JP Morgan Finance Assessment Day

Hi everyone. I am wondering if anyone can share some tips about the assessment day in JPM, particularly for Finance graduates? I am going to have one in December, and trying to prepare as much as I can now..

I was told by HR that there will be a presentation and a group exercise, and further interviews. So these are my questions:
- What will happen in the group exercise? how many candidates for a group to discuss? Is the topic we are required to discuss also the topic for our presentation later on?
- Is the presentation 1-to-1 with an interviewer? how long will it be? were you asked any further questions? any tricky ones?
- what kind of questions were asked in the interview 2nd round? are they competencies based, or more related to Accounting & finance? any brain teaser kind of questions?

Many thanks !!

Abercrombie

i have one also. has anyone done it?

Did you guys get a date for the assessment centre for Finance.

I was told it will be in January but no actual date. And also that all positions will start in September 2009.

Is this the same information everyone is given ?

SethMonster

anyone ?

I got an email today from JP Morgan for a first round interview for the Finance 09 scheme, it mentions in the email that there will be 2 30 mins interviews back to back with managers and alumni, can someone tell me what sort of questions would be asked and how to answer thm. Also it mentions that there might be a numerical test, is it going to be a similar one to the online SHL one.

Replies will be appreciated, Thanks, Hasham

Hey ck, I wonder why they are still assessing, if the places are full??/ I would really be disappointed if they are not recruiting!! So how was your first interview? did you have the numerical test as well??

Thanks,

happy123

Does anyone have the assessment centre on the 20th??

blessedme

Hey, happy123,

I think we r on the same boat. I have one AC with JP for the finance graduate programme on the 20th Feb, so i guess i will see u on this Fri. How is ur preparation going on. To be honest with u, i just started TODAY............ my god...............

happy123

hey blessedme,

good to hear there is someone else.... i've started preparation today as well and im not sure what to prepare for to be honest.... apart from the usual company knowledge!!!! do you have anymore info on the group excersise??

CK

hey happy.

I had an email saying i was very good and i had passed the interview.

So i was through to the next round!

But then got ermail saying... all grad 09 places are ful wait for emai in jan and then feb.
got email in jan for waiting in feb.. havent got email for feb, they said early feb!

SO i will be disappointed if there is not good outcome after all this!

ck

blessedme

Well, I have no idea abt the group exercise at all. At the moment, all i can do is to prepare the competency based interview. Cos we cant really prepare the group excerise, case study or presentation.

Good luck to both of us!

Abercrombie

ok i did the finance at JPM before Christmas. i will give as much detail as i can and wont offer more because i am about to bath!

1) you get there early(i did) and then they made you do some logic test where you use pieces of information to try and work out things like time differences you need to see when they can host meeting but have to do it in a way so that everyone can take part because of the time difference of different countries, you also have a scenario where you have to work out patterns etc etc. cant really practice although one guy had done it before at RBS for finance,

then you have the presentation. basically you are given a pack of information which contains information about a merger between two banks. you need to decide what kind of things are important and you need to highlight anything that will come out as a problem. the main thing was that they would be using two different accounting systems. basically draw a few graphs, talk the talk etc.

then you are then told to present it to a real employee who will probably work in the division. and he will as a few questions. a tip is to bring in real life examples and i spoke about employee morale and compared it to barcap and lehman merger (clash of culture)

then after then you get a team exercise based on the presentation. you just did. you have to talk about a system to adopt. basically you should know what to do in these exercises by now. my feed back was that i didn't contribute enough. i was more managing the discussion and debate. people will come in with a game plan. you should too..

after than it was two interview. bog standard, things i remember was what makes a good leader, teamwork etc.

then thats all. please no PMs i wont say more than i have done which is pretty detailed. and i feel that i wrote so much because i had a lot of help from some people i really appreciate. so i am giving back. one thing is that when people don't get offers they usually dont bother writing back. they see no point. and no i didn't get any offers this year, had my last AC last week. but i am hoping that this helps someone and that you too wil share your experience so someone can benefit. :)x

happy123

hey Abercrombie!1

waw Thanks!! that was more than usefull, I appreciate your help!! I hope you'll get another opportunity to shine : ) as you seem you did well in the AC.

Good luck blessedme!

Thanks again!

blessedme

Abercrombie,

Thanks for ur post, really good!

happy123

Goo luck CK I hope you will get some good news in the near future!!

CK

oh thats some gd news at least!!!

what role did u apply for? mine was for technology?

thetheyesthe

minty

Any idea how many ppl are they looking to take for Finance September Intake? Anyone got an Offer Yet from the 20th Feb A.C?

I dont even know if its worth preparing for the A.C, may be they are done hiring!

Gud Luck Everyone!

blessedme

I got rejected last week!

minty

Blessedme: I am so sorry to hear that, did u get any feedback?..How did u find the A.C? was it hard?..Dont feel bad its not you its the RECESSION!

blessedme

Hi Minty,

Thanks for ur message. I am alright, cos I have accepted an offer from another firm before I attended the AC at JP Morgan.

The feedback I got was that my performance in the logical test was below their min requirement. In addition, for the self-awarness interview, I only gave one weakness of mine, which was not enough according to thier criteria. They said I did quite well in the case study, presentation, group discussion and career motivation interview.

On the assessment day, there were 6 candidates in total. (including me). I remembered that one guy said there were only 10 places left for the Sep intake. So if that was the case, you shouldnt really worry too much.

Good luck with ur AC.

minty

Thats gud that have another offer:-) awesum!

Just wanted to know about the Logical Test- I thought the A.C consisted of Case Study, Presentation, Group Excercise and 2 interviews..Please could you tell me if there is any thing like the logical test..was it similar to the SHL online ones or was it related to the case? Thank you so much !!!

blessedme

The logical test is completely different from the SHL test. Actually, the test itself was not that hard. The main reason why I failed was that I was stuck in one question, and spent too much time trying to figure it out, which left me with only 10 mins to finish the rest of the questions.

Basically, you are given 5 groups of cards to answer 5 questions in 35 mins. Each group is composed of 20 cards, what u have to do is to try to infer the answers from the given cards. Hope this helps.

thetheyesthe

Who told you there were 10 places. I heard their finance division is very small. They had over a 1000 apps and onlky offer 5-8 places.

So I think evryone done well to get this far.

minty

No, actually this year they have separated the Finance Division from the OFBM division so they need more people. If they took like 5 ppl from the last A.C so there are 5 positions left or may be less :-(

minty

Hey Blessedme and thetheyesthe please could you guys post some of the the interview questions u guys were asked apart from the usual why JP, Why Finance?

Commercial Awareness Qs? or some weird competency ones?

Thank youu SO much

I wish u Guys best of Luck in your job search!!!

Hi Minty,

Dont worry at all cos there are no competency questions and commercial awarness questions at all. You only need to prepare for career motivation questions like why jp, why finance, what finance analysts do on a regular basis and what are the impacts of current financial crisis on finance division. I only got asked the above questions. So you will be fine so long as you prepare these questions.

Good luck!

Hi minty,
The case study is not computer based. Neither is the logical test. They are all paper based. Just to let you know that the recruitment process for risk management is different from that of Finance and OFBM.
