CK

hi monty,

thanks

ck

monty

I had

1. Which qualities & skills do you possess that make you suited to the role to which you have applied?

2.From the research that you have done on our industry, how does Barclays Capital differentiate itself from our opponent?

3.Describe a recent development in the Investment Banking industry. What implications might this development have for the division to which you have applied?

about the answers i wudnt wanna giv them totally, my applications still under consideration.

but number 1 is easy, for 2 i wrote about the business model and 3 i wrote about the current economic climate, BOE's decision to buy more guilts, whilst it seems globally economies are picking up, uncertainty etc.

anyway good luck let me know how you go

IBD_Haunter

from what I know, I dont they are holding any interview in August, they start in September i think

monty

How would anyone rate a 2.1 BA Hons in Economics from University of Leicester, for this role?

Good - Average - Below Average?

IBD_Haunter

Below Average
- not a target university
- If had a first, it would have been better
- any work experience in IBD or related fields? - if so, then that will push you up.

monty

Did 3 month internship at Marks and spencer finance thats it!

cheers was looking for an honest opinion

mrclochard

Hi guys,

I applyed for an analyst full time position in Investment Banking in London. I passed the numerical test and then I made the verbal one. Do you guys know how long does it take to have a feedback?

IBD_Haunter

@ monty.
You can apply to BarCap Finance role (back-office), but NOT for the Corporate Finance (or IBD) roles (front-office).
You will have a fair chance at the back-office role and almost no chance at the Front-office role.
The M&S internship will definitely help you in the back-office Finance role....... should give it a try!!

@mrclochard
If you had failed the verbal test, they would rejected you automatically!! Since, that didnt happen, it means that you have passed the tests!! I dont think, BarCap will get back to anyone before Sept atleast!
Did you apply for the Summer Internship of Full-time Analyst? If summer intern, then you will have to wait a lot longer, coz they would want to get through the Full-time positions first and then move on to the summer interns..... so summer interns - late November.....

mrclochard

Nice to know IBD_Haunter...I applied for a full-time position....so let's wait! Thanks for the informations!

monty

Yea i did the tests too, havent had a response wait til sept i suppose.

zuperzuper

hey!
poeple who have taken BarCap tests...could you please rate them (difficulty level) versus the ones on shl..would be really helpful...have to take them before sunday...just want to prepare my mind :)

also would be helpful if u could tell me what all sections were there and how long were the tests...
one last point ive heard that once u move on u cannot go back to a question...let me knw if that is true!

thanks!

Itua

Hi guys,

I'm also applying to Barclays capital...and ive come up with the same questions as before. I just want to know what my chances are just like monty has asked before. Ibd_Haunter seems to know very much about this whole process.

Well here it goes...

1st class Mathematics (Bsc) - University of Hertfordshire. No internships.... Just adminstrative jobs over the last two years

Plz id appreciate a response.

jalabana

Hi Guys - Just a quick one.

Im applying for the FT IB position in Sydney, Australia.

Got through the numerical tests and received an email straight away saying I met the requirements and I was through to the verbal reasoning test. I did that test yesterday and received an email "your application is under consideration".

Should I assume that I have not got through given that I didnt receive a "Congratulations" email after the second tests? Is this consistent with what you guys have been receiving?

IBD_Haunter

@ Itua - First in Maths! That's awesome! Only if you had some revelant work experience/internship. To be honest, I wouldnt suggest that you apply for the full-time position. You have a better chance in the Summer Internship programme, and since you have been working in admin for 2yrs, I dont think, you qualify for the grad programme (but I might be wrong). If I were in your shoes, then would continue working for another year, and get into an MBA programme at a target uni. Then apply to BarCap for associate role!!

@ jalabana - that's consistent, they dont send any congrats email after the verbal, but if you had failed, then they would have sent a rejection email.

jalabana

Thanks IBD_Haunter. I can at least enjoy my weekend now.

@zuperzuper, its a shl test. i found the numerical more difficult than the verbal.
i did the practice test on this website and thought it was sufficient preparation for the test. the practice test on the shl website are far too time consuming.

Itua

Oh kl...thanks IBD_Haunter..but i'll still try my luck with the graduate programee..Oh yer.i'm applying to the Quantitative analytic role, which requires a strong mathematical background. Anyway in the application form, i cant see this job role listed, but i can see everything else. am i misssin something??

IBD_Haunter

I am not sure about BarCap, not every firm recruits directly into that role and not everywhere!

slickmasta

hi IBD_haunter - the email from barclays states to practice online tests for familiarity on their website, i cudn find d link... if not you can please somebody help, much appreciated...
also i practised the shl test but d result din show up, my status bar der says report generating .... and despite loggin in and out it hasnt updated... could anyone advise on dat too please ...

many tks.

IBD_Haunter

@ slickmasta ----- If you want to practise some tests, then use this link. Its from Imperial College Business School. Btw, I dont go to Imperial!!
As for your problem with getting the results, I think there is some problem with your browser or computer..... nothing wrong with the test itself.....

http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/business-school/currentstudents/careers/career_process/accessingopportunities/psychometric/onlinetests

stanik

Hi!!!
I gonna apply at BarCap for a graduate program too. Does anybody know when the application deadline is for this program?

Many thanks for ya help

Itua

Hey Stanik...the deadline is Nov 2009, dont know wen to be precise....best start now lol

CK

hey monty

Thanks for that i have the same 3 questions.

Ive just managed to finish the answers, how long does it take once you have submitted the application?
Have you the tests? if so which ones?

Thanks for the replys

Ck

slickmasta

cheers for d quick reply ibd !!!

IBD_Haunter

@ CK --- the tests are available instanstaneous after you submit the application unless you applied last year and passed the tests then!

monty

IBD is right, straight after i submitted i got the link for the numerical test and then i got the link for the verbal reasoning one.

good luck, do i a little practice first if your rusty.

Aj

Hi everyone

- I applied for the Graduate Finance role on the 20th August and have not heard anything since. My application is still under consideration! Is it a good idea to send them an email and ask regarding the progress?
- I have graduated from London Metropolitan with a 1st + Distinction in Accounting & Finance. I have interned for Lehman Brothers Corporate Advisory ( two weeks) during my first year; worked for Marks and Spencer during my second year and currently interning for a Mangement Consultancy. What are my chances of securing a graduate role?

Many thanks
Aj

IBD_Haunter

@ Aj ------ Graduate Finance (as in back office or IBD?), in any case, they are not going to call anyone for interview until September/October!
The Lehman Brothers insight week and the management consultancy internship should help a bit!

Aj

Thank you IBD_Haunter; I have not even been invited to do the numerical reasoning or verbal reasoning tests. Is that normal? I beleive some of the users here have taken their numerical+verbal tests.
Aj

IBD_Haunter

@ Aj ----- have you applied to BarCap before? If so, did you do the tests then? If yes, then they took the scores from your previous test since you passed that one!

On the otherhand, if you never applied to BarCap and never gave the tests before at BarCap, then I have no clue! Usually the tests are instantaneous once your submit the application. In that case, you better email them. usually they are very prompt and helpful.

rpatel789

Hi guys + girls,

I am trying to complete the application form for a graduate finance analyst position for Barclays Capital 2010 intake.
The question regarding - A recent development in the investment banking industry and how this will affect my service line.

Are the following topics a "recent IB development"?

Quantitative easing, BoE buying gilts? i am stuggling to see how these can affect the finance department. Any tips please, or areas i can look into.

Thankyou

RK

monty

If you cant see how the above topic is relevant mayb you should READ and find your own development?

Pretty sure the manager at Barclays isnt looking for you to research on Wiki jobs how about THE FINANCIAL TIMES possibly the INVESTMENT BANKING section, just a thought.

berto99999

Hello IBD Haunter, looking for an honest answer as well, I have a years work experience in MO for a top tier investment bank a 2.1 in and economics/finance degree however, not from red brick uni. looking to apply for FO position

IBD_Haunter

@ berto99999 --- give it a shot mate! If you are still working the MO, then if you make it through, then you can switch to FO.... if not, then you can stay with your current job.

Some insight from Deutsche Bank.... this is how they screen their apps (an insider told me, I cant confirm the authenticity if this but this is what he told me)...... they screen out applications from the Target universities and go through them first..... while they do this, they put all the other applications from all other universities on HOLD...... once the target university applications has been screened and interviews given out..... they fill out the remaining interview slot from those applications which were on HOLD......

From Bank of America Merrill Lynch - almost the same as DB.... they actually named their target unis.... Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, Imperial.... (this is their Top5)..... this what a HR Manager told me directly.....

But, in your case, since you are already working in the MO of a top tier i-bank, you should have better chance.... try it out mate! which division you applying for? IBD? S&T?

berto99999

IBD Haunter, thanks for that, yes I am still currently working within MO and looking to apply for S&T division. Thought it would be the case with the top tier unis which is the slight concern I had however, as you said with the experience and currently working within the enviroment was hoping that would help to counter act that

IBD_Haunter

@ berto99999 ----- remember, when you make it to the interview stage, you will have to make sure that you have good enough reasons for wanting to do S&T instead of the current MO role..... also, you gotta be prepared to questions like - why did you choose the MO in the first place? why didnt you go for S&T straight away? - and when they ask you that, you cant really reply saying that you didnt go to a target uni (they wont really accept that answer).

berto99999

Yep agree with that totally, my honest reason was at the time I knew I wanted a career within an Investment Bank but was unclear of which area I would like to work in whether it was IB, Asset Management or Sales/Trading. I felt that it was in my best interest as I had not taken an internship to gain a better corporate understanding of the various areas whilst gaining some experience in order to then apply to the right area after completing research and networking in the past year which has been very beneficial. Would that come across as a valid reason? If I am lucky enough to receive an interview, are the UK ones firstly telephone?

slickmasta

do u ve to write a verbal reasoning test right away or can one do it later if wished ???

slickmasta

that is ofcourse if u passed d numerical..

mrclochard

@ berto99999: I feel exactly in that way: I know I want a career in an Investment Bank but I don't have much knowledge about the divisions etc, moreover...can I ask you what you mean with "gain a better corporate understanding of the various areas whilst gaining some experience in order to then apply to the right area after completing research and networking in the past year which has been very beneficial", what did you do?

jmrasjid

Hi. Just want to confirm with everyone. IBD said they will start calling people for interviews around Sep/Oct, but does anyone know if there's an exact date when the 2010 program will start? or it totally depends with each applicant?

jmrasjid

No you can take it anytime you want within the 5 days of your application submission.

IBD_Haunter

2010 grad programme will start in last week of June (I think)........ the 2009 started in last week of June....

and usually, everyone has to start together because you have to go through the same training!

CK

Hi everyone,

I completed the numercal and then was invited for verbal which i compeleted. Now when i log in it says application under considersation.

Does that mean i have passed the verbal as i did not get an email after sayin sorry i have failed.

Is the next stage interviews or application screening?

Thanks

CK

IBD_Haunter

@ CK -- yes, you have passed! If you didnt do well, you would have been rejected straigh away!

The next stage is application screening!

stanik

Hi CK,
Could kindly give some examples from the numerical and verbal tests you have recently done since it is just while ago and you may probably still remember them!!!

VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

Thanks
Stanik

CK

hi

they are SHL, go on there website and do practice examples also wikijob have examples aswell.

Preety normal maths adding sub multiplying! etc!

example: work out the gdp of india, has a list of facts for india and u have 2 use that in order to obtain ur answer.

CK

hi

verbal is simple luk at passage see if the answer to question is there. true false or canot say!

wizegurl

I seem to be seeing many people worried about what university they went to before deciding which area to apply to, don not let this be the decider of which areas to apply to. Barclay's Capital is one of the least discriminatory banks out there in reference to which university you attended as long as you can show genuine interest in the role and have maintained strong academic results you should have no problem.
FYI I know this as I just went through their internship program and have been offered a full time role for 2010.
Goodluck!

tommy_86

Do you need 300 UCAS points to apply to Bar Cap?

z3129990

hey all:

I've just applied for the 2010 fulltime graduate program in sydney, having no experience form an investment bank (i've worked at a strategic analyst at the commonwealth bank, and now i'm working at a mangement consulting firm).

should i have applied for the internship instead? did i bite off more than i can chew?
