Mountbatten Institute The New York Internship Programme
Information
The Mountbatten Institute is a not-for-profit organization that administers paid, 12-16 month programmes in New York and Bangkok for enthusiastic and skilled graduates from the UK. The mission of the Mountbatten Internship Programme is to foster international and cross cultural understanding through experiential education, practical training and residence abroad and to provide opportunities for personal growth and professional development.

Since 1984, the Mountbatten Internship Programme has provided hundreds of university graduates with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the high-powered business environment of New York City - giving them a chance to expand their horizons, perspectives, and friendships. All of our interns are recruited and interviewed by our own staff, mainly in the UK but also in Sydney, Australia and in Bangkok, Thailand.
What is the Mountbatten Internship Programme?
Twice a year, in March and September, Mountbatten interns embark on a year-long programme which involves a full-time work placement and part-time study in New York, United States. Mountbatten organizes the placement, the visas, accommodation, arrival and orientation for all interns while a dedicated team of professionals work from our Manhattan office to offer advice and support throughout the year. An extraordinarily well-structured programme, the Mountbatten experience is unique and rewarding on many levels.
The Internship
At the heart of the programme is the work placement. We invite young professionals to take advantage of this unique opportunity to gain one year’s paid work experience in New York City. Mountbatten interns are placed with one of our many premier Sponsor Companies ranging from multinational giants (Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan Chase, Citi, American Express, Royal Bank of Scotland) through to non-profit/ non-commercial entities (British American Business Inc., Big Apple Circus, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation) right down to small companies including sole proprietorships.
The 100+ Sponsor Companies we work with are selected due to the diversity of their operations and their commitment to intercultural exchange and experiential education. The large majority of our roles are within large financial services firms although we do provide a small number of placements in events management, law, marketing, recruitment and government. Current roles include Junior Business Analyst, Conference Coordinator, Marketing Assistant, Paralegal, Administrative Assistant, Assistant Project Managers, HR Intern and many more.
All of the positions are office based, administrative in nature (we don’t offer creative roles) and are designed to encourage the development of soft skills in a challenging, business environment.
Education
Mountbatten's unique integrative learning curriculum combines the year's full time work experience with one of our sponsor companies in New York with participation in an academic programme. Interns are required to study for a postgraduate qualification throughout the year during evening and weekend sessions.
A key objective of the newly launched academic programmes developed by the Mountbatten Institute, in partnership with Saint Mary’s University College, is to enable interns to develop skills in analysis, problem solving and decision-making through a cross-cultural Business Studies curriculum.
Interns must opt to study towards one of two academic options:
- The Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice
- The MBA in International Business Practice

The Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice
The Mountbatten Institute/St Mary's University College Postgraduate Certificate in International Business Practice is unique in that it allows interns to integrate their studies with the practical experience of their employment. Interns will have ample opportunity during your internship year in New York to research their company, or industry in light of the business and management approaches which they will be learning. The skills and knowledge acquired during the year of work and study abroad will give interns the opportunity to test theories and analyse ideas in an international context. The curriculum will cover the basic areas of international business and management in the challenging academic and business environment of New York City.
The MBA in International Business Practice
Candidates interested in pursuing a more intensive academic timetable are invited to consider our MBA option. Like the PGC, the MBA in International Business Practice is approved and validated by St. Mary’s University College, London and has been designed to link workplace practice with business theory for interns who wish to experience a new dimension of postgraduate study and career enhancement. Candidates will begin their degree while undertaking their internship year in New York and will complete their studies in Bangkok with an intensive 3 months of full time study.
This degree is designed for the aspiring manager of international business concerns and for those who are interested in seeing beyond their present career choices, or current workplace, and exploring the international dimensions of business practice.
