Hey guys,

just received an email saying:

"Dear -------
Thank you for completing our online numerical reasoning aptitude test. We are delighted to confirm that you have successfully passed the minimum benchmark we look for.
Your application will now be reviewed in more detail and we will advise you as soon as possible should we wish to invite you to the next stage of the application process, which is the competency-based telephone interview."

This sounds very diplomatic to me. Has anyone received the same and would like to help me translate the above?

thanks a lot

cheers

avam

it just means that they haven't spent enough time having a look at your application, so they're not sure if they 'liked' it ;)

IBD_Haunter

got the same email today. it means, they are now gonna do the screening!

hazelground

@avam

that's an inspired good shot for a nice saturday evening :))
I'm delighted :)

@IBD_Haunter

the way I understood is that they already did some initial screening before sending out the tests.
obviously there is more to it than meets the eye ...

job1v07

What role is this for? I am still waiting for a numerical test for Client management grad scheme.

hazelground

hi

i applied for global markets origination..

Vistasp

just finished the shl numerical test for hsbc global infra-finance. if u fail, does it automatically tell you ur not through to the next round? my status simply says you have completed the test.

banking_123

hey, just wanted to ask, so did you need to do a verbal reasoning test? or is it just purely the numerical reasoning test? thanks!

hazelground

see my answer to your initial post :)

fe10jy

yeah you're right hazelground...

i live with 2 other economists; we all applied roughly the same time... but one go a rejection before numerical and me and the other were screened and proceeded to numerical.

funny though, the one who got rejected is the strongest academically, getting the 4th highest in the department last year in second year.

Vistasp

@banking_123 : There's no verbal reasoning test, atleast not for the division I applied to.

@jy1w07: I was pretty sure it was an auto-invite to the test..surprising your friend got rejected before numerical.

Now my application status has changed to :

"Dear Vistasp, Thank you for completing our online numerical reasoning aptitude test. We are delighted to confirm that you have successfully passed the minimum benchmark we look for. Your application will now be reviewed in more detail and we will advise you as soon as possible should we wish to invite you to the next stage of the application process, which is the competency-based telephone interview." (Same as hazelground's message)

They obviously haven't actually seen the application..

HSBC has started interviews - I know someone who has been invited for First Round telephone interview for Trading - London.

hazelground

IBD_Haunter

yes, but they may have different schedule for different business areas...so, we'll just need to wait and see :)

IBD_Haunter

yeah agree hazelground. worried about BofA though. they started for IBD already!

hazelground

Ohhhh....then i am worried too!

Let's hope for the best!

banking_123

how well did you guys get for your SHL practice tests in order to pass the real test. Thanks!

IBD_Haunter

well, i anwered all the questions with 6mins to spare!

Yackle

By the way, for those who will take the test not in English but in their mother tongue,

"THINK AGAIN!"

I had chosen Korean for taking the reasoning + numerical test, and while taking the test, I quite suffered from the lousy translation. It was a crude word for word translation rather than a neat and complete translation.

So, for those of you who want to take the test in their mother tongue, please take the SHL practice test in your language first, and see how it is translated.

If it's OK. go forward. But If it's not, you'd better take the test in English.

Hi
I dont understand what your question means, but you should aim to answer at least 17-18 questions correctly...

Aj

Just booked a telephone interview on 4th November (am) for Graduate Global Banking Strategic Transactions Group. Anyone else booked an appointment? Do you know what kind of questions to expect? Any guidance will be hugely beneficial. Thank you.

Also does anyone know the starting salary for HSBC IBD? I have received an offer from RBS; so not sure whether I should go and waste my time at HSBC...... Thank you once again.

Aj

banking_123

hi hazelground,

What i meant was, on the practice test on SHL, out of 39,how many questions should I have that's correct!

Thanks again Hazelground! :)

job1v07

ahh still waiting for global banking - Client management. Aj was yours for Associate position or analyst? My friend got an analyst offer this summer, can't remember the exact but something like 35k + 10k signing bonus + bonus.

JGwl

Has anyone applied to the asset management division and heard anything after the generic telephone interview msg?

thanks

Aj

Hi Job1v07,

Thank you very much for the info. It means I will be going for the interview lol. I have applied for the graduate analyst role in London. Best of luck with your application.

Aj

hazelground

hahahaha.....

banking_123

tough to say because some of the SHL practice questions can be more elaborate and require elaborate answers whilst the ones you'll get from banks, they tend to be more straightforward, I assume, due to time constraints..

Let's say that if you find the 39 Qs doable and you can solve them at a good speed with an accuracy degree of 65-75%,
I dont see any problems for you in topping the numerical test :)

however, as i said, it is tough to compare, i feel the SHL practice test should serve more like an orientation for you and not a prelude
to the real test...hope this helps. good luck, let us know how it goes :)

job1v07

Called them today, said my CV hasn't scored enough points, but still in process of review. 3 weeks after submission. So I guess there is some level of review before you get invitation to online tests.

IBD_Haunter

@job1v07 - can you PM me the HSBC recruitment phone number, if might as well give them a call. havent heard from them since the test.

Aj

Hi; I had my telephone interview this morning 1030-1105; I was told that I would be notified of the outcome in two days. The lady on the phone said one of the ACs will be in two weeks for Global Banking Advisory. She also mentioned if I did well enough in this round; my application will be forwarded to a panel!!! Then these panel will decide whether I will be invited to the AC. Anyhow; I received an email 20 minutes later stating: I was successful and they are reviewing my application (once again; this will be the third screening).
I was asked: - Why HSBC? Why IBD? Give examples of communication, teamworking, persuasion, working under pressure etc. She also asked some follow on questions from my answers! My advice would be just speak clearly and at the beginning state: 'if I am talking to fast; please ask me to slow down. Also if I'm moving off the topic; do stop me'. I also made some light hearted comments regarding how fast she has to type; once you build a natural conversation and rapport; it works really well.
Hopefully I will be invited to the AC and they will notify me very soon; I think their pace is pretty decent compared to all the bulge bracket IBs. Anyone else on the same boat as me? It would be nice to meet some wiki-buddies at the AC (if I am invited) lol.

Hi, Aj

I am having mine pretty soon for the same position as well.
Do you think I need to prepare 2 examples for each competency?

I am really nervous because I do not have much time to prepare for it as I am on a full-time job at the moment.

I will keep my fingers crossed and hope I can make it to the AC and meet you there!

Aj

Hi matey,

don't worry too much. You can have two examples of each competency but I do not think they will ask you two for two examles each (its a good contingency plan though). Just know about the role; know about HSBC; know about your strengths and wekanesses; check the competencies which HSBC asks for and prepare your answers in line with them. You will be fine. Let me know if you get through to the AC and I will the same. may see you there.

Thank you IBD. Give me a call sometime.

Hi All,

I was wondering whether you are all applying for full time? Anyone also applied for summer?

hazelground

|Hey guys.

I also received an email from hsbc inviting me to the next stage - phone interview. they ask me to log onto my account and book a slot.
but when i logged in, there was a message like this:
"Interview Booking
There are no open interview slots at the moment. Please try again later or contact hsbc@graduatequeries.co.uk for further assistance."

Anyone familiar with this? Am I doing something wrong?

many thanks, guys!

@Aj.....seems like you've done a great job! Let us know how it goes further :))

drakaliev

Hey there,

I've just been booked for an interview for 9 Nov. Applying for Global Markets - Structuring. Thank Aj for the info and the questions being asked. I'll give you more details on mine interview later. Fingers-crossed.

Cheers,
Tsvetan

Aj

Best of luck Tsvetan.

Thank you Hazelground. Hope you have managed to find an interview slot; if not give them a call/email immediately. Let us know know how it goes. Best of luck to you too.

Aj

cyrion

Hello ,

I ve applied for the global market graduate program at hsbc and I did the telephone interview today. The questions were the same than AJ. I believe I did ok but it's hard to say because the interview was very formal. As for AJ, she mentioned that I would be notified of the outcome in 2 days, however I did not receive an email.

Good luck to all of you

Cyrion

IBD_Haunter

i havent recieved any tele-interview invite yet! called them up yesterday. they said that they are still going thru the applications and the telephone interviews will be taking be taking place over the next two weeks or so......

so far, it doesnt look too good for me!

zachtan2003

I had my interview this afternoon for Strategic Transaction Group position.

I was asked like 10+ questions and did badly.... t only 2 of them were similar to Aj's ....... How bad luck...

I can't remember all the questions but some of them were like

  • What significant skills you have learnt from your experience or studies and you have put them into practice...
  • Why Bank?
  • persuasion
  • work with people from different background
  • tasks that took you out of your comfort zone
  • presentation skills
  • how to handle argument

and a hell lot more which i can't remember

and i was rejected within 2 hours after the telephone interview...

Aj

Hey IBD, don't worry bruv; you will get an email soon (fingers crossed). What did you apply for? I guess at present they are getting back to IBD and S&T applications.
Zachtan2003; I am very sorry to hear about your misfortune. I am sure the telephone interviews do not last for more than 40 minutes. In that case; if you answered 10 questions; they gave you only 4 minutes or less per question. Thats harsh. I was asked no more than five/six questions; and as I follow the STAR (Situation > Task > Action > Result) method and speak very slowly; 35 minutes went really fast. Were you called from a number that starts with 01628? Hopefully; you have other applications and ACs to look forward to. Don't be too disheartened, keep trying and I am sure you will attain something very soon.

job1v07

Ahh I live in the area code 01628... don't think I will be receiving a call!

banking_123

Hi All, I was wondering are you all applying to the UK? Anyone applying to Asia?

F.

Hi,

Just received this e-mail:

"Thank you for participating in the recent first-stage interview with us. We are delighted to confirm that you have been successful in meeting the minimum criteria we look for.

Due to the high volume of quality applications, we will be conducting a final review of all successful candidates prior to the next stage of the selection process, the final-stage business assessment centre. We will advise you as soon as possible with further details.

We thank you in advance for your patience and your continued interest in HSBC."

An other review????!!!!! Quite strange, isn't it?

Smbd had the same e-mail?

fe10jy

Ah right, I see, thanks Josh ;)

Aj

Received an email on Sunday night at 11.44 inviting me to the AC for Global Banking Advisory! The AC is on 12th starting at 7.15am. Anyone else got the invite for advisory?

digitald

Congrats Aj! That will be an early morning for you

Aj

Cheers digi-d; it certainly will be.

As far as negative motivation goes; this AC may end up being the worst one. There are tons of articles on bad pay and bonuses; and how weak the HSBC advisory arm is!!! I couldn't find any information on recent M&A transactions (apart from BAA and a bucket load of articles on DCM).

Could anyone please help me with providing direction towards finding about some recent transactions? (M&A/corporate restructuring preferably).

Thanks in advance.

Aj

sent some info mate. If you need anymore help, give me a buzz!!

I would say, that you should focus on your corp. finance knowledge. DCF, Comps, Precedence - specially and why one is better/worse than the other. when to use which one...etc... a couple of deals will come in handy. but if they decide to quizz you regarding the deals if will come down to the valuations. Also try learning some standard models like the LBO model. that always comes handy.

Goodluck mate.

(like i said, if you need to discuss something, give me a buzz)
