Has anyone recently had a first interview for Deutsche Bank?

I have my first interview coming up next week for the analyst position in Group Technology and Operations sector and am just wondering what the interview questions are like? ive read the Wikijob examples and prepared for them, but if anyone has some more first hand knowledge it would be great, thanks

noob

i've had my interview - it was all competencies, although other people had other experiences. not sure if you know of this site, may be useful: http://nicube.com/ has a good forum.

Redsuperted

Was that first round noob? Have you had an assessment centre too?

noob

it was the first round, haven't heard anything back yet, so i'm guessing its a no :(

grelanturn

I applied to DB about 10 days ago, how long did the initial screening take? Mine appears to be on the 'Application Submitted' stage for an eternity???

noob

took a while. i still havent had any feedback from the interview and its been 3 working days TUT TUT for them. apparently, they're holding AC, so it depends on how many they're taking each time for each division. once they know there are still places available, they'll contact you. altho, i do have to stress the word *APPARENTLY*.

the09

I submitted my application for private wealth management at the end of September and I still haven't heard anything back. Is this normal?!

eyt

Hey, I had a first round interview with them for GTO as well a few weeks back.

The interview was with 2 people within the division, they'd both worked for around 10 years each, maybe less, but not sure exactly how senior they were. Both were quite nice. I don't think they have set questions to ask you, it felt more like a chat, and around half of the questions were competency - I got quite a lot asked about leadership. They probed this area a fair amount so asked further questions depending on my answers. Just prepare well for the competencies and you should be fine. The other half of the questions were based around commercial awareness, they asked me to describe the trade lifecycle, which part of Operations I saw myself fit in, and also what I thought about the credit crisis etc etc. Other than that they will ask compentency based questions around your CV and application form, so its important that you know and can talk in detail about anything you wrote in these.

I got an email the day after inviting me to the final round interviews. I think DB are pretty fast in telling you whether you got through or not. Hope this helps! and good luck!

noob

they're not always fast!!! i had my interview last tuesday, told me today i got through to the final stage!

when is/was your final round?

eyt

Yep I had my final round last fri, got a phone call today offering me the job!

grelanturn

hey eyt, well done, congratulations, is that for Group Technology and Operations? How long ago did you apply to DB?

eyt

Yeh, I applied for Operations which is part of GTO, more specifically TMG (Transaction Management Group). I applied early september, had first round interview end of sep, then final round last fri. The HR people mentioned that they are running final rounds every friday from now on, and last fri (17th) was the first.

noob

congratulations!!!!

didyou have to do a case study? and also for the numerical test, they mention to bring a calculator, but i remember not being able to use one?!?!?

kingfisher1980

Hey eyt,

Congrats on the job offer. Well done!!!

Can you kindly elaborate a little on your final round experience. How was the test? was it similar to the online test that DB set.

Also how was the second round of interviews different from the first round? Were there any technical questions?

I will really appreciate if you can provide your insights. thanks

grelanturn

arggh!! Still waiting for my DB application to be processed!! what was the test like? Was it SHL?

eyt

There was no case study, just a numerical test in the morning followed by 3 interviews. You do get to use the calculator that you bring, but they don't provide any so make sure you bring one!

The actual test is psl also. To be honest I can't really remember what the online test was like.. For the test on the day, there are I think 40 questions and you get 45 minutes (I'm not eactly sure though). The quesitons are split into groups of about 4 or 5 on a double page spread where on one side there are 2 or 3 graphs/tables etc and the other side is questions. The questions are very easy at the beginning and get progressively harder/take longer to work out. I remember having to spend a few minutes for each question towards the end, and I missed out the last 5 or 10 questions or so because I ran out of time. Just make sure you work through as quickly as possible but make sure your answers are correct and also if there are any questions you aren't too sure about then just skip/guess and come back if you have time.

The actual interviews I got were all purely competency, so almost no technical/commercial awareness questions were asked. Each interviewer will ask around a different set of competencies, but I still managed to use similar experiences/examples in each interview. But just make sure you have all your competencies covered. The first interview was more like a chat than the others - the interviewer did a short intro and then asked questions like.. tell me about yourself in 2 min, why operations, did you consider other banks, if so why deutsche, followed by competency. The second and third interviews were much less like a chat. I basically went in shook hands and then they almost immediately started asking questions which were quite specific. I would say they were similar to those types of questions that the big 4 will ask you e.g. when have you adapted your communication style etc. The only technical like question I was asked was to give some advice on how deutsche could improve or continue to be successful in the current economic climate. Although I did get quite a lot of commercial awareness questions in my first interview so this is probably why they decided to focus mroe on competencies. Either way I think it will really help to know whats going on and have a really sound knowledge of the markets and how they work in case you get asked.

Contrary to what I thought throughout the whole interview process I didn't get asked any questions like how many countries do we operate in? can you name anyone on our executive board? or how is our bank structured? although I did prepare for all these. Obviously its good to know just in case they ask.

Hope this helps.

kingfisher1980

Hey eyt,

Thanks heaps for your comments. I am due for an assessment centre with DB on 31st. Your comments will definitely help me prepare.

By the way how many others were there at your AC? Also what do you say when they ask about tell me about yourself in 2 minutes - should I talk about my education and any work experience or it is more of a question about my personality.

Were your interviewers from the business unit or they were HR people?

Thanks again for your assistance.

noob

i'm getting all sorts of mixed comments about the deutsche bank 2nd round.

think eyt said they had their first one last friday and will continue to hold one every friday i was previously invited to the one this friday (24th oct) but have been told all acs have been put on hold till 14th november kingfisher says he/she got one on the 31st :S

CONFUSED.COM IS ME

ENSS

When did they invite you to the AC?

When did they tell u your AC has been put on hold?

noob

well on monday i got an invite for the one tomorrow (24th oct), then got an email an hour or so later saying that they had been postponed to the 14th nov. on another forum, someone else had the same experience, and they called up hr who said that it was the case for everyone!!!!!

CONFUSED.COM IS STILL ME!

ENSS

When they emailed telling you that you made it, did you reply to that email confirming your attendance and availability? And then they replied to this email you then sent, explaining that your AC had been moved.

Or did you recieve an auto email saying you made it, then an auto mail saying postponed?

And who is your HR rep? The person who is emailing you?

please provide more information so i can provide my insight.

noob

i checked them after both were sent, so i couldn't confirm attendence for the first one. have you got an AC soon or something?

tbh i'm a little intimidated with all your questions lol.

kingfisher1980

hey guys,

i just found out that AC has been delayed till later...i am in the same boat as all of you....but it will still be nice to get eyt's opinion to my questions above

the09

Is anyone applying for private wealth management here?

eyt

I definitely remember the graduate recruitment rep saying they were holding final rounds every friday, but obviously they've probably postponed for some reason. I think its probably best if you call them up and ask them just to clarify, but from what people have said here seems like its the same case for everyone.

There were around 10-15 people at my final round. About half were technology and half were ops, so all were GTO. The interviewers were all quite senior people, I got interviwed by the European head of IB Ops, some sort of head for TMG and the other I can't remember. They were all women, and all were pretty nice and friendly. Actually they didn't tell me how high up they were at the beginnning of the interviews so for the first interview I went in not really knowing until I asked towards the end and she told me, which kinda surprised me how senior she actually was! So really don't be put off by how senior they are!

In terms of the questions asking you to describe yourself, 2 minutes really isn't very long. I think they are just looking for a short intro to you, just take it as a question like.. tell me a bit about yourself. I basically talked a bit about my background, where I'm from etc, what I'm studying at uni, and then how I became interested in banking, spoke to ppl in industry and followed news and markets etc.

zhangji

Hi eyt: You are right, the inverview is indeed every friday, cos I will attend mine next friday in GTO as well. But I still need your help. Can you tell me during the interviews, should I expect some situational questions and brain storming questions? or all of them are purely competency based questions? Can you give me more detail what questions will be asked in the interview? and what else I should prepare? Thank you so much for your kind help.

ENSS

Who has a final round interview confirmed by personal HR email for Friday 31st October? Or 7th November

eyt

zhangji: there were no situational or brain storming questions at all, as I said before almost all the questions I got were competency based. They will be the typical competency questions you will expect at most interviews. The most important preparation you can do is to prepare answers and make sure you've got each competency covered (I made sure to have 2 examples for each one). Also do some research into Deutsche - why you want to work there rather than other banks (I got asked if I applied elsewhere), and also generally how they are doing, which business areas are performing well and possibly think of ways in which they can improve. Good luck.

zhangji

Hi eyt: It is so appreciated for your kind help. Hopefully we can become colleagues. Thank you so much.

zhangji

Hi eyt: I am so sorry, I got another question. For the commericial awareness, do I need to know very much information about what happened in the current market? and tell them many news and stories about different companies? DO I need to read FT everyday or not? How much do they expect me to know in the financial area? How should I prepare this ? Thank you so much for your help!

ibankee_com

Yes, you need to read FT and to be aware of the main stories of the week/month. You also need to have a rough idea of the level of the main stock indexes and EUR/USD, Oil and maybe Gold.

noob

i've asked this before, but does anyone have a case study for their final round? i have to do a presentation and have an interview based on this case study. i swear its only me that has to do this lol.

kingfisher1980

EYT,

Thanks heaps for all the help in answering a barage of questions from our side.

I am preparing for the AC numerical test and wanted to ask a little about the test itself. You have already written a little about it in a previous post but I would specifically like to know about the exchange rate questions (that is if you still remember their format). I think this part of the test is my weakest area and I wanted to get an understanding from you in terms of what to expect. I would greatly appreciate if you can kindly briefly write about the format and level of difficulty of these questions.

Thanks

eyt

what division did you apply to noob? I've never heard of any case study at deutsche before, although a friend of mine last year had a group exercise.

zhangji: I don't think you necessarily have to read the FT everyday, at the moment the financial crisis is in the general news everyday anyway, so maybe just reading up on bbc website and bit of FT. As long as you have a good understanding of whats been going on, why its all happened and how governments are trying to fix this etc as well as have some knowledge of the banking systems and deutsche's position within this. If you have any specific information about deutsche or any specific news stories that you can tell the interviewers about which you can also maybe relate to your own interests etc that would be good.

kingfisher: I can't really remember too well tbh, but I think there were only a handful of exchange rate questions (if any!). I'd imagine you will get a table with different rates for say the pound, at different time points. The question will ask you to calculate the value of a certain amount of money in one currency at one specific point, but then at a later point in time in a different currency. So you will need to do the exchange calculation twice e.g. the values in the table are for pounds, you buy yen and sell dollars, so you convert from yen -> pounds -> dollar. But you'll also have to take into account the time value of the currency, so ? pounds today will be worth ? pounds tomorrow. I think this is as hard is it will be (hopefully you understand what I was trying to say!). In any case, if you think you can't do it, then just skip and do the next question. I did come across some which I couldn't figure out so just left or guessed. As long as you work through quickly but accurately then don't worry. Also don't worry if you don't finish the test, I left out around the last 5 or maybe more questions.

Good luck

zhangji

Hi eyt: Thank you so much for your kind help.

Yaswan

Hi, I've got a first interview for a technnology analyst position this tuesday, can anyone whos already had the interview for the technology role tell me if I should expect technical, economically focused questions and what they would be?

kkhimji2001

for a graduate with no experience, is it easier to secure an internship than an analyst position ( I do not think I can apply for both an analyst and internship position)

thc207

Hi eyt: Congrats on the offer!!! Also, I would like to ask you some questions about the second interview.

I will have the interview for GTO analyst soon. But HR recruiter just told me to be there aroud 2:15pm and the interview will end at 4:00pm. It seems that the time won't be enough for the test and 3 interviews. Did they give you an interview package to help you understand the detail about the interview?? Besides, for the numerical test, can you give a suggestion on how to prepare for it?? Thank you so much!! :)

san

Hi eyt, I ahve the same question regarding the final round at deutsche bank. I am selected for the role of technology analyst. So what are the type of questions dat i would be asked. Is it purely technical? based on my technical skillls? or fiance questions. Also could you tell me more bout the numerical test. Thank you,

eyt

I don't think it will necessarily be easier to secure an internship rather than a graduate role. However, I think it will definitely be less competitive for internships as banks like to fill in their graduate positions from the summer intern pool. I know that for this year, UBS are only hiring grads into just one or two front office divisions like IBD and sales and trading, and the rest they have filled with previous interns. That said they've also just laid off some of their grads only a few weeks into training! I'd say apply for more internships if you can as it'll be easier to secure a job after graduating by this route.

The interviews lasted 30min each with usually around 5 minutes or less between each one, so I'd think 1hr45min is enough only for the interviews.. for my final round I arrived for 8am and left at around 11.30am! The email itself if i remember had an outline/timeline of what was going to happen, so arrive 8am, test 8-9am interviews 10-11.30am etc other than that there wasn't much information. The numerical test is just a paper version of the online test, although slightly harder. Its psl, you get a question booklet answer sheet and rough paper, and you need to bring your own calculator. Work quickly and accurately and don't waste time on any one question and also don't worry if you don't finish the test.

95% of the questions I was asked were competency based - there were hardly any technical or commercial focus type questions. Although I'm not too sure for the technology interviews as mine was for ops. You should definitely prepare to answer any questions relating to your degree e.g. what skills have you developed. For this you should base your answer around the usual competencies and use your degree experiences - eg lab work is very technical and involves high attention to detail, concentration, analytical thinking and problem solving skills. The best way to prepare in general is to just have all the competencies covered, be prepared to adapt your answers depending on the question and also research DB as much as poss.

Hope this helps.

thc207

Hello eyt: Thank you so much!!!!! It helped a lot!! :)

eyt, thanks very much for your suggestion. I just got an offer from Deutsche Bank, GTO, technology.

HBK_007

Hi EYT,

I have got an interview call for GTO-Technology at DB. Can you give any advice. I was also wondering about the specific competencies that DB might be interested.

phamanhviet

Hi all,

I had a wonderful summer internship at DB this summer (Aug -> Oct) in Frankfurt / Eschborn. And I have been selected for the GTP 2009 at GTO.

I got good feedbacks from the First Round Interview with 6 GTO representatives in 3 interviews on 4th Oct 2008, and I am passed for the second/final round.

However, because my German is so bad that the GTP managers suggest to forward my application to an English-speaking country. And LONDON is the location I prefer.

And you know what, I just received an invitation from Graduate Recruiter on 26th of Nov for the GTO SECOND Round interview on FRIDAY 28th Nov. Unfortunately, He/She is not aware that I am holding a NON-EU National passport, therefore to enter UK I need a VISA :(

It's really not possible to get the VISA within 2days!

1. I want to ask you if anybody here got the invitation just 2,3 days before the Assessment day? And also anybody from NON-EU nationals like me, and how long did it take u for the VISA????

Furthermore, the HR lady said to me that: this FRIDAY 28th Nov is most likely the LAST Assessment Day for GTP 2009 in LONDON :(, if All the positions are filled, then nothing left for me :(((((((((((((((((((( otherwise I will be invited nex FRIDAY 5 of DEC.

2. Can anybody tell me usually HOW MANY candidates are invited on FRIDAY ? And what is percentage ? passed ? failed? ????

3. I have no idea what should I SAY / ASK if no CHANCE for me ---> very sad !

Any information / suggestion from YOU is much appreciate.

And I wish any member of Wikijob who going to the Assessment TOMORROW BEST OF LUCK !
