EDF telephone interview

I've applied to the EDF nuclear engineering scheme and have a telephone interview in the next couple of days. If anybody has any pointers I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks

jobjobjob

So i had it this morning- went pretty well I think, but obviously can never be certain about the outcome. I won't list the questions I had now in case a competitor gets a place at the assessment centre rather than me, but I will give a brief outline:

Started with around 3 short typical interview questions that I wasn't really expecting as I thought it would be 100% competency based.
Then 3 competency questions.

I will post back the actual questions once I know whether I was successful or not...

JLKhan

I had mine yesterday. Wasn't the most convenient date for an appointment as i had only finished my end of term exams the day before and was feeling a bit ropey for an interview.

Dont think I did myself justice but had answers for all the questions. After the typical do you have any disabilities, have you prepared for this interview etc. I only had five questions. And the interview lasted just short of 20mins.

She started talking about the arrangements for the assessment centre at the end which got me excited. Then said she would let me know after christmas if i have been successful. Was this the same for you djamck?

Also, if i now look at my account area it doesn't say "pending decision" or anything along those lines it is just blank. Is your's the same and when are you expecting a reply?

Another tactic I adopted was not using examples already used on my application form. Do you think that's what was expected?

> She started talking about the arrangements for the assessment centre at the end which got me excited. Then said she would let me know after > christmas if i have been successful. Was this the same for you djamck?

Yes, but I think it is standard for them to say this. I had a mediocre interview with npower for which I wasn't successful and the guy was still positive and mentioned the arrangements.

It's a competency interview, so everybody will be scored (yes a number I think) and they will make their decision once they have all the scores. Even if you do well, it may not be enough! :(

> Also, if i now look at my account area it doesn't say "pending decision" or anything along those lines it is just blank. Is your's the same and > when are you expecting a reply?

I haven't looked. I know the deadline is the 31st so I would expect to hear pretty soon after that if not before. We will definitely get an email to let us know, and at the moment as far as I am concerned no news is good news! :)

> Another tactic I adopted was not using examples already used on my application form. Do you think that's what was expected?

I hope not because I did talk about some of the things I had mentioned on my application.

Good luck and hopefully I might see you at an assessment centre.

I did my numerical test few days back but havent heard anything. The application just says - thank you for completing the numerical test...
Any idea if I have passed the test?

JLKhan

It took a week for them to come back to me following my completion of the numerical reasoning test. Bearing in mind the time of year though I wouldn't be suprised if it took two weeks or longer. I had my telephone interview on the 17th and I'm still waiting on their decision.

hi

I have a telephone interview coming up with EDF Energy and I will massively appreciate if someone on this thread can share his/her experience. I notice the company has not explicitly mentioned on its website the competencies they'd be assessing the candidates on.

ta!!

ringthechanges

Hi JLancashire,

I notice you've already had a telephone interview with EDF. It would be a great help if you can tell me about the competencies EDF is specifically looking for? I've spent plenty amount of time on their website looking for this piece of information and there is no clear mention on the competencies. What sort of behavioral questions were you asked in the interview?

Wish you luck on the outcome.

thanks!!

iqkhanuk

Hi all

can some one guide me regarding the Online numerical reasoning test
can you post some examples

thanks

God bless you

fakolade

Can someone guide me through the online numerical test, I have four days

iqkhanuk36

Last night my friend told me it is PSL based test

can any one confirm it

uybert

It is an SHL numerical reasonin test.

G-host

Hi,

It is SHL test and quite easy, easier than SHL tests for investment banks. You have 18 questions to answer in 25 minutes.

Hi JLancashire/ djamck,

Would u be kind to share the competency questions asked? I ve my interview on thursday and applied for the finance scheme, so am not ur rival as we didnt apply for the same scheme.

Thanks

JLKhan

I'd be reluctant to tell you the exact questions I was asked because I'm sure they change from candidate to candidate depending on the course of the interview. I don't know the specific competencies they are looking for but my advice would be to think carefully about your weaknesses in the past and how you would change in the future. This is where I tripped up. It's easy enough to rattle off past examples of teamwork and success but make sure you're prepared to be critical about your own performance if they ask.

Good luck.

I'd be very suprised if i find out I've progressed to the next stage!

But touch wood and perhaps see you at the assessment centre.

Fingers crossed

JLKhan

And wrt to the numerical reasoning test...

This is my take on it (opinions may differ!)

Below is a response I gave to somebody who sent me a private message about it yesterday

Well I'm a civil engineer and I've previously sat these tests with Network Rail and Lloyds for internships. I actually thought the Network Rail one would be easier than the Lloyds one but I was wrong and only passed the Network Rail one last year. I think the key is to make sure you interpret the data correctly. With Lloyds it was all financial data which I had no experience in handling. The EDF one is fairly straight forward. Simple calculations involving energy consumption and manipulating percentages and other graphical data. It doesn't involve much more than mulitplication (perhaps followed by subtraction and addition to compare figures) , or perhaps calculating %growth after 5years say.

Make sure you get 100% on the practice questions before you start and bear in mind it will be harder under the pressure of time. You are given a timer so as long as you pace the questions you shouldn't go wrong. Just rember to read the data correct 1st time! Each set of data has around 4questions allocated to it. So don't confuse what information you are being given and foul all the questions up for that section!

I don't know how I scored but felt pretty confident I got above 80%. And as far as I remember there were not any obvious tricks! If you get the an answer which fits one of the provided multiple choice solutions it was generally correct.

G-host

ok JLancashire

fakolade

Thanks, for the numerical test help

jobjobjob

Like JLancashire I'm reluctant to mention the specifics of my interview (not that I can remember that much now). I was only asked 3 copmetency questions and I expect they were chosen from a list of a few more so it's probably best to have as much prepared as possible.

Regarding the numerical test, I found it much easier than others I have taken. It is SHL. Funnily enough I made a hash of the practice test, but found the actual one straightforward. I even had plenty of time left, which is not the case for the kenexa ones I have taken.

Good luck.

G-host

You re welcome

G-host

Ok

G-host

Ok

uybert

@JLancashire and @djamck,

Have you guys passed your interviews?

Or has anybody passed his or her telephone interview recently?

G-host

Had mine yesterday, told to expect a feedback in about 2 weeks since AC is as from 29 Feb.

Questions: *Why EDF? How did you convince members in a team to take ur suggestions (paraphrased)? Would you do the same in a similar situation? How challenging was the situation you faced (paraphrased), what would you do differently in a similar situation? What are you currently involved in? What are lessons/ skills have gained from it?*

Hope the above serves as a guide for those preparing for the telephone interview. Note please, it is not exhaustive and it could be unique to each scheme and/or candidate.

Success in your applications

uybert

@G-host,

Thanks for sharing, I had mine two days ago. Unlike others, it is great to see that you and I are still willing to share our experience. It is fantastic that the great majority have done, still do, and will do so in the future, that is what is great about this platform.

I don't see anyone a competitor here as I believe that the great majority of users on this forum are more than qualified and capable of getting a job. The only problem is the current market situation in which you have to be lucky, not jealous.

So here are the questions that I was asked:

1. Why EDF?
2. How have you planned a project?
3. How have you built a relationship with others?
4. How have you acquired a new skill?

Feel free to drop me a pm if you want to discuss it in a greater detail.

Good luck to everyone.

G-host

Thanks uybert,
This is so thoughtful of you. Will send u a PM in a bit.

Hope yours went well. Any feedback on it and AC?

Regards

lavajyami

Thanks all for very helpful posts.

I did my numerical 3 weeks back and still havent heard anything. Anyone else in same position?

jobjobjob

With due respect @uybert, of course we are competitors.

Maybe you and I are applying to different schemes, but others may well read the thread. If I had known my interview questions beforehand I would have performed better in the interview, why should I give someone else that opportunity before I know if I have been invited to attend the assessment centre?

uybert

@djamck,

I do respect your view, but if you see everyone else here as your competitors, I suggest you delete your wikijob account, this mindset clashes with the fundamental principle of this forum.

If you are not willing to share, why are you reading everyone else's comment to benefit?

jobjobjob

I think it is perfectly reasonable to share the interview questions one I know whether I have been invited to an assessment centre. Although this may no longer be useful for this year's applicants, I myself have found older threads useful and I am sure this thread will be viewed by next year's applicants.

Indeed, the benefit I have gained from everyone else's comments as a member of wikijobs has been from older threads and not once from posts about my current applications.

Surely you draw the line somewhere (and clearly at a different place to me), but you could have pressed print screen on each of the questions in the numerical test and posted those too?

Regards

G-host

I agree with uybert even as I respect djamck's position.

The world will be a better place if we think of the general good than personal interest. @djamck, u ll be surprised that what they consider in a potential employee goes beyond giving the right answers to the questions asked. Have u considered the possibility of u eventually rejecting their offer because u re offered a better position elsewhere? Winning in life is not only "me, me, me or when it happens to me alone". Winning is seeing you assist others to succeed even if u end up losing. The joy of helping others achieve success is sure a great recompense. Do we ve to lose our humanity because times are hard or because we re desperate to succeed at the expense of others?

@All, this forum is to assist one another to achieve success where others failed but not at the expense of others. If you agree with the principles of the great minds that set up this medium to exchange ideas, pls feel free to share urs, it will greatly enhance our advancement but if u feel otherwise, no hard feelings, but do remember we've come this far without ur help and will definitely go farther.

Success to everyone, see you in the boardroom!

hiko86

Hey there lavajyami, I finished my online assessment around a week ago and didn't receive any emails regarding my application...BUT...when i checked my account in the company website today, it said that I am successful into going on to the tele interview and I have to book a time slot asap and I only have like 2 days to prepare!!! darnzzz.......well I would advice that you check your account in case they did not inform you that you have got through!

oceane

Got my interview in the next few days....will let you know how it goes!

ngarus

Who here is applying for the energy analyst position? If so have you heard from them regarding the telephone interview? I did my numerical at the beginning of December but I haven't heard from them in regards to the next stage:-S I emailed them, but their reply was that they are reviewing the numerical test and they will send a further reply soon.

lavajyami

@ngarus
I am in a similar situation. I sent an email, they sent acknowledgement email back but nothing else so far. I applied in engineering though. There doesn't seem to be any graduate phone line either...

lavajyami

Hiko86

Thanks for the tip, just checked my account, no news :(

hiko86

Well I had my tele interview the other day. Got asked some standard questions like Why EDF? Do you know what you have to do during the programme? A time when you planned a group project? when you faced a problem in a project? Very short interview, bout 15 mins...the lady was very pleasant and i enjoyed the interview...not sure i did good enough to get through to the technical interview tho...

G-host

Hi hiko86

Did u ask her when u should expect to read from her with regards to the outcome of the telephone interview? Which scheme did u apply for?

Regards

oceane

I had the same questions as hiko - was told I'd here the outcome within 2 weeks, so start of Feb I guess.

G-host

Thanks Oceane,

Wishing u the best.

Sploke

I was asked similar questions, why EDF?, How have you improved on your skills ?, a time you planned a project and how did you planned it, how do you relate with team members, how have you brought a change to the normal way of doing things ?, will you do same in the future? and some other follow up questions. The intervier said I do hear the outcome of the interview in 2 weeks. We should all hope for the best even when we think we did below what we would have done. All the best

Cheers

olewithmilk

Hi guys,

I only learned about the EDF scheme quite late and I applied for the post on the deadline (31st December) if I haven't heard anything about doing a numerical test or anything to get any further by now should I just assume I haven't been successful?

How long was there for you guys between handing in the application and doing the numerical tests?

G-host

mine was about 9 days

iqkhanuk36

Hi all I had mine
I would like to share to all of my friends here

1 Why EDF
2 What you like for the program
3 give us some example from your recent project
4 What is your planning

I must say the EDF team is much much much better then ATKINS and network rail :( .

G-host

Hello everyone,

Has anyone gotten a feedback on their telephone interview?

Favour001

Not yet, still waiting

G-host

@Favour001
Thanks. Which scheme did u apply to, how did ur interview go?

Favour001

Energy analyst role. I thought the interview went ok, but with these things you never know.

What role did you apply to? and have you heard bk from them?

G-host

I applied for the finance scheme. No feedback yet though they said after 2 weeks and this almost 3 weeks after my interview.

Taio

@ Favour001, When did u do your numerical tests? And how long after did they get back to ya? I did mine about 2 weeks ago but haven't heard anything from them...

Harmony

I sat my tests right after Christmas and haven't heard back from them. I have e-mailed them to find out and the response is that they are still in the process of evaluating my test results...

I think they are doing interviews with some candidates first and if these people are then unsuccessful at the assessment centre, they will invite more people for an interview.
