Just wondering if anyone else has had telephone interviews / assessment centres for CSC. I have an AC scheduled for January and really want to know what to expect... Cheers in advance guys.

torness5

Can anyone help with this??

rawlinsa

I haven't, but I've just been invited to do their online numeracy test. What line of service are you applying to, and what is your experience of the application process so far?

Sorry I can't be of more use to you.

torness5

Anyone heard back from CSC about jobs?

marmoset_32

I've been invited to an assessment centre in mid-February. Does anyone have any pointers for the day specific to CSC? Thanks

RobW101

Hi, i've got my telephone interview with csc next wednesday (11/02), anybody got any tips? Questions asked apart from the competency ones?

pepsicat59

Hi, I actually had my telephone interview this morning. They asked about 8 competency based questions but before that they asked the standard ones - What do you know about CSC, why do you want to work at CSC, why do you want that particular role....they also asked whether I knew where their head office is...luckily I did. Good luck!

RobW101

Cheers, thats a great help!

Marvel21

RobW101

Has anybody heard when their assessment centre is going to be? I know theres one this friday and next friday but haven't been booked into one yet...

Saif

pepsicat59

I passed my telephone interview a couple of weeks ago and was told I was through to the the assessment day. However they emailed me this morning to say all positions have been filled :( They have said I can be booked in for the autumn assessment days for the 2010 grad scheme but that is too late

Marvel21

can anyone tell me about the assessment day?

Saif

Hey, sorry to hear that; what grad schemes have u applied? which country do u live? are u flexible to be relocated? if yes do they know?

by the way what types of questions did they ask you during your telephone interview? i have got mine this friday

waiting for your reply

regards

pepsicat59

Hey, I applied for the UK Business Project Management Scheme and yes I said I was able to relocate anywhere in the UK...guess I was a little late in applying or something??

They asked why I wanted to work for them and that scheme etc. The 7/8 competency questions were the standard ones - describe a time when you have had to deal with a difficult customer - what did you do, what was the outcome...that kind of thing...basically questions where you had to demonstrate working under pressure, in teams, on a complex project etc

Good luck!

Saif

Hey, thanks for the information,

Good luck with your job hunts

Saif

Hey, How was your assesment day with CSC? hope u have got the job

RobW101

Pepsicat59, did they say that they were stopping all graduate recruitment or just the intak for your area of the business?
I've applied for a finance position there and got an e-mail yesterday saying they were waiting for a decision from the business as to the dates of the next assessment centres...

pepsicat59

Hey, they didn't say, they just said "Unfortunately, we have now filled all of our roles for this year's programme"...I am guessing that means the Business programme that I applied for...and the email you have received sounds promising

Saif

Hey guys,

Has anyone been to the CSC assessment centre? What is it like? I have never been to an assessment centre before and have got one comming during March.

Please help if you can,

RobW101

havent had the assesment center yet, had the telephone interview about 3 weeks ago they said theyd be in touch with the date for ac.

have any tips on the ac, were the group excerises big? when you had your final interview was it comptency based or just an interview?

good luck hope you get through

nickd_101

I had the assessment centre last Friday, unfortunately I didn't get the job, which was pretty disappointing considering that one of the assessors there pretty much said that I should be offered a job!

Anyway, there were about 13 people there for the AC and the groups were divided up according to the schedule for the day. Basically, for my group exercise there were four of us. We were given a case study which revolved around allocating funds to a charity, though I'm sure this will probably be different for you. The task is to discuss the different candidates (possibly charities) for sponsorship, make a decision and then to prepare and deliver a presentation in the group (make sure you don't forget this as we didn't allocate enough time to the presentation preparation phase which essentially affected the quality of what we delivered). During the course of the discussion we were given extra "details" which I think were intended to throw us off course. The details came at the exact point we'd made our decision, so again make sure there is enough time to re-evaluate the choice you've made (in our exercise our chosen charity's director had disappeared with all the donations that had been made previously!)

The interview involves the prepared presentation along with questions, then a competency based interview. Also make sure you know plenty about CSC as a company and some of the projects that they have done in the past. The presentation was on "Something CSC had done that impressed you and how you would use it to grow the business". My interviewer happened to be an expert on the field I had chosen, though I'm not sure this will always be the case but just be aware that you should try to know a bit of background about the project/initiative you're presenting just in case you get a grilling on the subject matter!

In all fairness, the day is actually pretty enjoyable which made it all the more disappointing when I got my rejection. I have a feedback session booked for Monday, so hopefully I can find out where I went wrong and learn from it going forward. If you need any other help/info just let me know.

Saif

Hi, sorry to hear that CSC has not offer you the role but dont worry its not the end of the world, I am sure u deserve a better job.

Thanks for the information regarding your AC, it is very helpful. However, I would love to take your further advice on how best to perform during my final AC. I would really appreciate this a lot

Which graduate scheme have you applied for? I am waiting for my AC for Technical scheme.

Good luck with your job hunting

Regards

nickd_101

Hi Saif,

I applied to the Systems Integration Consulting scheme. Can't really offer any advice on how to perform on the assessment day until I get my feedback, then I can know exactly where I went wrong.

The area that I felt least comfortable with I would say is the interview and presentation part of the day. Make sure you have a good knowledge of the topic that you're presenting just in case you get an assessor that has an in-depth knowledge of the area. Also make sure you know quite a bit about CSC as a company, some of their clients and competitors and perhaps most importantly why you want to work for CSC and why in your chosen area.
Another point is to make sure you read over the CV that you sent to them and ensure that you can 'back up' everything that is on there, for instance, I have my Spanish A-Level on my CV and my assessor asked me how I was in Spanish!
Also try to use a broad range of examples for your responses to the questions, most of mine were from my current work and the main deviations from that had been answers to questions on the application itself, so if you do have any kind of experience that can demonstrate competencies like teamwork or customer service it would be good to brush up on them.

As far as the other two main areas are concerned I'll have to wait for my feedback before I can offer any real useful advice on them just to be sure what I say is correct. At the moment I think the main let down for me was the individual interview, and given the feedback I received from the assessor on the day for the case study presentation I would say that this was the best. Once I see where I went wrong though, I'll be able to advise you on what to expect.

All the best,

Nick

Marvel21

Hi nickd_101,

nickd_101

Marvel21

nickd_101

Marvel21

Saif

Hi Nick,

Thank you very much for the information, its really helpful.
I am worried about the case study and presentation because I have to prepare it on the day but its good to hear that you did well on that. What was the case study about? Was it technical? What was the topic for your prepared presentation?

When are you expecting the feedback from them?

regards

Saif

nickd_101

Hi Saif,

Glad to have been a help. The case study on the day is probably one of the more enjoyable parts to be honest. It wasn't at all technical, it more so tests your reasoning and some basic business knowledge (i.e. awareness of market share etc.) along with some very minor number crunching (working out the potential profits of a particular choice of product for sale).
The overall jist of the case study was that there were a selection of products with various characteristics and we had to choose one of the products and where to sell it based on some information in the case study. The case study was about 6 pages long and you are given an hour in which to read through it and gather your ideas and prepare a presentation on flip chart paper.
I prepared a presentation on the NHS project that CSC are involved.
Feedback isn't due until Monday at 5.30pm unfortunately, that was the earliest session they had available. Hopefully, I'll get some info I can use in time for my next assessment day (if I can get one that is!)

Try not to worry too much about being pre-prepared for these sorts of parts, I think it's best to try and just react on the day, otherwise you might be overly concerned with trying to "fit in" something that you've learnt in advance that may be impressive, but not too relevant.

Let me know if you need any more info,

Nick

Marvel21

Hi Nick
Could you please give me the telephone number. I havent heard from them yet.
Thanks
waiting for your reply,

nickd_101

I PM'd it to you yesterday evening. Let me know if you haven't received and I'll PM again.

Saif

Hi Nick,

Thanks once again, I must say that you are a very helpful and friendly person. I think thats the quality of being an affective team player.

Nick, Where are you based? I mean how far from the CSC's headquarter? I live in Bradford, very far away from the headquarter, I think I have to travel the day before and stay overnight at a hotel. Does CSC provide accommodation?

Do they make the decision on the same day of AC?

Regards

Saif

nickd_101

Hi Saif,

I'm based in Birmingham, so I travelled down the night before and stayed at the Premier Inn in Aldershot, which is literally a 5 minute walk from CSC's office. No accommodation is provided by CSC, but they reimburse you for travel/accommodation costs up to £100, more if pre-arranged (they'll give details in the invite to assessment centre message).

I'm not too sure exactly when they make the decision, but they say they'll let you know of the outcome within 48 working hours.
