AON Consultancy Interview/AC?
Posted 24 January 2009 - 1:12pm by thegreatdebate
hey has anybody had an ac with them or know much about their programme etc?
I have one coming up.
thanks
Ok well briefly to advise anyone who has a first round interview coming up:
The interview is intense and consists of 9 competency q's along with why aon, why your area and strengths and strengths which make you suitable.
The competencies are split up into 3 sections and each section contains a choice of 6/7 q's which the interviewer will randomly pick out on the day. Despite needing so many examples its quite relaxed and you get asked non traditional competencies which you can discuss on the spot e.g. "time uv made a contact, utilised them fully and how did they influence you in your life", this kind of thing will be testing relationship bulding and i comfortably made it up on the day!
Other competencies are standard team working, managing large quantities of data, leadership, challenges/bad decsions, BUT they are very specific and always ask follow ups like how could you have done it differently/what did u learn etc.
There were no industry specific q's and nothing abt economy/business news, tho no doubt this may be asked about in the next interview. Also AON is a diverse firm re what it does which can be difficult to get your head around when your thinking who their competitors may be, but look at each division e.g. insurance, risk management, consultancy, acturial and compare competitors that way.
Hello,
Has any body had an interview at Aon recently. For Benefits Consultancy? Has anything changed from the info above? I have an interview coming up, Its my first interview so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Immensely nervous.
hey mine was also for benefits consultancy, got through to AC but then didnt get it even though i felt the ac couldnt have gone better!! Apparently they are only taking 8 ppl and they said there hadnt been tht much interest so i guess they r running more ac's in the hope of finding a certain type of person and 3 pppl who i kept in touch with at the ac didnt get in either and they were all pretty smart/oxbridge types.
As mentioned above the interview is quite structured which can be good/bad but just have alot of different examples ready. Personally i wouldnt have bothered going to the effort if i knew they were so picky.
Can you tell me what happened at the assessment centre? What tasks? What type of interview? I got through to the ac, but after reading what you said I dont think im gona get my hopes up. If everything went as well as you say it did, I dont see what they could have based a rejection on. Did they tell you where you went wrong?
Thanks for your help :)
Aon Benefits solutions are really wierd. They told us (in early feb) that we were the only AC for benefits solutions. They also said they had eight people last year and were looking to expand. Which was wierd as there were only seven of us.
They told me my interview and presentation went well and all my feedback came back as REALLY low with no negative feedback. They then also said i didn't have enough customer experience so i'm wondering how i got through to the AC at all.
tbh i didnt even bother requesting feedback as i knew i did what i could and what one company wants another doesnt! Did u go to the early feb ac, cos the one i went to they told me they were still holding other ac's later on.
ANyway the day starts with an assessed ice breaker, ur in the main group of about 10 people and given a scenario of being stuck on an island and a list of items, u must as a group prioritize which goes where, thankfully in our group there were no loud mouths (and this does u no favours as their looking for team players not leaders) so i got across some good points but with 10 ppl its hard.
Next there was a competency interview, completely structured based on general competencies and i didnt get any questions abt myself or anything, wasnt impressed!
Next you have the presentation, u have 45min to prepare and your given a 4/5page case study and you have to make recommendations abt how to improve the service aon gives to a particular customer and how its employees can be more aligned, allowing you to use your initiative, my assesser was really impressed at the end and gave good feedback..
then finally a small group excercise with 4 ppl, each person has a unique proposal about where to build a new shopping mall (i think) and you have to argue your point based on profit/cost/benefits your given in your brief, BUT its not about who gets their idea chosen at the end, but involving everyone is discussions, allowing ppl to speak and persuading, again DONT try to lead!
All in all i didnt need any prior knowledge abt the firm/industry, there were no techinical questions so its testing the individuals skills/personality.
right anyone applying to Aon Insurance and Risk Management programme, been waiting for about a month....
how long does this whole process take?
been waiting for 2 months to get a reply from them, called them and left them a message, but still nothing.
The deadline for that only recently passed; so it may take a while.
On the other hand, I applied to their pensions consulting program and never received a receipt email (this was in early november). Like you they haven't bothered contacting me either. Seems to be a bit of a cowboy company.
Hi Guys... I got a call saying I was invited to the first stage interview in Farnbourgh next Wed...anyone else heard back?
Hey had my interview...it was okay! I wouldnt say it went great, he did hint that I had a bit more technical knowledge that wasnt required and they were just looking for really good people who can work with clients! I dont know thought...it was all competency based...mostly standard relationship building, teamwork, and meeting deadlines. Fingers crossed!!
Hey, I had my first stage interview on the 19th in london.. just wondering how long they take to get back to candidates?
Like Re_Wind18 I also had an interview on February 25th at Aon’s Harrow office. Therefore I will give the experience that I had.
• The first round interview was pretty simple and was mainly competency. There are two interviewers and they ask the basic questions, such as why you went to your uni and why did you decided to do your course. There were only a few technical questions such as what is diversification.
• After a few weeks of waiting I finally got a phone call to say that I have been invited to an assessment centre in their Harrow office. Eight people were at the ac and in my opinion all could have been offered the job.
• First all eight of us, were given a sheet that said that we were lost in a forest and had 12 items. After ten minutes of reading the sheet alone, all eight of us had to decide whether or not we should stay or go and prioritise the twelve items.
• Next the eight were split into four, I first had to complete a presentation where I was given a case study based on a problem that Aon had, and we were given 45 minutes to prepare the presentation or a flip chart. The presentation could be no longer than 10 minutes and then the interview asked me questions for ten minutes.
• I then had an interview which was slightly different. The interviewer did not have my CV or application, and just asked me to tell him what I was about. Then there was competency based questions which were similar to the first round interview. I felt that they just wanted to get to know me.
• Then we had a lunch with some of the graduates, but no of the assessors were there, thus I felt we could relax for half an hour which was really good.
• The afternoon session was relatively short as the originally groups then went off together and had to do a case study. Each person had a different site for a new restaurant, but we did not no the other sites that everybody else had. First we had 45 minutes to write a one page (has to be one page) proposal on why the firm should choose our site. Then we had 40 minutes to argue each site and come up with a conclusion of what site is the best.
• Finally we all said goodbye and went home.
I got a call today from Aon after my Insurance, Reinsurance and Risk Management face to face interview and was given three dates to chose from for an A/C. I haven't had the confirmation email yet as promised, but presume it's at Devonshire square like my interview.
has anyone else got / had an A/C? is it likely to differ from Maths is Kool's post.
Im bricking it about the presentation bit. Maths is Kool, did you feel you had ample time to prepare? at willis i fluffed it...
Some helpful posts here guys thanks, got an interview soon with the risk management team.
Just a quick question to 'Maths is kool', with regards to the basic technical questions is there anything that you would recommend reading or is it just a case of using some logic/common sense?
Good luck Haggs with the A/C
Citrus, best of luck with the interview. how come yours is with the risk management team, is it for a grad scheme?
mine was for the insurance, reinsurance an risk management scheme. My first round competency interview was not technical at all, if that helps, the only opportunity i got to show any technical knowledge was when they asked me what i knew about Aon and why i wanted to go into broking.
I had 45 minutes to complete the presentation and this was long enough, I would not worry because mine only lasted about five minutes when it was suppose to last ten and they said that my presentation was fine. All they want to see is that you can present well and have good ideas
Hey maths is kool
Just wanted to ask whether you had any more information about the case study and presentation you did at the AC. What was the scenario and what kind of problems were you asked to address?
any help would be great, got an AC soon.
Thanks.
hi Maths is kool ,
thanx so much for the advise, I have an aon assessment center coming up soon.
Can you please give a detailed info on the presentation.
Like was it a group or a solo presentation? what kind of topic should I look forward to.
And something more about the group exercise at the end.
If you could do it ASAP, I will be grateful.
Thanks
They've had Assessment Centres?! Which role did you apply for / office and have you attended said A/C?
I'm still waiting to hear back off my pensions consulting application.
any idea how long does it take for them to reply after the A/C?
Hey,
How much time it took Aon to reply you after the A/C.
I just went through one and immensely impatient to know the results.
Will appreciate your reply.
Thank you
No went through one recently, still waiting for the result.
Do reply to this thread if you get a reply.
Thank you.
If there like most companies; then usually upto 3-5 days to call you about your result after the A/C.
Congrats Rach1, what position did you apply for and which office?
EDIT: Also, what did you have to do at the A/C? How many other candidates were there?
Hey guys, has anyone heard anything from the insurance, reinsurance and risk management team since the assessment centres?
Hi all,
I have applied for the summer internship and i have the interview/ presentation in 2 days. Has any1 else had to give a presentation on the pension protection fund?? I am very worried as it has to last 10 mins and i dont really know much about it!!
Limes29, i had one for the insurance and risk management scheme last friday. i havent heard anything back yet? has anyone?
i got a phone call about the insurance, reinsurance and risk management scheme yesterday and am pleased to say i got on. good luck everyone else!
Congratulations haggs! Unfortunately for me, I havent been phoned yet and so I am concluding that I have been rejected (once again!!!) Anyone else heard?
Thanks Rach1 and Humphrey! i would quite like to try insurance and reinsurance so either Devonshire Square or Bishopsgate. They might not have made their mind up on the last few places Humphrey. Rach1 where are you?
Congrats!
Well I guess I've been rejected; since they haven't even bothered to reply to my initial application and they've already run interviews / ACs.
Hi i got an offer today for pensions consulting at the devonshire square office, i declined it though. Their recruitment process is quite delayed but moves very fast i found from the point when they actually make contact. Does anyone know compared to other firms if Aon is popular, no1 i speak to seems to have even heard of them!
Yes with E&Y as a general insurence actuary, i really dont know wich company is a better place for a grad, i got the impression from the Aon office that there were no younger employees!
If you wanted general insurance, AON would have been better. It is one of the biggest insurance and re-insurance brokerages in the UK. If I were in ur shoes, I would rather wrk for a traditional firm like Mercer or Towers Watson or better still Aon than a consulting firm like Ernst &Young and PwC. The latter are not traditional actuarial firms at all.
However, the internship will decide whether they are a good actuarial firm or not. Aon , mercer, hewitt, towers and a host of other actuarial firms can be found in the institute of actuaries directory for actuarial employers and they are all in the same league wrt to actuarial profession but not pwc and e&y. Also, did you read what each company offers b4 applying to get an overview of how their wrk matches ur interests?
Also, do you want to be a small drop in a mighty ocean or big thing in a small office?
You will have to wait till you finish ur internship b4 u find out.
Hi, I just got my call last week saying that I have got through to the assessment centre in January for investment consulting in London. Has anyone been to an assessment centre for this yet? This is my first assessment centre and I don't really know what to expect! Please someone help! Thank you.
i've done the online questions for a consulting position at Aon Hewitt and it's been nearly a month since then and I haven't heard anything yet. Surely they'd let me know if i failed it? anyone else experienced this?
i applyed for the summer internship actuarial with Hewitt. Since i completed numerical test and SJT, it's been nearly a month i haven't heard anything yet. If they reject me i should have received a reject letter, but it's just nothing. anyone else experienced this?
Hi Shu Wang and cuzzabear :) I have recently applied to Aon Hewitt's summer actuarial internship, and have the final stage on this coming Wednesday, which consists of a single interview at their office in Leeds - where I will hopefully be doing my internship. It would be worth emailing them or getting a number to contact, as I'm sure their final assessment days are almost over, if they aren't already. :/ good luck guys!! I have been rejected from PWC, Deloitte, Mercer and KPMG; as well as not hearing back from Allianz, First Actuarial, Aon, Barnett Waddingham... Point is, don't be disheartened!! Put in the effort and you will get something :)
Hi Callum, I received the rejection email today. Thanks for your reply, I will keep trying, i believe i will finally get something. Good luck with your final stage~~You can get it!*^_^*
Thank you Shu :) good luck to you too, perserverance will be your greatest ally in this arduous process!!
My friend has applied to a graduate position in November/December and has passed online tests etc but waiting for whether she's successful for the Assessment Centre.
Is anyone still waiting for Assessment Centre after the "pre screening questions" stage? How long does this usually take. Or has anyone got a phone number for grad recruitment? She's been waiting for over a month and sent emails but got no reply!
Thanks.

No idea - I've set up a wiki profile though here - AON - which hopefully people will add to, as hopefully they will on this thread!
