Postgraduate Study at UCLan

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is recognised as a leading postgraduate institution.  Established in 1828, the University now has a growing reputation for preparing its students to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

With over 4,000 postgraduate students, and internationally renowned postgraduate teaching staff, it’s no wonder that UCLan achieved eleven four star world leading ratings, following the results of the latest government Research Assessment Exercise.

UCLan has invested over £120 million during the last five years on new buildings and facilities to support teaching, learning and leisure activities, to make it an up-to-the-minute university.

Employability and Careers Support

As a sector-leading university, UCLan will help you to make a success of your future learning, employment, self-employment or other options you choose, by providing –

  • Individually tailored careers information, advice and guidance
  • ‘learning from work’ opportunities during your course, such as work placements, internships, live projects and volunteering
  • Employability and enterprise opportunities throughout your time at UCLan to enhance your skills
  • Employer presentations and specialist seminars including ‘how to survive assessment centres’ and ‘how to get a job’ or ‘how to develop your career in the North West’
  • Help, guidance and information should you wish to start a business or become self employed
  • Employability, enterprise and careers support through online workshops, email, via face-to-face support in our 'futures' hub and through the web portal ‘my futures’.

Where are we?

UCLan is located in Preston in the North West of England, a rich and culturally diverse place to study, as well as being one of the UK’s most reasonably-priced places to live. It is a buzzing, vibrant cosmopolitan city, with a wide range of shops, restaurants and bars all within walking distance of the campus.

Good transport links mean the city is ideally placed for national and international travel:  it is three hours from London by rail, one hour from Manchester International Airport, 20 minutes from the coast and one hour from the beautiful scenery of the Lake District.

Our student support is second to none and includes a student information centre, the ‘i’, to help with areas such as careers, counselling, financial or academic advice.  You can find out more about postgraduate study at UCLan by visiting www.uclan.ac.uk/pg

If you’re thinking about research …

Think of UCLan. In the most recent RAE exercise, UCLan was assessed in 17 subject areas.  All were rated as having research of international excellence and 11 of UCLan's subject areas contain research which is world leading.  With us, it’s all about building on our existing strengths and investing in new research areas – in this way we can confirm our status as one of the country’s leading universities for practical research and teaching. To prove this we’re setting up some new research centres, all in areas where we have established ourselves as experts. We’ve also got an active body of research within different subject disciplines and welcome enquiries from students wanting to study for a research degree.

Recent research developments

We recently secured funding for 118 separate research projects from prestigious national and international sources.

These major research projects span many areas of UCLan’s specialisms, including employability, sustainability and public health within the North West, and involve working in partnership with academic institutions across the world and local business.

We believe in preparing you for work in the real world - UCLan’s links with industry include working with internationally renowned companies such as BAE Systems, who use our Applied Digital Signal and Image Processing (ADSIP) Centre for aerospace non-destructive testing.  UCLan is also involved in the important new area of Nuclear Decommissioning, in conjunction with the Westlakes Research Institute in Cumbria, and in developing sign language through our International Centre for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies (iSLanDS) in countries such as Bali, Jamaica and Uganda.
