Technical consulting (or technology consultancy) refers primarily to information technology consulting. Typically a client will commission the services of a consulting firm to help plan and develop a new IT system, or examine the risks of an existing system.

Accenture, Deloitte, Capgemini and IBM are well known technical consulting firms. Each consulting firm has its own specific strengths and fields of expertise.

Technical consultants vary greatly in the salaries they earn, and is largely dependant upon experience and exactly what line of service you specialise in. Typical graduate starting salaries are in the region of £28,000-£30,000, with some firms offering as much as £35,000. Salaries tend to be lower if it includes a training contract which will allow you to become industry qualified.
