Reforms to Internships?

The new minimum wage regulations that have been put in place over the last few weeks have seen the government attempt to make a definite stance on the unpaid internships that have become so controversial.

The government has tried to establish who is entitled to the national minimum wage by making a checklist of criteria to establish what a ‘worker’ is. However, the vague criteria that refer to the nature of work carried out by an individual are all made invalid by the fact that the new laws state that an agreement must exist between employer and employee on the nature of their payment.

Following the news that the 20 per cent worst paid graduates are earning less than those who left school after A-levels, comes the headline in the Metro today that ‘1 in 4 graduates fails to get work.’ From a survey of over 49,000 students who left university in 2006 and 2007, 27.7 per cent were not in full time paid work at the time of the survey.

Writing CVs and covering letters can be one of the hardest things about applying for jobs. In fact I found that it was the main cause for my inertia once I had found positions to apply to. Something about having to sell myself and the reasons that I would be good to work for a company made me uncomfortable, striking the balance between not being too arrogant and not underselling yourself is the key, but it’s not easy.

The Road to an Internship

This is my first day and my first assignment at WikiJob: to write a blog post. Having been talked through the company's history and its ambitions, introduced to everyone in the office and then shown to my desk I am feeling very positive about the coming month where I will be working for the company.

But along the way I have not always felt as positive that I would even be in this situation.
