National Grid Tel Interview
Hi, I have a tel interview with national grid for their commercial
scheme. Can anyone offer any information?
Thanks in advance.
Well I had an interview before Xmas, been waiting till now and still no news about my application. I checked on the website for my application status but it just said In Process/ Pre-Screen. Odd though cause I already got through to the telephone interview!
How did the interview go? What were some of the questions you got? Any help will be appreciated.. Thanks
Hi~! Has anyone heard any feedback of their engineering graduate scheme? Thanks~!
same here~
I applied engneering grad scheme, my tel interview is at 28 Jan. Did you finished that?
Hope this helps. I had my interview sometime ago. Generally a pleasant experience. The interviewer sounded nice throughout which helps to keep you relaxed. The interview itself was less structured than others i've experienced. The interviewer seemed to be interested in what you were saying with a number of probing questions regarding things you may have just said. So u really ought to know what you are saying and dont try to bluff your way through. The probing helps to bring out points you may have missed in the competencies such as The specific results of your action and what you would do differently etc. Interview took about 40 minutes. I was encouraged to take time and think about my responses which was good.
------The interview questions were made up of a couple of expected general questions that all companies will ask-
Why did you apply to N.G.? (Probed further about your preparation for the interview itself and a couple of things about the sources used).
What info did you find about the operations of the company from your sources? (ie what do u know about the company)
-----And then 3 competency questions which you were allowed to skip and come back to. The competency questions based on those mentioned on the company's website in the FAQ. In case you missed that its here http://www.nationalgrid.com/freshtalent/about/faq/Graduate/compentencies.htm
I think i was asked about three of them (I should warn you that as much as possible prepare for other questions that could be asked under these competencies):
Building Relationships - Leadership role in a team environment - Basically a time u worked in a team...
Business & Strategic Awareness - Describe a recent business magazine or book you read... I got confused with that. I'll suggest u ask what they mean by a business magazine.
Developing Self or Planning to Achieve (Dont remember which it was)- A time when you developed/came up with a creative way of doing something or a creative solution..(Dont remember correctly)
-----And then questions for the interviewer.
NB: Again beware of the probing questions. Know ur responses inside out.
Hope someone finds this useful... But make sure you dont beat me to the job tho ok.. lol
Thanks kokojobs for the information. I am going to have the telephone interview on the first of February. I wish you all good luck with application process!
Hi kokojobs,
I am wondering if you got through with the telephone interview. If so, did you attend their assessment centre? I have one comingon the 9th of feb and all they've told me is that it would include "an interview, presentation, group exercises". I called them up to ask if its going to be a competancy based interview or a technical one. They said we can only provide you with the same information as sent via email and nothing more.
If anyone else has attended the assessment centre, your feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I am not working for National Grid. I realised that they have to finish their assessents before July to start in September. If you didn't get any response from them you can call them or email and ask as what is you application status?.
Thanks
Hi Everyone,
You guys are really helpful – especially Koko jobs,
I applied for the Commercial scheme and completed my telephone interview , I was told the assessment centre will be in Warwick and I will be notified in 3 weeks time.
I am bit nervous – could anyone who have already been to commercial assessment centre let me know how long it took for them to get back to you?
I don’t know how well I did ….i think I was 75% OK
And thank you
If all of you were told the assessment centre will be in July - I do look forward to seing you all (if I pass the telephone interview), as you all seem like a nice bunch :-)
Hi 2bornot2b,

I dont know how quick they are at responding?!?!

Good luck :)
Hi,
Does anyone have any advise on the assesment center?
What tasks are there, any tips or what to prepare?
It will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Hi weird-prit,
Not yet , I was told it will take 3 weeks and therfore wait till end of July.
What was the assessment centre like ? I hear you have to do Business Case and such as well as presentation and an Interview ...
Thank You ;-)
Thanks 2bornot2b.
When did you have your Assessment centre? I had mine on the 24th July and they said 2 weeks from there. It's two weeks today exactly and still no answer, so I'm still waiting.
All the best :)
Thanks 2bornot2b.

Hi Weird-prit ,
You mean you had yours on the 24th June ?
I still havent had mine - I have only completed my telephone interview. And they advised it will be at the end of this month , so I am awaiting a response.
What was the assesment centre like ? If you don't mind me asking...
Thank You , All the best :-)
Hi 2bornot2b,
Yes, I had my Assessment centre on the 24th June.
It was an intense two days where they give you overnight accommodation and pay for your meals.
On the first afternoon you have to sit thru a presentation and are given time to prepare a presentation on a given scenario. This then follows up to tea time where you get to meet the assessors who will be monitoring you on the second day. The first day is unassessed so do not worry too much, although be a bit weary of your surroundings.
The second day in the morning are your presentations followed by a group exercise. Both are pretty intense and you will get questions which are challenging and patronising - but dont be put off. After this will be lunch time followed by interviews which are in a panel and last up to an hour. Finally thats the end of the assessment.
Which programme are you applying for again - Commercial, Property or Engineering?
Hope this helps and all the best - Good Luck!
Thank you, so its mainly based on group work and presentation(s)
(as well as the Interview I guess).
I am applying for commercial
Thank you for the information prit :-)
I also applied for Commercial. I rang them up yesterday as it had been two weeks and they said they hadn't decided yet.
You're welcome :)
- -) I hope we both get the Job
then i could meet all the nice people -including yourself ... it will be easy to with such people as well..
That would be nice!
I'm sure you'll be fine with your assessment centre. Just be confident and passionate and it'll be okay.
A tip - "You already have the job - its yours to lose" - Told by a NG employee!
Hi guys,
what are the likely technical questions one can be asked during National Grid telephone interview?
I have the interview very soon...any hints will be hgigly appreciated
Had y telephone interview today and it was pretty intense. It also did not help because the guy on the phone seemed to be in a hurry even though we managed to finish after 30 mins(they said it would take 45). Thank you Kokojobs. Your help is much appreciated. Hope ill get to the assessment centre though, would be gutted if I dont. The company also told me that there are delays with processing applications and I might not here back for a while. Not impressed
Had my phone interview a few hours ago and thought I would post on here as it has been helpful for me!
First experience of a phone interview and was a little daunting, but the guy I had was really nice. He explained at the start that it would last 30-40 minutes and that he had to type some notes so to bare with him.
Some of the questions I was asked:
- Why have you applied for NG?
- What do you know about NG - MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH, I felt my answer could have been better for this!! They want to see enthusiasm!
- do you read any Business magazines?
- explain a situation where you have been given feedback and how you acknowledged this and worked on the issues.
- explain a time when you have had to be creative in order to resolve an issue.
- demonstrate when you have been a team leader.
Pretty standard competency based questions. My advice would be to make sure you have examples and write them down, but also what you learnt from those examples also as they seem to be looking for 'growth'
hope that helps :)
Good luck all!
I had a telephone interview today. It was quite quick. About 25 minutes. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing. They told me it would be at least 6 weeks before I hear because of the huge number of applications they received.
Has anyone else applied for the October 2010 intake? I looked at the EDF graduate scheme and the application is almost identical :-|
Wonder if they would give feedback on how I scored, if I were to ask ...
Had my Telephone interview last week, I found it very good overall - the Lady I spoke to was really helpful, and there wasnt anything too tricky involved.
I think it lasted about 20 minutes. Fingers crossed i passed :)
i had telephone interview with them and they have not said anything as well.i have called them all they were saying is that my application is still with the assessment centre.i dont know why they are doing this
Hi all, this is my first post.
I applied for the Construction engineer program based in East Midlands on 6/3/11 but havent yet heard anything back. My question is, has anyone else applied for this same position and are now attending the assesment. I'd just like to know if perhaps i'm unsuccessful this time i can put my mind to rest and hopefully something else might turn up. thanks in advance for any replies.
I applied for the advanced apprenticeship at Stalybridge around end of March 2011. I completed and sent off the situational judgement test but haven't heard anything since. Anyone else in the same boat? Am I just being impatient?

Hi, I had a telephone interview on the 25th August 2011 for the Commercial development program.
The questions I were asked were along the lines of:
Where did you hear about the programme?
Name a role model. (Leads to many probing questions)
Name someone you have a strong bond with outside of friends and family (More questions).
Name a time where you worked with new people and had to present something to them.
Name a time where you led or organised something.
Pretty tough I found it. But think I answered okay, fingers crossed!
Hi everybody!!!
Just a few hours back i finished my telephonic interview...for technical programme..the questions now they are asking been changed for my amazement!!!!
Here are the questions
1. Reason for applying for National grid.??..this question haven't changed!!
2. The person who inspired you a lot in your life?
3. The way you acknowledged with your manager about your work in the last company you worked ..not only company....any where?
4. This question is about communication about person whom you met apart from family and friends???
5. The last one is about the team work you has participated in your past ..and what are the challenges you face and did you got any appreciations for your work you has been done in your team?
These are the questions i been asked actually .....but i have got only for the first question other than that everything is new and i hope i done it OK ....who know what will happen ...lets see!!!

Missed this message in November - how did your interview go? Were you successful?!
