Aviva interview

Has anyone had an interview with Aviva for the Actuarial Grad Programme? They say it's a strengths based interview...Does anyone know how that differs from a competency based interview? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Sobotka

I have mine on 19/11/2009 so if yours is later you can wait for my post.

irina_v860

Mine is on 23rd, next Monday... I would really appreciate any advice. Good luck with your interview!!!

Hi

Can anyone PM me the graduate recruitment email for Aviva please

I need to know my test scores.

messierchippy

At least now you don't have to worry about the Aviva boss stealing away your girlfriend or boyfriend.

irina_v860

Hi Mildaa! I am sorry to hear it didn't go very well. I have the interview on monday and I'm really scared now. Before the strengths questions, they only ask about "why aviva" ?

irina_v860

And...can you ask questions at the end?

mildaa

Don't be scared!!!!!!!! Its prob just me who freaks out during interview especially on the phone. They ask why aviva somewhere in the middle. They also asked if I enjoy meeting new people, if you communicate differently with different people, did you meet anyone last week and so on. And no she didnt let me ask any questions at the end. I thought its strainge as well.

baike

I am having an interview tomorrow morning, will see what is it like. Hope those questions which mildaa stated will come up as I am prepared for them. Will tell you my feedback afterwards.

irina_v860

Hi!
Thanks for your help shen! I have the interview later. Indeed, this type of interview is slightly different...you have to think on your feet and you cannot prepare much for it.

@baike...what time do you have your interview?

baike

Well I am after an interview. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great experience. However, I am not sure about the outcome, it just depends whether they liked my personality or not. Will tell you more after the results come in (in a week). Just a natural sense of competition.
Mine lasted around 33 minutes (not even close to 15 mins). Did not ask the question whether i met someone last week? there were all the questions stated in the previous posts and some more.
Had an opportunity to ask questions in the start before all the structured questions began.
It was nothing like talking to the answer machine. She was really nice and laughed in some places together with me when I was talking about my own experience. I doubt there is anything to be afraid of.
They will also record your conversation.
How was yours Irina? I am just wondering if there is only one person who is interviewing as my was really nice.

I had a telephone interview with Aviva around a month ago and was told I had been successful and was invited to an assessment centre. I didn't hear anything else back until today when they said the application process has been changed and I now have a second phone interview with someone from the actuarial team. Has this happened to anybody else? What does this mean?

irina_v860

That's weird...in the beginning of this month I went to a graduate fair and talked with one of their employees who said after the interview there will be a 2-day assessment centre. I never heard about a 2nd interview but I guess they just decided to change it as the first one was too general.

gstilgoe, you had the same type of interview?...strengths based, weird questions? How long will the second one be?

gstilgoe

My first one was exactly as described by mike before my post...sort of strengths-based but with some unusual questions as well. I also met somebody at a careers event and they told me it would only be one interview before the assessment centre. Today is the first I have heard of the second interview. The best advice I can give is to just be aware of your strengths and any difficult situations you have dealt with and be prepared to answer anything. If anybody can give me some idea of what this second interview is about or why we have to do it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

hie guys, I know this question is in the wrong section, but i just wanted to ask what sort of numerical test Aviva does for their graduate scheme. I applied for accountancy. I have just been invited to do one you see, is it SHL or PSL/kenexa? and also how many questions shall i expect and the time? I did be grateful for any insight from anyone whose done it. thank you.

P.S. Goodluck with all your interviews and assessments

irina_v860

It's an SHL test; as far as I remember the numerical one was 21 questions in 21 minutes and for the verbal I don't remember exactly. Anyway, if you've done SHL type tests before you know what to expect.

Good luck!

tafa263

Thank You, Irina.....

So just to clarify, how much commercial awarness am I supposed to have when applying for this job? I'm gonna take the numerical test tommorow, then hopefully i'll get myself an interview. How much about the insurance world am I supposed to know? A few key facts off of the Aviva site, or should I spend as much time as possible reading various websites and newspapers to immerse myself?

For the online test, there is the numerical one, but is there the one where you have to read short paragraphs and answer questions based on it as well?

irina_v860

You won't be asked any commercial awareness question about insurance in the interview. They barely ask you "why Aviva?" and that's all, really. So, at least for the interview you don't need to know anything about insurance.

For the tests...you have the numerical test and the verbal one...which is standard...a paragraph and several True/False/Cannot know questions.

irina_v860

I didn't get it either but it didn't come as a surprise (I was kind of expecting it)...It was by far the most difficult interview I've had so far and I didn't feel very comfortable with answering those questions. I know it might now sound like a "sour grapes" matter, but I don't think those are the relevant questions to ask for this kind of position. It's just a matter of luck and how chatty and imaginative you are on the spot.
And yeah, I think you have to give relevant examples and to make sure you emphasize your STRENGTHS along the way...Apparently, that's what they're trying to figure out...Anyway, overall, it was good experience.

mildaa

I didnt got throught either. Wasnt much of a suprise though :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD. i m so never getting insurance with aviva. just joking! I will get the insurance and then Ill clain the highest amount possible. :DDDDDD again just joking.

Sobotka

I've been asked to do a second interview, nearly three weeks after my last one. I was wondering if anyone else has had to do this second interview.

gstilgoe

Sobokta, I have been asked to do one too (see my earlier post). Mine is on Monday. Did they give you a reason for having to do a second interview?
Good Luck! Grace

p2

has anyone has a first interview recently? has the format changed? Or does any1 mind going over what sort of questions were asked in the second interview

Sobotka

I wasn't told why I had to do a second one, I thought the next stage was the assessment centre. Grace how was the second interview and is it really 60 minutes?

gstilgoe

Sobotka, I wasn't given a reason either although I assume it's because the first one had no questions related to actuarial work. They will ask about what you think you will be doing as an actuarial trainee and they want to know how much you know about the exams etc. If you really want to be an actuary you will be fine and it will be stuff you've looked into anyway so don't worry about it. It's not 60 mins either, when the lady called me she said it would be 20-30 and it was.

p2

any info on what other questions they ask in second interview?

Dax

Thanks to everyone's post... just had my phone interview for the accoutancy scheme @ 12, finished @ 12.50 confirmation for asses. cent @ 13.04!!

Let me know if I can be any help re questions etc. but they asked me pretty much everything that was on this page.

Thanks again!!

a.shahid

Hi everyone. I have applied for the Actuarial Grad programme. Reading about the kind of weird questions that have been asked in these posts has really made me nervous. Hey Dax. Could you let me know about the questions that were asked of you during your interview today. I would really appreciate it. Thanks

a.shahid

Is it a competency based interview?? Would I need to gives examples of my experiences to demonstrate these competencies? Also I thought that structured interviews had always the same questions so how come they have been asking different questions from different candiadates?

Any help would be really appreciated!!

Thanks

Dax

I think they have a list some are specific to the role little bit of awarness, like for accountancy - what do you know about the credit crunch. (I THINK!!) more so I think they just have a list and choose random questions, run through them, loads of questions 3/4 mins per question, they are eager to jump in and make you move on if you are taking to long.

Not competency Strengths, so they ask are you a leader in a team, yes/no but make sure you elaborate and say an example of this is be specific and to the point dont ramble on, they wont ask you for an example, as the guy said on the phone he can only ask the questino and not interpet it so they will not tell you what they are asking for.

I would make a list of the possible questions from this site, which is what i did and just write a brief one liner on a past experience, helped me just for guidance and then you can elaborate on it on the phone.

Sometime they will say 'describe' which is when i would focus on an example. But try not sticking to yes no, e.g. do you like buying presents could be a simple yes no but i also said yes as it keeps up relationships/networks, they then ask how you choose the presents and u can go into a little more depth analyse etc.

Hey,

just had my telephone interview for the business management programme...had most of the questions above but also "how do you feel about deadlines?", "when you have a plan, and then have to change it, how do you feel?", "when deadlines change how do you feel?" and "have you ever missed a deadline?"... oh and I got the credit crunch question too, so I guess its all schemes!!

I have absolutely no idea how it went!! It lasted about 25 minutes...but I used examples for everything and expanded on everything...fingers crossed!!

Good luck to everyone who has one coming up :)

rajsiva

Hi ppl, Could sum1 confirm me whether you only get invited to do the verbal test if you pass the numerical test or do u completed both and then they will tell u the result?

anfgrad2009

Hi rajsiva,

usually you take both of the tests and then you are told whether you are successful.

If you practice the format and different types of questions your performance will improve dramatically (that's what I found anyway!!)

good luck

gstilgoe

Hi rajsiva,

In the case of the actuarial scheme, they only ask you to take the verbal test if you are successful in the numerical one.

Best of luck

G-host

Hi Dax,

When did u apply, when did u take the assessment and how long did it take u to get a feedback back on ur performance? Will it be ok if I ask u to share ur experience pls?

Thanks

Sorry to say but ......AVIVA is the most stupid company ...i av ever applied to...i cleared their telephone interview and they even send me a confirmation of that and assured me that i will be invited for an assesment center....but after waiting for 3 months..they emailed me saying we are sorry but we cant progress ur application further..we av closed our IT recruitement......i am well disappointed.....

Hi all,
I applied for Claims with AVIVA and now regret not finding this chat before my interview last month.
But I can only agree that sometimes they may be hard to get their acts together.
i really did enjoy my phone interview, it's a bit longer but i had good stories to tell and it worked out well. They sent me an invitation for AC after less than 2w.
However, there's nothing like that At the day I only got through their stress-based interview. It's somewhat like 'testing a cold water' -no warming -up questions or sth like 'why you'd like to be here', some questions were really like 'pluck out of the air' and made me uneasy. The interview patterns may be hard to follow, i was either interrupted or urged to go further in details. No surpise i didn't make it at the end!
I suppose they practise some stress interview techniques but i felt it doesn't bring the best of me.
Anyway, no AVIVA for me too.
