Hey everyone

I couldn't find an updated thread with anyone who has entered the HSBC Executive Management Programme 2013,

I've done the online tests and am now scheduled for a telephone interview. Does anyone have any advice as to what questions I should expect? this programme sounds absolutely amazing and I want to ensure I am fully prepared!

Thanks :)

Hey RachelB

I have also been invited to a telephone interview, with the option of a few dates that I need to select from. From what I have come to known, HSBC does a competency based interview, focussing on the core customer services, Meeting targets/deadlines, Risk management, Decision Making and Team working. Try the following links: http://www.wikijob.co.uk/wiki/telephone-interview

Hope it helps.

Keep me posted! Cheers

RachelB

Thanks Zak, lets hope we both get through!!

Guys, if you can share questions that they asked during the phone interview, I believe everybody would appreciate it.

So sorry to hear that Tommy, did you hear back from them yet? Maybe you didn't do as bad as you think?

What kind of questions did they ask if they weren't competency ones? Would really really appreciate your help

Thanks, Rach

tommy1990

they give you the feedback at the end of the phone call and let you know if you have progressed or not (I didnt).

I apologise that the last message probably wasnt that helpful. all I would say is structure your answers around the STARS technique:

http://www.prospects.ac.uk/interview_tips_interview_questions.htm

and they seemed in many cases to want personal examples rather than examples based around your job roles / experience ect.

this is based on the feedback they gave me!

I dont really want to go into specific questions as they may ask different ones. from my experience it is better to be prepared to think on your feet than to prepare specific examples.

hope this helps

BigManJuam

Please go into specifics, I'd rather have a general idea of the kind of questions they ask than have no idea whatsoever. If you could post any questions you can remember it would help a lot, the more the better!

It was based around there values,

-Dependable and do the right thing -Open to different ideas and cultures -Connected to customers, communities, regulators and each other

The questions were similar to other competency-based interviews such as where you've gone out your way to help someone, learnt something new out of your interest and shown integrity when working as a team. It was fairly short and lasted about 20-25 minutes with them telling you at the end whether you are successful or not.

Good Luck!

pendresc

cheers for the advice dan

appreciate it.

good luck with your assessment day!

pendresc

passed the telephone interview and just received an email to book assessment day which is 2nd Feb in Birmingham.

good luck all

MissM.

Hello everyone!

It seems like most of you have had their interviews and you, pendresc are already done with the AC too!

I have my telephone interview scheduled for 9th February and wanted to ask for advice. From what I've read on the internet, it is only competency based, right? Were there any unexpected questions or particularly difficult ones? I assume standard competencies they are after would be: leadership, teamwork plus few others they have on their website. If anyone remembers specific questions, it would be great if you could mention them!

I really want this job so want to make sure I prepare as best as possible!

Thanks a lot guys!

Magda

pendresc

Hello.

I had the AC the other day, was a good experience. Involved role play, group exercise and interview, pretty standard questions but all stuff changes each assessment day. Telephone interview questions were same as what Dan said:

-Dependable and do the right thing -Open to different ideas and cultures -Connected to customers, communities, regulators and each other

Had an offer for the scheme Friday which is good news

Good luck

MissM.

Hi Pendresc!

Great, well done! Congratulations :)

Can we count on more details re: tasks? I guess it would help everyone. Thanks!

I have my telephone interview tomorrow so let's hope I get to the next stage!!!

Best wishes

RachelB

Well done Pendresc! I unfortunately was not so lucky and didn't make it through, no one in my group did. As I've been through the whole process though if anyone wants any advice then send me a private message :)

pendresc

Thanks, but bad luck Rachel.

There is a competency interview, an exercise which you are given details of before you have to do it.

And also a group task where you present your findings. The group task involved reading loads of information and deciding how to improve a virtual branch in a virtual country

I too got an offer about a month ago. Still waiting for them to send me the official letter and contract to sign it.

@pendresc have you heard from them at all regarding your contract? Also, what is your starting date? Mine is around March 2013, so still trying to figure out what to do from graduation till then!

pendresc

I haven't heard from them yet, well done on the offer.

I emailed them the other day and they said they are finalising the dates and locations, but again it is around march 2013.

I graduated last july so i have been applying for jobs and having interviews up til now.

Was hoping to go travelling around march until start date of september (when most grad schemes start) but don't know what to do now, as I haven't got the money to go until next March?

rifeca88

I know, it's a bit of a hassle...one year till we start working! I guess most people would see this as a blessing in disguise but I really just want to start earning money!

Anyways, it seems like we're gonna be work buddies so feel free to add me on facebook to stay in touch and all that. (you can find me if you type 'rfelix88')

pendresc

Cool, I will do, names Scott by the way.

Ye a few of my mates think its good, but I am in the same position. I just wanna start earning. Any ideas on what your gonna do til then.

Gonna try and travel as much as I can but I'm going to have to get some part time work or something.

djs001

i too have had an offer but am still waiting for my formal contract like yourselves. They did say that there would be intakes in March, July and September of 2013 in an email i received but that's all i know so far.

rifeca88

congratulations djs001, join us on fb too!

pendresc

well done djs. A long time away. Would have thought the scheme would be starting september this year

djs001

Thanks and congratulations to yourselves as well, I have added you on fb rifeca88. It is a bit annoying not starting till next year but as i'm in my final year of study, it will give me a bit of time to go travelling before having to worry about holding down a serious job!

Girl12345

Hello. Is anyone starting in jan of 2013? X

pendresc

I haven't been told yet, just know that it should be 2013.

Is that when you are starting?

Well done if you have got an offer

rifeca88

I wasnt aware there was a January start, that would actually be ideal for me! Where and when did you hear this, Amy?

Girl12345

I had my assessment centre 3 months ago now. I applied for corporate and commercial management but got offered executive management. I assume jan will be filled up now with people from earlier assesment centres to be honest. Is everyone excited? I can't wait.

pendresc

well done on the offer. I am looking forward to it, just a long time to wait. I thought that there was only twice a year that they started the scheme (in March and September), but still waiting for a confirmation date.

Girl12345

Thanks you too! Theres an intake in july as well. I don't think confirmation dates are till much nearer the time so you may be waiting a while. Where are you hoping to be placed?

pendresc

Cool. So are you definitely starting in January?

I would like to be in London or Midlands (where Im from) to begin with but I know they do require you to be geographically mobile. But I would like to go abroad as well so would be up for any placements in another country. What about you. Do you know where you are located yet?

Girl12345

Yeah definitely in January but was told exact start dates and locations are sorted out much nearer the time and thats when contracts are signed as well. Yes i agree with locations as i am a northener so would like the chance to experience the south. So you have already graduated, me too, are you working at the minute?

pendresc

Cool, thought we would all start at the same time in 2013 as was wondering when we do the 4 week residential group graduate programme?

Ye I graduated July last year and am working part time for my dad at the minute. Thought I would be starting september so I was hoping to go travelling from april until then but if it isn't until march I think ill need to get an internship or some other work experience. What are your plans up until January?

Girl12345

I assume they just do the introductory thing at each intake. I work for Barclays at the minute started full time just before graduation, get some experience under my belt. What did you study?

rifeca88

I just finding it annoying that they don't reply to my emails regarding all this uncertainty about starting dates....I suppose they might be very busy. I will graduate in August, and just like pendresc don't quite know what to do from then till March! Also, I say we should create a fb group or something to stay in touch about developments and all since there's already a small bunch of us?

Girl12345

Yeah sounds good to me. Who have you been emailing? Honestly enjoy your break I went straight into full time work from uni its quite a lifestyle change. Saying that i cant wait to start at hsbc.

pendresc

Ye Facebook group sounds good. Ye a break is good but I graduated last July so am looking to fill it with an internship/travelling depending on money. At least we all know we have a job secured which is pretty good for new graduates in this climate!

sjw112

Hi, Pendresc! I have an assessment day next week and it's been really helpful reading about your experiences. i'm wondering if you could tell me a little more about the exercise you mentioned about please, which i guess is the role-play? what is it about and what it involves? And was there only one face-to-face interview which is competency/value-based?

Thank you in advance!

pendresc

Ye there was only one face to face interview which was competency based. The role play will probably change on each A/C but i just had to analyse info and come to a conclusion whether someone should receive a loan/investment. Don't think there is a right/wrong answer, they just look at how you came up with your answer and reasoning.

good luck

ghw

Did anyone else also receive their contract etc today?

Girl12345

Did you recieve yours? Do you start in september?

rifeca88

Yeah, I got my contract and letter and everything today as well. Loads of things to read and fill in, and even more questions....whose supposed to be my Line Manager to send the Medical Questionnaire to?? argh...well, at least we've got our contracts!

ghw

Yeah I got mine today, but I'm starting in March 2013. If you're waiting for yours then it might be worth checking your spam folder, because one of the emails they sent me went to my spam folder.

Girl12345

I start in september this year so did you just get it through email or in the post? I cant wait to get mine. Any surprises?

rifeca88

I am also starting in March. @GHW, you're welcome to add me on facebook to join me and other fellow ETs who are set to start next year. FB = rfelix88

Girl12345

Was your contract through email or post?
