University of Coventry
Information
Coventry University is known as a ‘new university’ or a ‘post-1992 university’ after the Further and Higher Education Act of 1992 granted university status to polytechnic institutions throughout the UK. Originally Coventry College of Design, founded in 1843, it joined with a number of other technology colleges in the area to become Lanchester Polytechnic; the name was changed to Coventry as there was confusion with Lancaster University and Manchester Polytechnic.
Being of a design and technology background, Coventry has always displayed strengths in engineering teaching and research, and has developed the rest of its programme throughout the last 20 years. There are around 3,000 postgraduates studying at Coventry. The institution is the first in the UK to offer disaster management as a taught course.
