How did you find the recruitment process?
Really interesting and challenging, but not in the way I expected. The process is unlike any hiring process I have ever been through. Being from Canada, ‘core competency’ was off of my radar!
Why did you choose to work for KPMG Performance and Technology (P&T)?
It was the only professional services firm that I felt valued diversity. I like that they give people opportunities to work in advisory that don’t necessarily have the relevant work experience or degrees. As long as you’re capable, confident and a person that can deliver- they want you, and can teach you the rest!
What is the best thing about working for KPMG P&T?
The people, who are some of the most talented, intelligent, and highly skilled individuals I have ever met.
What qualifications are you working towards and what support are you getting?
I have completed my CIMA foundational certificate in my first six month of programme. I will likely be studying for the CIMA operational level in my second year as well. We get lots of support- from courses, days off to study, and online learning platforms. My managers have really understood the time constraints of studying, and have been conscious of my workload leading up to the exams as well.
What do you do on a day-to-day basis/ what kind of roles have you had?
I think the better question is the what kinds of roles HAVEN’T I had! My clients have been exceptionally diverse, and all prestigious. I have done everything from present to Board members to managing a workstream on project- I have been very happy the responsibility that my teams have given me.
How do you work with clients?
Every job I have been on- it’s hit the ground running, and get completely stuck in. It’s a learn-by-doing environment, but your team will be there to support you along the way.
What advice would you give someone wanting to join P&T?
DO IT! And buy a Kindle- you will likely tend to travel a fair bit.
What did you study at University? Is it a barrier if your degree isn’t accountancy related?
I have my BAH in Global Development and my MA in Labour Studies and HR. P&T valued my ‘atypical’ degrees, and saw this strength that would enable me to bring a fresh perspective to our work.
What social, society and CSR activities have you been involved with at KPMG?
I was lucky enough to win CSR’s first annual Bright Ideas competition. Myself and two other graduates developed a CSR project to be implemented locally in London and pitched to a very senior panel of KPMG partners and members of the leadership team. As we won, CSR is funding our project and assisting us in the implementation of our idea… AND we all get to travel to Africa to work with NGOs on meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals in two-week technical placements. I am going to Jinga, Uganda to work with Restless Development in September 2011.
What opportunities are available to you in the long term at KPMG?
Many. I feel that the firm will be willing to support my professional development for as long as I am willing to work hard and enjoy the challenge of being in P&T Advisory.
