National Grid Assessment Center

Hi,

I applied to National Grid's engineering graduate scheme and passed the telephone interview stage. I have an assessment center coming on the 9th of feb and all they've told me is that it would include "an interview, presentation, group exercises". I called them up to ask if its going to be a competancy based interview or a technical one. They said we can only provide you with the same information as sent via email and nothing more.

If anyone has attended their assessment centre, could you tell me what happened on the day? your feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi,

According to my invite the interview is behavoural/competancy based so doubt there will be any technical questions. They might bring some technical stuff into the group tasks but I think all the information needed for those is provided. I'm actually going on tues so will see u there. Good luck!

Tom.

grounded7

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info. Saved me from preparing tons of technical stuff. Anyway I'll see you tomorrow. All the best!

milnerts

Do you know about the 4 competancies? I think they will assess you against them:

o Managing Oneself
o Planning to Achieve
o Working with Others
o Business Awareness

So prepare a few examples of times you demonstrated the first three. As for business awareness, I'm not expecting anything too deep. As you'll probably know there's heaps of info on their website, also the wikipedia pages provide good summaries.

grounded7

That's what they, sort of, mentioned in their email. Though when I called them up to ask whether its going to be a technical or a competancy based interview, they replied 'we're still not sure of it and it would be better if you prepare for them both'. And you're right about their website, I was explicitly told to look into their website. I think that should be sufficient for the business and strategic awareness.

how was your assesment centre like?

Hi, I've got an AC coming but I am not sure if I want to work for NG.
What are your impressions? Is it a good company to work for?

vinny

Heyy everyone,

I have just received the Situational Judgement Questionnaire to complete and I was hoping to get some advice as how to go about it. I will be really grateful if anyone who went through it could enlighten me on this.

Thanks again..Much appreciated!

Vinny!

just be confident.....and the competencies on their website will be treated......questions about NG will also be asked like how do we make profit who is the regulator, what are their challenges.......for the group stage just try and show the ability to plan and get involved with others do not dominate or be dormant also listen to others while they speak and try and contribute ideas...it is a quite interesting excercise in the line of manufacturing.......for the business case try and be fast cos you willl hav a lot to read within 90mins make sure you do all the cost calculations and make a good 10mins presentation also take into consideration health and safety and environmental conditions while making your decisions....try and make your jottings neat. I hope this helps.

davidyork00

Thanks a lot Tom for the information.

Think it's about being put into a scenario and you explaining what you would do in this scenario, and how you would do it etc - but it's multiple choice so not too taxing.

Have you done it yet?

lauradan

Hi all, good luck for your AC this week!
I have applied for an industrial placement with them and have been invited to AC but they have confused me with their email. Email says 8.45 - 4 but the link shows 3.30 - 4.30. Would be a long way to travel for me for one hour! Am due to phone them again tomorrow to find out what's going on but could be going up for assessment on 22nd Feb.

What times are your AC?

lauradan

Woops those were for last year... anyone going for this year? MY situational judgement questionnaire was fairly easy!

I have an assessment centre in 2 weeks, only founf out this morning, if anyone can offer any advice on what to expect i would be very greatful?

the programme i am going for is Engineer Training Programme, the info i have read above mentions presentations and individual exercises, can anyone shed any light?

Many thanks.

lauradan

Hi Mike,

I had my assessment centre for the summer internship last week and its not too bad. Group exercise with a task and presentation, a presentation activity where you get some time to prepare and then time to present and then an individual interview.

Gen up on info of the business, but its really not too bad :) Enjoy yourself!

mike080602

Many thanks for the reply, much appreciated and good luck!

alphabravo

Hey Mike,

Have you had your assessment centre yet?

What did you do?

What did they ask?

How do you think it went.

I'm not applying for the same scheme as you but would still be interested in your views and experience.

Hope it went well for you.

mike080602

Yes I had it this week, some areas went okay, some could have gone better, should find out next week. In terms of what we did it was the same as is mentioned in the FAQ section on the website.

lauradan

These are assessment centres for the Grad scheme right?

I somehow managed to get a summer internship! They rang me exactly two weeks after the assessment centre to put me in touch with my line manager for the summer so that I can arrange a pre summer visit to the site and work out which project I should work on.

So expect to wait the full two weeks I guess! Good luck!

alphabravo

Mike did you apply for the construction engineer training programme or the other one?

I've not even had my telephone call yet.

What area are you in?

They're still doing assessment centres up until July for some.

Laura congratulations, hope it goes okay for you, and you get a permanent position.

mike080602

Yes it was the Engineer Training Programme.

The job wouldn't start until September so they will have AC's until then I guess. I am in Staffordshire area, telephone interview is ok, more of an information finding exercise, explaining what is involved and that you understand the details of it.

alphabravo

So on the telephone they just asked you things like what do you know about the company, about the programme, etc.
When did you submit your original application?
I submitted mine late in February.

mike080602

Yes pretty much, i think the AC dates are dependent on what location you are going for, nothing sinister if you are having to wait a while, the programme doesn't start until September.

oluwa4u

hey Mike, tnx for the tips. could anyone in here tell me what the competency test is about, is it verbal and numeracy only and what are the likely questions at the interview,,,plz, try and shed more light...also, what is the group exercise like...One luv

joebennell

hi guys, i recieved my confermation email today so ill be heading out to the assessment centre on the 18th of april, has any one else go to this stage or going on the 18th, be interested to meet some faces while im there makes everything a little easyer when youve got someone to talk too

joebennell

hi, ive sent you an email, be interested to hear from others, i recieved another email with all the info about taxi fairs and items i should bring

luv2poker1

Hi all, this is my first post.
I applied for the Construction engineer program based in East Midlands on 6/3/11 but havent yet heard anything back. My question is, has anyone else applied for this same position and are now attending the assesment. I'd just like to know if perhaps i'm unsuccessful this time i can put my mind to rest and hopefully something else might turn up. thanks in advance for any replies.

joebennell

give it another week or two, with the amount of applications i think theyll have a large amount to processe, if not you can ring them and theyll let you know,

alphabravo

Hey Guys,

Luv2poker1 I don't know if you saw the the timetable for assessment centres on the website about a week ago, but they've just removed a load of dates that were on there.

I don't know if that means they are not going to do any more assessment centres for the Construction Engineer Training Programme or not. Maybe they are changing the dates?

It does say that you are not guaranteed an assessment centre.

Have you completed the Situational Judgement Test or had the telephone discussion yet?

They tend to answer any questions you have on the phone, but don't know exactly what's happening with your application apart from telling you to wait.

luv2poker1

thanks for reply Alpha Bravo, at the moment i have only filled out the situational awareness test also noticed the removal of east midlands course, which just leaves me thinking i missed out this time, bit dissapointed if it doesnt materialise, guess i'll try again next time.

sharkdawg

Has anyone here been at an assessment centre for the graduate development programme? I had a telephone interview back in december but have heard nothing since. I rang them yesterday to find out the status of my application and they said that it was still under consideration but that a lot of the places had already been filled!

luv2poker1

Phoned today to chase my application which i completed on 6/3/2011 for construction engineer program for M1 corridor, still not completed telephone interview yet but was told they will let people know if they are unsuccessful. So no news might be good news in this case. Just have to wait a little longer, fingers crossed.

alphabravo

Yeah I rang them a while back as well and got the same answer.

I've just received an email saying that they have now offered the positions out to people and that no more assessment centres will be carried out.

Oh well, not to worry. I would have preferred to start next September anyway.

Next year we must remember to apply earlier.

lauradan

Hard luck to those who didn't get on the scheme - sounds like they had a lot of people.

Thanks alphabravo - I hope so too!
Good luck to everyone with the student/apprentice/graduate job applications!

luv2poker1

Also received the dreaded email today, i have now asked for feedback, so they said someone will call me so i can be better prepared next time. When does the application process normally start? Good luck to those who made it, let us know how you get on.

hi all, was due for the Engineers training programme on the 18th but couldn't make it cz i had flu, don't know yet if they would consider me for another assessment slot. Would appreciate if anyone that has done his/hers could give me a feel of what to expect to narrow down my preparation. Is the aptitude test only numerical and verbal or there is more to it, wot about the group exercise, presentation and interview. You would be helping me a great deal by hinting me with area of concentration rather than preparing wide . email is abeesmart@yahoo.com.... cheers pals

luv2poker1

just found out feedback will not be given unless you fail the assesment centres, so a bit in the dark. Could anyone tell me if it would be useful to enrol on an engineering course i have GCSE's only, i think if anything its this that let me down as i have good work experience, leading teams e.t.c. Any advice for adult learning courses i could try to strengthen my application, should i apply again. Thanks in advance

EEEjoe

I applied for the 'national grid engineering training program' (electricity construction) back in in October 2010 and had my telephone interview in October 2010, they emailed saying they could take up to 6 weeks to manage applications. Its now been 6 months I ring every so often and all they say is my application is still being considered. Worries me that some of you have been offered/had assesment centres already, wonder if it means Im just a reserve? Unlucky to you guys who have been unsuccessful though, keep trying!

oluwa4u

hi...could anyone in here kindly give a clue of what to expect in the engineer training programme assessment centre. tnx

luv2poker1

hi all, if you saw my last post, i was turned down for East Midlands area construction Engineer programme, so applied again for a different area , low and behold i was now offered a telephone interview so keep trying. Although i have only been offered one day for interview which isnt really any good.

Marcus Cara
