency questions: team-work, time where you've had to be aware of how your behaviour affects others, time you dealt with setbacks, etc. Then I got asked the usual questions about why the firm, why the job etc.

In-tray exercise was split into 3 parts dealing with the same scenario. Mazars is planning a conference, you have to arrange various things. The first involved grouping the information you've been given and saying what action you'll take e.g. one group may be all items relating to the guest speaker and you say what action you'll take in relation to the speaker.

The second part consisted of designing the speaker schedule for the conference. Third part was arranging and costing the conference dinner. This involved doing some calculations.

Group exercise was a rather morbid one. Scenario is that 6 people are trapped in an underground cave that is flooding. They can only be rescued one at a time. Your group is the rescue committee in charge of deciding in what order they should be rescued. The only basis for your decision is the bios of the people.

RAAR

rooksx, many thanks. Does the calculation require a calculator? or is simple sort of adding numbers.

rooksx

It's simple arithmetic but you'll need a calculator. They give you one.

Thanks

n7season

I completed my tests (numerical and verbal) last night, and they emailed me immediately to say I had passed, and will shortly be contacted to arrange an interview. You still not heard anything?

ays1990

no they havent! i emailed them twice and ive heard nothing! :( duno what to do, how long does it take for them to tell me if ive passed or not!

ays1990

hey
just wondering if any one has had an assessment centre recently and could tell me what it was like?

Cheers!

n7season

So have you had your interview now? I've got mine next week.

Inceptum

Hey n7season,

I've been invited to do the online test for Mazars within the next 3 days and was hoping you could shed some light as to what the tests were like?..for example, what types of numerical questions did you receive? Inflation, currency conversion, tally tables... etc...?

Also did you complete the test or was it one of those tests you really just had to do as best as you could with the time given ?

Would like to thank you in advanced for any help you can give!

n7season

I practiced the tests on SHL: they're almost exactly the same as the ones you do with Mazars. Questions about compund interest, working out the mileage for company expenses, reading graphs. Pretty simple algebra, just that you're under big time pressure (which you should "thrive under" if you're doing audit). I only got to question 17/20 and still passed, but I'd suggest making sure each question is correct before you move on becasue they're not hard - I don't know whether they negatively mark.

Also, I received an email instantly to say I'd passed and needed to take the verbal reasoning, and after you pass that you're invited to an interview.

Good luck

Inceptum

hey n7season, i just did my numerical test for mazars and im taking a break and hopefully will do the verbal reasoning test tomorrow... i'm curious though, did you find out you had passed the numerical test immediately after you took the test , or did you only find out your results after you took both tests? cheerz

n7season

Hi Inceptum,

I was invited to the numerical online test first, with no mention of the verbal reasoning. Once I had completed the numerical test, I was immediatley emailed to say I had passed, and asked to then sit the verbal reasoning test.

My guess would be for your case is that you'll be emailed once you've done the numerical reasoning with the outcome.

hey thanks for replying!

When I did the numerical reasoning this is what they sent me:

"We are delighted to inform you that you have passed our initial screening stage. We would now like you to take an online verbal test."

but it just was a mail merge of the previous email, with the exception being that numerical reasoning was now replaced with verbal reasoning... is this the signal to me that I passed the numerical test? : /

Inceptum

Apologies for the double post,

can some one confirm to me what I should expect from the one-to-one interview stage with mazars?

Some say there is an e-tray, others dont ... :S tad confused...

n7season

My experience was about a fifty minute interview. Started with reading a newspaper-type article, and being asked to analyse the key points - summarize, who are the stakeholders, and what's your opinion.

Then there are questions on; why particular university, why course, why accountancy, why Mazars. And then competency; teamwork, acheivements, dealing with multiple deadlines, difficult module at uni.

The interview was quite relaxed, and matched up to everything I had already read from internet sources.

(No e-tray for me, that's at the assement centre)
